This song is 22 years old and it is the DEFINITION OF A TIMELESS CLASSIC. NO ONE can touch this song. GM IS THE MASTER CLASS of male song writer, performer, producer and video artistry. Michael Jackson may have been KING OF POP but GM is the KING OF Music that REALLY MATTERS. These lyrics are amazing.
Absolutely a song that gives me chills. It is beautifully sung and the message touches the heart in such a way that you never forget it. I haven't. George Michael is ultimate in this song!
This song was, is, and will be a song about PRAYING.Praying is the chance to come back to our BELIEVE. To light. To God. Stop crying and start giving and sharing. Stop believing in STUFF You can buy. It never can make You happy. THIS IS A SONG, WHERE YOU MAKE YOUR DECISION. DO I WANT TO BE A WINER, OR A LAUGHER. We have to stop our negative flow. That's all. Listen to Your heart. The mind must be controlled, it is secondary to the heart. Peace and love !
@SEHAWE There's a lot of truth and wisdom in that statement. Very good words to live by. This i such a beautiful song, both in the lyrics and the melody.
I have been listening to this song ever since it came out in 1990 along with "Jesus to a Child", it was a special pre-release record before Pride and Prejudice came out. Still love these songs.
This is NOT the original music video, there are no special effects on the words, the lettering is different and there's no big picture of a crowd at the end. The question is.. why would they make a new one for the sake of Vevo when they could just upload the original?
This happened 21 years ago and I'm sure its been happening since time began and now its happening again. The point is, we humans are so dumb and never learn.
@Oneversal You coping o.k. mate? The future is never lost, the past is gone and can't be changed, but worrying about it and wishing it was different is what leads to stress, anxiety and suffering. Focus on what's happening right now 'cause this is the only place we can make the changes required to live a happier life, you've seen how impermanent life is so why waste it on what's gone before when you can truly, and not religiously or anything like that, move on and live again. Peace.
@Puchi1959 Thank you, I'm glad you found some value in those words and I appreciate your kind comment. Much as humanity as a whole may not have learned much, as long as each of us can continue to learn and grow as part of that then everything will be fine. Optimistic and utopian as it may seem, it's much more fun to see life through that lens. : )
@IdentMusic Thanks again...wise man! A pleasure to keep on reading your concepts. Life is much more painless if we see it through optimistic and utopian eyes, undoubtedly. Regards!
When George Michael recorded this in 1990 he must have had a crystal ball to see in the future because here in 2011 the lyrics to this song really hit home!!!
@chrisporter61 It must be some kind of joke, Mr. Porter, but now, 28/01/12, I was going to write the same idea you wrote three months ago. Each word of this lyrics don't lose their meaning in 22 years...seems we didn't learn anything, did we?
@chrisporter61 you can say that again wow for sure... and his song faith i sung it on stage at a talent show in 5th grade he was my fave. singer in that era.... and most of his song hit home now and hit home then really too ...
We have returned to these days of recessive late 80s. Some would say its a natural cycle, but if you look close its not. There are reasons for all recessions, but people do not look, listen, or learn.
this song is a real life changer...george michael is deffenatly one of the greatest artist of all times...oh and i know no ones caresbut im 14 years old and i listen to him :P just so everyone knows there is still teenagers with good taste in music out there xD watever love this song...it brings a very beutiful message :DD
Yep we are all sinners, turning our back on the heavenly father and his book of how to live, god help us. It is said that we only turn to god when the suffering becomes too great, and that sure worked for me.
Amazing, insightful and deeply personal - Wow, what a song. Didn't he record after his first lover died of HIV? It would explain the hurt, pain and utter feeling of despondence. At the time of his death, GM was not openly Gay - imagine losing the one you love and not being able to grieve publicly........
@RSH110871 That's right! George said he wrote this song thinking in Anselmo Feleppa, an important person in his life; he knew him in Brazil when he went to the music festival "Rock In Rio", an outrageous perfomance the two days he was on stage...
You know most people say this is a very depressing song. George one time on an MTV interview said and its true that , its a song he wrote to kind of wake people up and realize where our world is heading if we don't change. He said people are asleep and don't realize that evil and corruption are at work and we hold the key but people are fed so much propaganda from tv and media that we are being sadly misled and we need to wake up!Also One of his best lyrical writings by far I think!
@ou812BD it is depressing, but only in the sense that he is absolutely right and, sadder, our daily self-interests breeds apathy, and apathy allows things to go on as usual. Iam guilty of it as well. This song hit me like a ton of bricks back then ( I was 19 years old ), but besides being more sympathetic toward the less fortunate by donating money, food, clothes to charities, or buying something to eat for a homeless person, I still dont do much about it.
@longfellowrocked I think the thing that bothers me is that people today are so caught up on insignificant things and not really looking at the full picture and what is really going on! I am not as charitable as I should be but I do try to spend time with a little six year old boy in big brothers and big sisters and give him some hope in his world which is really something that most people would not relate to or understand. Thanks for the reply! can i send you a friend request??
and wow again, i am reading the lyrics and thinking they must have been written about what we have been going thru out here in the last 3 weeks .. george you are a visionary ... and we are "praying for time"
I just want to remark that it is so typical that the YouTube (Google) puts the crap queen lady gaga`s advert to frame this masterpiece. If only one song had been written in the 20th century this should be the one. It changed my life.

is there a god ? if he was real why does he not show himself i aint relegois but everytime i listen to this song i ask my self this question all the time and it is way to late
This is an amazing song. I see it as a pessimist companion of John Lennon's Imagine.
We can't pray for God to clean up the mess that we created, at best we can pray for him giving us enough time to clean it up for ourselves before it's too late. Haunting.
As for the video, it looks to be vintage. It might in fact be a rough draft version of the video that was released, which certainly is prettier and flows better. But putting this version up is probably an honest mistake on Sony BMGs part.
I am A child of the 70. Gearge has a succinct way of putting things.Considering that he was tied to a lable that apparently cared only about sucking all the marrow from its artists I am surprised that they ever got anything out. One thing is for certain and that is He was great (Fact) and for one I miss him immensly!!! anyone got anything to say about it can come see me and get their bitch asses kicked. r.o.l.f. Gearge long overdue a comeback Sir!!!
@Jqx5 you have got to be having a fkin laugh and the eight idiots who thumbed you up...if this particular white text on a black backround isnt quite right...you could make the original yourself with the basic movie maker in about ten minutes.....its the song that is important....not the text font...if this is all you people have to worry about...then perhaps theres no point in praying for time.....its too late....perhaps all we can hope for is the end of time.
What an intellectual distraction, even today, from all the talentless boobs who have to dress in weird clothes and claim to be gay friendly to sell records...perhaps the best video (upon original release) ever made. What a statement against fame and the state of the world from, at that time and still today a living legend, one of the biggest pop stars the earth has ever seen.
I was a punk/metalhead back when this came out, and i remember being totally shocked when a saw this video...i had to admit i actually liked a George Michael song!!! 21 years later and it still has the emotional authenticity that very few songs can actually capture without feeling preachy or contrived.
@Knucklesound I'm 38 and mainly listen to punk too. The lyrics are brilliant in this song. I bought this album when it came out. Much respect to George Michael for doing what he did. He's least popular record, but the best.
Could this song be any more relevant than it is today? Incredible lyrics for a "pop" song. Have you folks heard Carrie Underwood's version? Very moving.
Heard this song for the first time in over 10 years last night on a cable music channel. It's even more poignant now then it was when it came out 21 years ago.
@PopCulture20 VERY simple, George Michael had just came off a massive album known as "Faith", and if memory serves me correctly this was the first single off the followup album. So obviously everyone was still hungry for George Michael music
@SpectreNUT Oh so what you're saying is that this song went to #1 as a result of everyone's ongoing interest in George Michael after he just came the album ''Faith''. That explains why a lot of songs in 1990 had the #1 spot even though they didn't have #1 quality. Remember that awful ''I'll Be Your Everything'' by Tommy Page & ''If Wishes Came True'' by Sweet Sensation? What were people thinking back then?
@PopCulture20 While I didnt like Tommy Page or Sweet Sensation, I DID like this particular song by George Michael. Music was changing during the early 90s, but this song and style still stayed true to George Michael's style from the Faith album. I didnt think this song was as great as any song off "Faith" but still an amazing and beautiful song nonetheless.
@PopCulture20 Not every song has to have catchy hook or melody necessarily. Just enjoy the beauty of the song itself. This song reminds me of Careless Whisper for some reason. Very slow tempo song, which I am more a fan of than faster grooving songs.
@PopCulture20 what??? do i have to explain as well...shit in hell. this isn't a radio jingle it's a message...watch this again and turn off the sound and read the words...it needs no tune at all...it has a little...but a catchy hook??? u r definately your mothers son.
WONDERFUL SONG, NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT HIM, THIS "ONE" COMES FROM THE BOTTOM OF HIS GUTS FOR ALL OF US TO ENJOY. BEST LINE IN THIS GEM I BELIEVE IS: HE CAN'T COME BACK CAUSE HE'S GOT NO CHILDREN TO COME BACK FOR....
@MrChiffy I had to personally repent for that line. I remember falling in love with this song when I was a kid _ too deep for my own good :-). Sooo true. STILL...
@MrChiffy for the everyday person what choice do they have...most of us dont have fuck all anyway..let alone give it to others...the sad fact is those that have keep it, and the have nots can go to hell...no-one choses where or when to be born
@MrChiffy You said it, friend, and kudos for having the good grace to admit it. I admit that I haven't been as charitable as I feel I should. Best wishes for you and George. Zounds, I do love this song.

Knucklesound 8 months ago 30
@Knucklesound I'm 38 and mainly listen to punk too. The lyrics are brilliant in this song. I bought this album when it came out. Much respect to George Michael for doing what he did. He's least popular record, but the best.

Could this song be any more relevant than it is today? Incredible lyrics for a "pop" song. Have you folks heard Carrie Underwood's version? Very moving.

Heard this song for the first time in over 10 years last night on a cable music channel. It's even more poignant now then it was when it came out 21 years ago.

@Jqx5 if I remember correctly, at the bottom of the video appeared the cover of the album.

@costyytsoc what are u talking about dumbass? u make no sense at all.
PopCulture20 8 months ago
@PopCulture20 VERY simple, George Michael had just came off a massive album known as "Faith", and if memory serves me correctly this was the first single off the followup album. So obviously everyone was still hungry for George Michael music
SpectreNUT 8 months ago
@SpectreNUT Oh so what you're saying is that this song went to #1 as a result of everyone's ongoing interest in George Michael after he just came the album ''Faith''. That explains why a lot of songs in 1990 had the #1 spot even though they didn't have #1 quality. Remember that awful ''I'll Be Your Everything'' by Tommy Page & ''If Wishes Came True'' by Sweet Sensation? What were people thinking back then?
PopCulture20 8 months ago
@PopCulture20 While I didnt like Tommy Page or Sweet Sensation, I DID like this particular song by George Michael. Music was changing during the early 90s, but this song and style still stayed true to George Michael's style from the Faith album. I didnt think this song was as great as any song off "Faith" but still an amazing and beautiful song nonetheless.
SpectreNUT 8 months ago
@SpectreNUT There's no catchy melody or hook in this song. I still don't see the big deal in this song.
PopCulture20 8 months ago
@PopCulture20 Not every song has to have catchy hook or melody necessarily. Just enjoy the beauty of the song itself. This song reminds me of Careless Whisper for some reason. Very slow tempo song, which I am more a fan of than faster grooving songs.

PopCulture20 7 months ago
