There's a massive difference between people like Cannonball Richards and Johnny Knoxville, mainly that difference is real talent. Johnny Knoxville is simply like a little boy attempting to hurt himself over and over again and does so. Cannonball Richards developed his talent, worked with it and used it to charm and entertain people the world over. Knoxville, he's always stricken me as a bit of a numbskull. But, hey, 21st Century, amiright?

Exactly, the point of Richards's act is that he has developed the skill to withstand something that normal people can not. Johnny Knoxville and all of those idiots just do shocking painful stuff for attention. A large majority of it is stuff we could all easily do if we felt like it, but aren't stupid enough. For instance, there is no skill in putting a bottle rocket into my ass and lighting it, I could easily do it, I choose not to because it's dumb. I could NOT take a cannonball to my gut.

It is amazing to me how things are reinvented and brought into the culture anew. This reminds me of the Johnny Knoxville Jackass series... it definitely has the same spirit behind it, only with closer ties to the Houdini-style stunts of the turn of the century.
