I was in NYC in 2003 for job training (paid in full by the USG--you can't beat that!) and I saw Gayle perform solo piano at the Jazz Café (also called 5C, or something like that). I was one of an audience of about 6-7 people. It was enjoyable--intimate and explorative. In between his playing, we were able to sit and speak with him. He talked a lot about John Coltrane, whom he knew and whom he greatly respects (as Gayle fans surely know).
