@dreamteam6362 When this video was shot back in the day people smoked in the clubs; especially blues clubs. I was laughing because on the Choice Cuts DVD (with all of Pat's videos) on the commentary she got onto Neil who was smoking in the Little Too Late video (what a bad example); then when this video came on he was saying "look you have a cigarette"; she was like oh I forgot about that. (She never smoked though...and he quit smoking in the 90's).
Pat does indeed smoke! I have all the outtakes and she did about 12 versions of the song before the finished product was assembled. Sometimes she takes as many as three drags (some quite large) during the song and always at least once. But the killer is the very end when you see her seated and watching Belzer. She takes five consecutive drags during that sequence and releases at least one killer exhale while smiling. It is as gorgeous as she is. The director says she smokes and it was their idea
The thing about using cigarettes in videos and movies is that you can tell the editing order by the length of the cigarette. Sometimes it's short and then a few minutes later, the cigarette is longer ....just a thught.
Why isn't anyone allowed to "badmouth" Madonna - to me that's what she's here for! So please do, cos no one else will! May I remind anyone and everyone she isn't God, no matter what she likes to think.
Pat had such a great look for video. Not classically beautiful but DAMN she was attractive. Plus a great voice. And as always Neil on guitar. One of my favorite '80s guitarists!
The fact that Pat Benatar and Rush are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just goes to show you what a massive cluster fuck organization they really are.
@vaportrails44 Brother I AGREE 100%....I LOVE RUSH, BEEN TO 12 CONCERTS but missed Pat Benatar twice due to sickness! I love them both and the rock hall of fame is FUCKING STUPID for not having these legends!!!!
@greyhoundgrl Nahhh...that wasn't a drag she took off that cigarette @ 2:15 then, was it?...LOL. Somehow they made it look like she was exhaling, albeit a small amount.
The first time I heard this song, it blew me away! I emailed to a dj and it had the same effect on him as well. I was saddened that it didn't get the recognition that it deserved. For me, it was Pat's best song!!!!
Unbelievable talent, her best song IMO. It's unreal to me that she has not been inducted into the Rock n'roll hall of fame ...yet. You can't get much more iconic than pat!
There was a time when I would've said, "Pat Benatar with with a cigarette! Aw, dude, bogus!"(I hated smoking and smokers). Now that I smoke, I'll watch this over and over again. It's beautiful. The '80's was IT--and we'll top THAT out, someday soon. ;]
this my very favorite song by pat. i love how she sings it like a disinterested blues singer. I read an interview with her and the reason they decided on B&W and her loose clothes is she was 4 months pregnant with her daughter.
Also the man who wrote it Robert Tepper is a singer also.
The crap they have out now is a disgrace, the 80s was an awesome time for music like the 70s.
Then the 90s rolled around and it was taken over by corporate slags who wouldnt know good music from a dirty sanchez.
Always liked her. I like all her songs, at least the 10 or so I've heard. Wasn't Richard Belzer in this video, at the beginning maybe? Too bad it's cut out. I liked that part too.
I don't think she should have admitted to being 4 months pregnant in this clip since she's smoking and in a room full of smokers.
Oh, I see. There's another version of this with Belzer all throughout it. That's the one I remembered from when I used to watch a lot of music videos back in the 80's
@robwheelut First time I ever heard this. Looks like it's taken from a 40s retro film? Thanks for the great info. I am pretty much on the same page with your chronological review of music. Love 80s. the 90s--the soul dropped out of the universe and the music reflected that.
@robwheelut Robert Tepper wrote this? Never knew that. He attempted a solo career of his own but it never happened. He had one song I know of called "No Easy Way Out". LeBelAge is a great song. Love Neil Geraldo.
P.S. Not to badmouth Madonna or others, but Pat's talent is superlative. In this vid she sings the song of an idealist without a hint of passion or irony. She might as well be slopping the hogs for all the joy she demonstrates. Kudos to the director and the singer for pulling this off. My favorite video of hers for the total package (I like others better for this or that, but overall none compare).
Brittany, Madonna, Christina Aguilera and a host of singers who can only WISH they had a voice and talent like this. Pat Benatar just flips off MUSIC as easily as some people smile. WOW! If she can't dance like the other girls, that is SO pointless. It's all about the voice and presence like Pat's. Put her up there with Sade, Chrissie Hynde, and Shirley Manson for her voice, and the way she goes from Rock to Blues to Jazz . . . unequaled. Look at her total ennui in this video. Brava!
i was puzzled for years why this song didn't get more airplay until I saw the video for the first time only recently ... duh, because she's smoking in it! Another victim of bad timing with the anti-smoking police
Since getting hooked on Pat recently, I think she is wonderful. And her husband (what a true love story!) is one of the most under rated axe men of all time imo. His playing is sublime and has an almost orchestral style at times. Imagine his work scored for a string section!

Great song, it reminds me of Rick Nowels work with Belinda Carlise. But Pat created this sound first. Should have been huge. I never understand why Pat was not bigger in the UK. Oh yes....bloody Chrysalis!
