Thomas "Tom" Paine (February 9, 1737 [O.S. January 29, 1736[1]] -- June 8, 1809) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He became notorious because of The Age of Reason (1793--94), his book that advocates deism, promotes reason and freethinking, argues against institutionalized religion and Christian doctrines.
I agree with you that the greatest value is truth. Thus, the greatest virtue is honesty.
However, I'm not sure how material determinism implies hedonism. Many scientists are, in fact, material determinists, and I wouldn't exactly call them hedonists. If you really value truth, you would certainly know that living in a world without a god doesn't mean that life has no purpose.
After all, which has historically been more honest and truthful - science or religion?
Science is not a person, and neither is religion. Its not an entity with a will. So your question is a bit faulty.
You have many evil and warped scientists and you have evil and warped priests. Coming from a scientific background, I know that many are genuinely nasty & egotistical creatures. That is human nature. You dont however have scientists ever giving up their life & ambitions for the service of others, so I would side that priests are more truthful - scientists are just scientists.

I am NOT making an anthropomorphic projection. Science and religion are ideas that are followed by PEOPLE and influence people's behavior.
The question is still valid. HISTORICALLY, which group of people have been more honest? There are good and bad people in both, especially if we are not talking about JUST honesty, but the scientific method KEEPS people honest, while religious dogma keeps people from being honest.

If something is 'true" shouldn't it reveal itself? Maybe when you stop looking you'll find it.
