Carcass starts like Goregrind/Grindcore ok, for the example: GODS OF GRIND, the split album... they leave the gore/core in the heart work album making Melodic Death Metal... and for the black metal thing... black metal start whit a band called VENOM whit a album called BLACK METAL in the '82... and the voice of Bill are know as DEATH GROWL and is used in death and black... he don't start whit black metal vocal stile... the stile start whit "I Put a Spell on You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Carcass did something completely different at their time. Back then Metallica and Megadeth were very popular. In the underground scene were grindcore and deathmetal was fairly new at the time. Carcass proved that the corporate rock (ie metallica and Megadeth) sound style could be alot heavier accompany with a new vocal style (again at the time) which most black metal bands have cloned. Hence one of their song titles, "I told you so corporate rock really sucks". You kids need to get schooled!

As for genres, I'd say they played goregrind in the really beginning, then turning into death metal and eventually melo death, and Swansong is something like "groove-death" (some refer to it as "death-rock"). I like all phases, though. It's like Yyrkoon, they just cant do wrong.

If you want their early underground goregrind stuff (1980s) check out Splattered Cavities, Foeticide, Microwaved Uterogestation, Burnt to a Crisp, etc (Basically, albums like Reek of Putrefaction XD). If you want their more recent melo-death (Post 1990), try albums like Heartwork. =D
