  • Huh. The point of tipping a tree over into the earth so that it can grow up again is?

  • @holyfuckareyoustupid

The base of the tree is still alive, and regrows. The pleached stem can take root, so you get an extra tree for free!

  • @natureheads Thank you (and again for looking past my moniker!) All is clear now. Excellent. I see the point of pleaching. But - while I have your ear - is this process tried and true? More specificly, is there a reasonable chance that doing this may kill the the tree altogether? As in - a tree in the hand is worth two in the bush.

  • @holyfuckareyoustupid

Ah, yeh - good question. Definitely worth having two trees in the bush. Sometimes if you do it wrong the laid branch breaks. But the original tree (called the 'stool') still regrows, so there's nothing lost by trying.

Lots of people think cutting a tree down kills it - and in some cases that's true - but lots of tree species will regrow. Hazel does really well after being cut down - so for thousands of years it's been a popular sustainable wood source.

  • Yes, it's a tried and tested method.
