@EhJayJC@EhJayJC And that's true in a sense, in that Jesus did perform the first Lord's Supper, and did Baptize people. But I think it was Man that gave them the importance they currently enjoy in the Catholic Church. I can find no biblical evidence that Jesus ever meant for these to be a tool for salvation, and very visible evidence (the tearing of the veil of the Holy of Holies) to the contrary... that He meant to show that we no longer needed middle men. We could come straight to him.
@anacrophobic "Baptism . . . now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 3:21; cf. Acts 2:38, 22:16, Rom. 6:3–4, Col. 2:11–12). This short piece helps eplain the Eucharist. have a look at the verses especially, and see if they make sense. If you see some problems, please let me know. God bless! w w w .catholic.com/tracts/christ-in-the-eucharist
@EhJayJC Except that God is not "in the process" of dispensing grace. It has already been dispensed, once and forever. When Jesus rose and declared victory over spiritual death, he gave us our gift of salvation. We need only accept it. He does not use the constructs of man (sacraments) to deliver this salvation. He merely waits for us to say "Ok, you were right, I was wrong, and I do need you." I guess that's where we differ. You say the sacraments were given to us by God...
@anacrophobic No just spiritual, physical too. :) And I agree in a sense; all grace is given in Christ's Sacrifice; but we tap into it in space and time through that YES! I can understand where you're coming from. But maybe I can be of some help; there is strong Scriptural proof for the importance of the sacraments, as well as historical evidence in the Church's life from day one that point to that. :) Baptism for example was integral for the Christians, and is present throughout the Bible.
Catholics are no more or less Christian than any other denomination. In every church, there are people who believe that showing up on Sundays makes them a Christian, or that because their grandparents were saved, they are too. But there are Catholics who understand that God's gift of salvation is exactly that... a gift, free of charge, for an undeserving world. Not all Catholics believe that rite and ritual are the path to salvation. Most I know don't, in fact.
@anacrophobic I'd agree with a lot of that; and the Church does teach that our salvation, indeed everything we receive from God, is a grace. We don't hold that "ritual or rite" in and of themselves are what saves us. God wants our hearts more than our bodies doing a certain action. That said, God has given us tools, Sacraments, by which we can receive that grace. The Protestant reformation divorced those two things, the Church didn't. We receive the free gift of God in Baptism, Confession...
@anacrophobic@anacrophobic the Eucharist, etc. If you'd like, I can help point out some of why the Catholic Church teaches what it does; it is all meant to bring us deeper in our friendship with God and lead us by God's grace to salvation. w w w .ewtn.com/library/COUNCILS/TRENT6. H T M . This is from the Church Council of Trent, a very beautiful summary of justification. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is a super great source if you have questions, is online. also, Catholic dot com.
God made salvation a gift for a reason. He made it unearnable because He wanted us to realize that we had to rely on Him. The entire need for salvation is a result of us wanting to do things our way. But in this one thing, we *must* do it His way. And His way requires that we rely, in faith, 100% upon Him to provide our salvation... we can't earn it, we can't pay for it. That's what makes it "mercy"... because we can never be perfect through our own power, and He knows that.
Jesus, You alone are worthy. All men are as nothing before You. There is no knowledge but Your knowledge. The actions of man apart from You are wholly worthless and contrary to You and Your will. Shut the mouths of the enemy, and of the foolish men, dear Lord. Let Your light, Your word, and Your Spirit sweep through the graveyard that is the American church. Let the sheep be seen, and expose the goats, and give the goats grace to repent and believe (as we all act as goats at times).
Thank YOU LORD JESUS CHRIST for making "THE River that washes us Clean"..Clean because of Your Precious Blood poured out for us....I LOVE YOU LORD JESUS!!!
`
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
@misleadupshrink You can only argue seriously if something matters to you, you know? And if we can't argue over things that important, what's there to argue about. As long as its down with respect and love, I'll argue till my face is blue, and I think that everyone should. :) It helps us understand and learn from others, and vice versa.
Catholicism; Or any "religion" must be looked at in the light of the Holy Scriptures. Is it Truth or is it false? What does the bible say? Without the Bible we would have no knowledge of God. Look at the Word of God and find a church that is grounded in the Word.
I was a Catholic for 48 years until I began searching the scriptures and found that most of the pilliars that the catholic church stands on are not biblical. Purgatory, Salvation thru the "sacraments" of the catholic church, infant baptism, eucharistic transubstantiation, indulgences, lifting up of the Lords mother, prayer focus.
Ephesians 2:8-9, for by grace are ye saved thru faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
The "gift" by the grace of God is FREE! As any gift is. You cannot pay for it, or it is not a gift! We cannot add to what Christ did for us. Only the blood of an innocent lamb takes away sin, and it's our faith in that all atoning sacrifice which will save us from the eternal fires of Hell. "Saved thru faith", by the grace of God.
If you are Catholic, as you read your bible, compare it to the practices of catholicism, make notes... There is no grey area, it is either truth or false. Or if you cannot find scriptural backing for a particular catholic -- ism, then it is of man and not of God. Lastly, if you review the history (secular or otherwise) of the catholic church thru the dark ages, you may discover the reason why the catholic church prospered during this dark time of humanity.
@Celticpsalm@EhJayJC wasn't this kind of argument supposed to be stopped when ALL the churches became ecumenical? There is only one faith, and that is faith in God. The day you start arguing about it is the day that ONE faith falls down. God loves us all, no matter what denomination, faith, anything. Jesus died for us all, isn't that enough?
@fezthedruid I know what you mean. :( I wish it were that easy.I love my brothers and sisters from other Christian groups. Being ecumenical doesn't mean we won't argue over things though, because their important. But at the end of the day, we do still have the hope that when we let Jesus be Lord in our life, He'll visibly heal the walls we've built and the breaks we've made in His Body. For my part in anything, and for failing to let Jesus be in charge, and failing to love, I'm truly sorry.
I have to agree, no purgatory, there is no holding pen to wait and work and have people pray you out of. That makes the work of the cross a sham. Jesus said on the cross, "it is finished..." Stand on that promise, put all your eggs in that basket...
Look, Celitcpsalm.....I know Catholics seem to be confused, but is bashing a religion really going to help us in our walk with Christ? Does it help the lost come to him? No. It doesn't, people will think "oh they hate each other, doesn't their precious book say to love? Guess they must all be Hypocrites, who would want to be a part of that???? I think I'll go be Buddhist!" I'm not saying that's EXACTLY what they'd say, but it is a possibility. God excepts all people, if THEY BELIEVE IN HIM.
have some strange customs and ways of doing things. Why do we need hail mary's? Also, I've watched a few services, they repeat a verse in a monotone voice. How does that do any good at all? A church service should be a teaching on the Bible and a communion among believers. They should be free, made up to suit the congregation. But some denominations do the same thing. No contemporary music, only old gospel. Why? God doesn't care so long as it glorifies him. There's more, but i'm done for now
I don't follow the Catholic church, nor do I claim a denomination. I read the Bible, and I pull my beliefs from that and from prayer. Jesus intercedes for us, our salvation comes from him alone. The church is not a building, it is the people. A building has no power, it is the people in the building that allows for the presence of God in which there is absolute power. A church can be a patch of grass on a hill if that is where a gathering of Christians take place. Now, the Catholic church does
Catholics believe that Grace in administered by the Catholic church NOT God. They also believe that our intercessor is Mary. They also believe in purgartory which does NOT exist. They believe that we are to confess our sins to a priest who prays to God on our behalf for our forgiveness. They worship Mary. These are all unbiblical beliefs and demonic doctrines. It is no wonder that there is a huge problem in the Catholic church of the most disgusting child abuse. It is a false Church.
@Celticpsalm Corrections: We believe that Grace is administered BY God through the Catholic Church; Mary is not God, we do not view her as such; she "intercedes or mediates" in the same manner as your Christian friend would "mediate" with God through his prayers for you. Jesus gave priests that charism through their ordination. If I can please just ask something first (and do it even just to see what our argument is) go to catholic. c o m and look under faith tracts. :) God bless and prayers! :)
1.I'm not catholic so if grace is administered "through" the catholic church I can't be saved. Clearly this is unbiblical.
2. Why in the world would you want "Mary" interceding for you? SHE IS DEAD! Furthermore JESUS is our ONLY mediator between God and man!!!! The bible is clear of this as well. If you communicate with the DEAD it is called necromancy and this is a serious sin forbidden by God because it opens the door to DEMONS!
@Celticpsalm 1) I'm not saying that there is salvation NEVER ouside the Church; but just as a Christian usually can imagine that Christ could save someone even if they never were able to hear the Gospel from a normal person, we believe that God can save souls by any means He chooses.
2) Matthew 22:23 Alright; could I ask you to simply do something for me? Go and check out Catholic Answers online and just SEE if there is some biblical support for Catholicism, even to debunk; Tim Staples utube.
@Celticpsalm: I used to believe many of the things that you are spouting off, but after research, there are MANY things that faithful catholics have that we christians don't. Seriously do more research. And it's no necromancy at all when they pray hail mary etc.... Paul himself urged us to remember us to remember the saints etc... that's what they do, they remember Mary. Anyways, we shouldn't be tearing eachother down, in fact, this is the one things that REPELS people from believing.
@Celticpsalm: While purgatory may not be completely accurate, it does talk about a place of judgement and working out our salvation.... They might be off on it, but I think it also might be a better understanding of this idea than we know. NOT that we can actually buy people out of hell or pray for them, I don't think that is accurate, but the fact that we do wait for judgement etc... anyways, I digress. I do encourage you to do more research and to remember that NONE of us really gets it right.
@Celticpsalm Who are you to criticize the servant of another? Jesus is their Master, not you. Just because you can point out the faults of Catholicism does not mean that God will judge them as you do. I'd keep your immature opinions to yourself. Oh, and have you walked a mile in their shoes?
@EhJayJC but scripture clearly states Christ is suppoesed to have that position not Mary, sorry for just jumping in to the middle of a discussion i have no problem with catholics i hate the divisions in the church but i do disagree with some of your guy's doctrines, would love to gain a better understanding of catholic faith though i grew up until maybe 5 in it and it felt very fake to me, but believe God uses all denominations for his glory and his church is made of all denominationsjust one.
@EhJayJC Hi there, I've been very reticent to personally ask my Catholic friends regarding their doctrine, cos they might feel I'm judging them. So I hope you will forgive my ignorance... But do catholics believe that Mary was also a sinner and therefore needed salvation through a Mediator? (I'm sure you know the verse I refer to: Mary's Song, where she calls God her 'Savior'). Please don't take this as a criticism. I am sincerely seeking an answer. Thanks for the website. Will check it out :)
38 John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn't a follower like us.”
39 But Jesus said, “Don't stop him, because no one who works a miracle in my name can slander me soon afterwards. 40 Whoever is not against us is for us. 41 I tell you with certainty, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to the Messiah will never lose his reward.”
Might I just add that I don't mind images of a cross - or even "Jesus" on a cross - as they just remind me of what Jesus did for me out of love. However, in my school (I live in Ireland where nearly all schools are Catholic) we have a 2 metre tall statue of a cross with an emaciated Jesus on it, which is quite disturbing, hanging at our stairs. THAT I mind. Nevermind the fact that Jesus probably weighed a perfectly average weight and was not anorexic, it's really freaky.
i just want to say that we are not put on this earth either to interpret the Bible or to remove parts that we think are unBiblical. anyways, isn't there somepart somewhere in the Bible that specifically tells us not to remove parts of the Bible?lol. And i LOVE this song!!
How gracious the water in that river is. How invigorating and freeing, how so much better than heroin or meth, longer lasting and more pure. How glorious the light that is lit from direct contact with this water and how sweet the fellowship it ignites within and without. My new drug which lifts me up without pulling me down!
Catholics believe that Grace in administered by the Catholic church NOT God. They also believe that our intercessor is Mary. They also believe in purgartory which does NOT exist. Thank you, Jesus, for providing such a river that can heal us all, and redeem us. The mercy you've shown, and the grace You give, all paid for by Your Blood. You truly do Love me. You are my shepherd. You were there in my time of need, and even to the point of death, poured yourself out for me. Thank You, Jesus!
In the pure holy river of Heave we find the eternal gift of God that river is Jesus christ!! He alone Can Save you!! Trust him and him alone and in wat he has done for you!!
Actually if the fact that he is risen is not enogh grace then theres a problem. How much more grace can tou ask for he died for our sins, made us one jew and gentile and gave us a better understanding on the law. that is grace. The crucifix is the most horable way to torture a jew in those days and even now, it is a symbol of death. And jesus is not his name thats what the romans call him its salvation that is who he is. Oh and by the way Christians is not a word only a translation. n jewsare1st
His name was Yeshua. Jesus is just an English rendering of the Greek version of his name - Iesous. The New Testament renders his name this way since most of it was written in Greek. How we pronounce His name is not important. He knows what we mean when we say Jesus. My French relatives can't pronounce my name, but I don't ignore them when they say it wrong.
This is nice alltho there to many Cross's, jesus is off the cross not on Amen to that . now a cross is fine him on the cross is another story. Also I dont think catholic images really suite this video. Nice job anyway tho.
He is risen and Catholics do proclaim that. But I think we can often receive more grace in looking at what Jesus has suffered and how He has shown He loves us, i.e. reason we usually have a crucifix and not an empty cross. Peace brother and God bless. ;) and p.s. the first Christians were Catholic. ;)
The first Catholics did not arrive until 3 centuries after Christ. The first Christians were Jews, and they preached the gospel and many Gentiles came into the fold. The Catholic Church is totally unbiblical.
Ok, maybe not wholly unbiblical, but they do have massive chunks that seem to be, and massive amounts taken from the Apocrypha - which incidentally isn't considered Biblical canon by most because of the massive contradictions it makes to the rest of the bible.
But the biblical Canon was decided on long before people decided to begin to remove certain books as unbiblical or to changes certain parts. Haha buts it's a little late and I'm quite tired but I'd love to chat with you about why I feel that the Bible really compels me to be a Catholic, and at any rate to just share our common faith and love for Jesus. God bless! Adam
@bluetube01 Actually the word "Catholic" simply means believer, so they arrived immediately. However, I do agree with you that actual Roman Catholics are not Christians.
And the Jews being the first Christians isn't that important - I don't know if you meant to draw attention to that or not, it's so hard to tell over the internet - as we are all one in Christ, and previous religion/race doesn't affect that.
"But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus"
Ephesians 2:4-6.
Sorry bro - I'm thrilled you're following Christ but I have to disagree - Christ suffered for us sure - but without his resurrection we are DEAD IN OUR SINS - praise God he is no longer on the cross.
@EhJayJC That's incorrect. The first Christians were not Catholic. The first Christians were followers of the teachings & miracles of Christ through the examples of his apostles. They were slaughtered by the millions for their faith thanks to the Romans, & it wasn't until several years later that Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus declared himself the first Pontifus Maximus, or Pope as it is now known. The last Caesar was the first Pope. This was done to ensure that the Caesar's reign would continue.
I thought this was nice music to listen to, did not know it was a debate blog! and thank you EhJayJC, feeling much less persecuted for showing up and will continue to save this listen to this nice song. Settle down. There is a lot you don't know.

(Luke 9:49-50)

Oh and by the way Christians is not a word only a translation. n jewsare1st
yehua777 2 years ago
His name was Yeshua. Jesus is just an English rendering of the Greek version of his name - Iesous. The New Testament renders his name this way since most of it was written in Greek. How we pronounce His name is not important. He knows what we mean when we say Jesus. My French relatives can't pronounce my name, but I don't ignore them when they say it wrong.

This is nice alltho there to many Cross's, jesus is off the cross not on Amen to that . now a cross is fine him on the cross is another story. Also I dont think catholic images really suite this video. Nice job anyway tho.
yehua777 2 years ago
He is risen and Catholics do proclaim that. But I think we can often receive more grace in looking at what Jesus has suffered and how He has shown He loves us, i.e. reason we usually have a crucifix and not an empty cross. Peace brother and God bless. ;) and p.s. the first Christians were Catholic. ;)

The first Catholics did not arrive until 3 centuries after Christ. The first Christians were Jews, and they preached the gospel and many Gentiles came into the fold. The Catholic Church is totally unbiblical.
bluetube01 2 years ago
Ok, maybe not wholly unbiblical, but they do have massive chunks that seem to be, and massive amounts taken from the Apocrypha - which incidentally isn't considered Biblical canon by most because of the massive contradictions it makes to the rest of the bible.
tyronelab 2 years ago
But the biblical Canon was decided on long before people decided to begin to remove certain books as unbiblical or to changes certain parts. Haha buts it's a little late and I'm quite tired but I'd love to chat with you about why I feel that the Bible really compels me to be a Catholic, and at any rate to just share our common faith and love for Jesus. God bless! Adam

@EhJayJC As a Catholic I would also be willing to participate in such a discussion. :)
scameter 1 year ago

Sorry bro - I'm thrilled you're following Christ but I have to disagree - Christ suffered for us sure - but without his resurrection we are DEAD IN OUR SINS - praise God he is no longer on the cross.
iilwjcanc 2 years ago
@EhJayJC That's incorrect. The first Christians were not Catholic. The first Christians were followers of the teachings & miracles of Christ through the examples of his apostles. They were slaughtered by the millions for their faith thanks to the Romans, & it wasn't until several years later that Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus declared himself the first Pontifus Maximus, or Pope as it is now known. The last Caesar was the first Pope. This was done to ensure that the Caesar's reign would continue.
