  • What was considered to be her strongest event, and her least strongest event? She seems to be amazing at all the aparatus

  • she is beautiful.

  • She performed this the best of anyone at the games.

  • I miss compulsories! The basics are the best part of gymnastics. Sure, the high flying skills are awesome but if the basics aren't sound then they look sloppy. Where is this beautiful gymnastics nowadays? Nastia? Maybe. What about the WOGA girls and the All-Olympia girls, they show actual dance in their routines. Thank God Russia is almost back to its former glory.

  • I still enjoyed the routine, not her best competition, but she stayed in shape and in good form for performing in (her 2nd on her way to her 3rd) Olympics. The stress of training and competition, the dieting, that has to be hard on the body. She didn't have her usual amplitude but who cares? It would have been less exciting if she weren't there.

  • She still scored the highest in the whole compulsory competition with a 9.975!

  • um for her mistake at the end tht would be a .5 deduction she did the wrong skill at the end! she did a LAID OUT ARABIAN, and stumbeled on the full turn!

  • Does anyone know where i can find the commentary on svetlana right before this performance?

  • Good performance! Not the best though; she didn't pike deep enough (or if at all) but overall it was decent :)

  • Wonderful dancer! I saw lil glitches in the end but she was magnificent! IMO Onodi boguinskaya zmeskal miller and gogean and lysenko! Gogean was truly underscored if you can believe that! Check it out! She actually expressed the dance on the compulsory excersise here! ONODI WAS FLAWLESS and Kim and Shannon were very impressive!

  • Here are my two cents worth! Bogi's piked arabian does not display a deep enough pike, and she stumbles to the side on her final full pirouette. Other than that, her artistic interpretation is phenomenal. Zmeskal's routine was more precise, yet her body type doesn't lend itself to this kind of dance style. I watched them side to side, and liked Zmeskal's interpretation, but the judges were hypnotized by Bogi's lines and reputation, in my opinion.

  • She didn't stumble to the side at the end, she put her leg into the finishign position. What you said about her pike is somewhat true and that is perhaps what kept her from a 10.0. Bogi's interp. was perfect. She oversplit her leg kicks and back extension roll (perfect element!). She worked on her toes, her toepoint form was magnificent. Her reputation didn't help her, she deserved that 9.975 for showing mastery of gymnastics in that excercise. She was a top scorer in Soeul comp fx also.

  • She scored 9.900 in Seoul (also because she was put up 3rd or something; had she competed last instead of Shushunova, she would've probably scored a 10). Silivas was the top scorer in 1988 with a perfect 10.00.

  • the bitch didnt pike. theres no "somewhat true" about it. and yes, she stumbled on the turn. I found her boring here. Usually i love her floor. Thats why gymnastics is a SUBJECTIVE sport. we all have our own opinions and we are all right.

  • You need education on what constitutes piking. And she didn't stumble on the turn. No, not all opinions are right - "bitch" please...

  • you are SOOOOOOOO right. I was in gymnastics for 13 years...I DO need education on what constitutes piking. because the pike position isnt something you learn when you first begin gymnastics....I hope you caught the sarcasm in that..

  • @saulyboy09 LOL, I'm gonna have to agree with ya on this one. I usually love her floor routines too, but this was not one of her better performances. I thought the only part that she did really well on were her leaps and extension elements, she always has the most beautiful split positions. Other than that, not so good. :--)

  • @EdGringo78 thanks! lol I get it that people have their favorite gymnasts and we see past their mistakes and shortcomings (ie my love for Zmeskal even though her piked positions were HIDEOUS! lol). I LOVE Bogi, shes amazing and artistic but this FX was not all that great. That judges really should have deducted for that.

  • if Kim had the bodytype of Bogui would say otherwise, but Kim was so expressive than Bogui, just has another type of body that does not see her as elegant as Bogui. But she

did the best interpretation of the music in the competition.

  • No. There is no comparison between Kim Zemeskal and Boginskaya in this compulsory floor. While there were robberies and overscores in the compulsory floor (e.g. Bontas) there is not way that KZ should have outscored Svetlana on this routine. KZ was lacking in flexibility and her overall impression was not comparable to the Soviets. Chusovitina was a better Floor worker than Zmeskal with better form, flexibility, flow, toepoint and lines and didn't she didn't deserve this kind of score either

  • Watch the section from1:05 till 1:22 and compare to Zmeskal, you may be shocked at how Kim's movements especially in and out of passe were more technically accurate, precise, and had musicality.

  • Chusovitina cant dance, she is just a tumbler, everybody knows that, I like her gymnastics but she cant dance.

Zmeskal had better amplitude, and showed more flexibility , form, etc. here than Bogui. Better body type does'nt mean better dance nor interpretation

  • @GoBogi are you kiding me right cuz Chusovitina its a great tumbler but she cant dance, she's does not has sense of rhythm, so How, HOW I wonder, she can be better on floor than Zmeskal BIG LLLOOOOOLLLL

  • that was awesome, i love kim but i do believe this was a better overall routine because of bogi's style. kim definitely deserved to get the second highest score.

  • Wonderful Boginskaya, the last superstar gymnast. That times won't come back.

  • It always annoyed me to death to hear the announcers call her "The Belarussian Swan". It felt like everyone was focusing on her sad life story instead of her gymnastics. She was a lovely dancer, but she never did have the power that Kim Zmeskal had. Then again, the Americans were so thin and weak at the 1992 Olympics I'm surprised they could perform at all.

  • Well, Bogi could at one point tumble a double-double and a double-layout. I think here she was overtrained and tired. She came back with even more difficulty in 1995 which leads me to believe she'd have thrived better had the Soviets allowed her to adjust her training being a bit older and more seasoned.

  • 1. John Tesh is a dumbass.

    2. John Tesh is a horrid know-nothing commentator.

    3. John Tesh is an example of BAD HUMAN RESOURCES POLICIES AT NBC.

    4. American broadcasters around the time of the Cold War usually would emphasize the hard lives of non-americans competitors to soften the blow of seeing americans in the competition get soundly spanked. "They have a hard life in their poor oppressive country but at least they are getting a gold medal."

  • I love you! I couldn't have worded it better myself!

  • I am still trying to figure out how Zmeskal's routine was better? Besides the tumbling being some of the best in the games, there is a whole lot more to this routine than just tumbling. There is flexibility, extension, head and hand position, precision ...

  • Zmeskal's routine was not better. This was by far the best compulsory floor routine of the Olympics and got the highest score of any compulsory floor routine at these Olympics too.

  • Watch the section from 1:05 to 1:20 on both...from a pure classical ballet standpoint of carriage and technique Zmeskal was better. Things like feet and lines are decieving, but do not make one a bad dancer.

  • Lol. Seriously... No.

  • Sveta only had good, I mean great lines but not the extension that Zmeskal and Onodi. they were better in execution and extension that's right and the fact is that Zmeskal and Onodi were the best of all the gymnasts even Bogui in compulsories floor

  • That is the best back extension roll that I've ever seen. I keep coming back to this routine just to see that single element. It's out of this world her toepoint, extension, split, and the way it just rolls abck and stops right at the peak.

  • Why she scored higher on this event than Zmeskal, I'll never know. Zmeskal has impeccable flow throughout the routine. Svetlana just had great lines.

  • Zmeskal's form and extension was far inferior to Svetlana's. Everyone's was, really :) Also, Zmeskal could not capitalize on flexibility the way Svetlana could. Just compare their leg kicks. The only other gymnasts who could compare to Svetlana in all the areas that count outside of the tumbling was Grudneva and Galieva, IMO. Bogi lost compulsories only due to uncharacteristic errors on VT and BB. Other than that, her compulsories were the best in the games.

  • She scored higher then Zmeskal since her routine was much better. Zmeskal had good tumbling but her dance wasnt in the league of Boginskaya.

  • she looks a little too mechanical to me.

  • It was the construction of the exercise. Romanian choreography tended to look very mechanical.

You should watch Svetlana's 1988 Compulsory FX. The Russian choreography is much more artistic.

  • It is the choreography - I don't think it suited her as well as let's say the 85-88 compulsories. This routine was choreographed by the Romanians so it s more robotic in nature. It still looks great on her, though!

  • Agreed about the Romanian choreography. It's just not very good, very little actual dance. The tumbling lines are fine, but wasn't the point of compulsories to test both fundamental tumbling, and dance elements?

The Soviet's in '88 and the Bulgarians in '96 provided great routines.

  • does anybody know what piece of music this is?

  • If you watch Shannon Miller's compulsory routine from 92 you will see why she did not win gold. This is good, not great.

  • Sorry idiot but this routine got the highest score by far of anyone on compulsory floor and was almost a full tenth higher then Shannon's.

  • she is my favorite.

  • Highest compulsory score (9.975) at those games, and rightfully so. No one could possible deliver better compulsories than Sveta. Too bad for her other uncharacteristic bobbles during this phase of competition (VT and BB) - she could have scored near 40.

  • Perfect line and beautifully graceful. We should be so lucky.
