The issue was the suspension settings used at Le Mans to cope with the combination of bumpy high speed straights (open road) and entry into the low speed chicanes on the Mulsanne from high speed. Stiff front springs were used to control the car under deceleration with soft springs at the rear to cope with the high speed bumps. This was an at track adjustment with a failure to sufficiently compensate the damping on the rear leading to the rear suspension packing down allowing air under the car.
Think the crash was caused by tailgating (drafting) the gt one in front of it, but when the gt one pulled away fast after the corner, the sudden drag flipped the car (too much resistance at the rear spoiler) this would not happen even at max speeds, only from tailgating
@YoshiGreenBlue What I saw was that he tapped the little curb(Rumble strip, what I call it) at the edge of the track and that got air under the car and pushed against the flat underneath like an Airplane wing...
Hey, if you look at it positively without this kind of shit happening we wouldn't be so advanced in down-force technology today, or technology in general.
I think the crash was caused by the long wheel base combined with the flat bottom and the lack of downforce. When the clk gtr went over the kink air built up under the extended front nose and lifted the rest of the car.
@royaloreca i believe that CLR flipped and they canceled the project but CLK was the dominant car that took 4 straight champion ships i believe i could be wrong
@nawzy202 you're right, except the CLK never won Lemans (although that was due to the fact that the engine was never tuned for 24 hour endurance) the CLR was their first true attempt at lemans, but they screwed up the aerodynamics, it was an extremely fast and exceptional car, bar the lift it generated at high speeds.
@royaloreca Thought that CLK was the one that won the champion ships tx for info. But yea they did F up not sure what they did wrong but im guessing the bottom of the car had no air duct system to produce down force instead they had flat bottom which produced lift but again i could be wrong
@nawzy202 anytime, but you are right about the CLK-GTR winning championships, FIA GT to be exact, The test mule for the CLK was actually a Mclaren F1 that Mercedes AMG purchased,... it's a little evident in it's design if you ask me... ;-)
@nawzy202 what happened is the underside of the car is make to produce a negative force, sucking the car to the ground, the car bounced, got a lot of air underneath producing a huge positive force at that speed, sending the car skyward. the flat bottoms keep the car low as possable with a defuser in the rear to "suck" the air out, creating the negative force. the wake that f1 cars make in the rain is a good way to see this in action.
the infamous flights of the clr were caused because the car was an extreme design specifically for le mans. the le mans track is like no other, it requires so little down force so making it slippery is the primary concern. the combination of inherently little down force on the front; following another car, thus reducing the down force further; raising over the brow, making the car "go light" and a bit of air getting under the front, meant the flat underside met 200mph air forcing the car to fly.
Reading physics discussion on youtube is like listening children debate about tax reform. The problem is the light front and relatively flat bottom with tiny ground clearance. When moving forward at high speeds downhill, the air is forced and packed underneath the car at relatively high pressure, which causes lift. While the spoiler at the back continues to generate downforce, it's not enough to keep the front stabilized. The front lifts up, at which point the car receives a short flight.
my theory is that the precise position of the merc in relation to the car just in front of it caused it to lose downforce as is crested the small hill and took flight
i was watching that race live on tv... and this accident was really unusual and came from nowhere .... mercedes also withdraw the other cars, considering a faulty design.
What came out first the CLK-GTR or CLR? I think it ws the CLK-GTR iirc, but I personally prefer the CLR, they shud have made a road going version of it
It wasnt bad downforce it was the fact that the car wasnt meant to get air and once it came off the ground it was like a giant parachute to itself and took off.
In 1955 while the 24 hours of le mans, a car crashed into a wall near a tribune and its pieces flew trough the people, killing the driver and over 80 visitors, hurting over 150.
@BestManProduction webber was safe after that and he didn t need to go to hospital, the CLK had an aerodinamic problem, and the toyota GT-one create a turbulence behind her and crashed the CLK.
(sorry my english is bad because i m french and my father is doctor on that track, and he takes care of him.....
@BestManProduction it was a design flaw that caused the cars to flip, when air passed under the car the nose lifted up and the downforce from the rear wing made the car flip :)
@BMAtubes I got a official Mercedes magazine (I think its called Stars and Cars September 1997...will have to look for it since it is stashed away in the house somewhere), stating that when they built the CLK-GTR, they were building it to the tune of that R Kelly's song, now that is an coincidence

bpowersman5000 2 years ago
No you are right. Those cars produce massive downforce. It could not have been that.

My guess would be since the front of the car is what goes airborne first its not got enough downforce to hold the nose down over a bump or hill.
