Very, Very Impressive! Indeed. Thanks for the Performance and efforts!
I assume the performance took place in the spring of 2007. I hope the choral group got a chance to perform this song in front of a Chinese audience before most of them graduated from high school. I have no doubt that if they did, they would have received the ovation of a lifetime!! Bravo!
good job! Especially like the soprano solo as she sounds like my idol LiHsiangLan from my forefather's time who was the original singer. Always a pleasure to see this very beautiful old classic sexy number being performed proficiently by others since the original singer is no longer around to perform.
I would like to thank these young people from the bottom of my heart.
First, for being broadminded enough to consider learning a Chinese standard loved by millions of native Chinese speakers.
And secondly, for being respectful enough of an alien culture to take the time to learn it as well as they did.
I can only assume they learned it by sheer rote, the way I myself, who am bilingual in English and Chinese, learn opera arias and art songs in Italian, German, and French.
Oh my god ! this is a truly amazing performance! I would give you a 10/10 rating!Such a wonderful choir.
Bravo! To the lead singer, you deserve a gold medal!
I hope you will sing us more mandarin songs like the very famous Taiwanese song, "green island serenade" and the first mandarin song sung by John Denver " Far away land" and Dilber Yunus's " A night on the grassland" - chow yuan zi yue.
Absolutely wonderful performance. Mandarin pronounciation was faultless. If you close your eyes, you would think you're listening to a Chinese HS choir.
First of all I'd like to say that for a Western choir to sing this is very courageous indeed. With your experience in Asian languages you should move on to explore others and further develop your potential!
The tenors and sopranos should work on the high notes some of which were very flat.
The last high A was excellent though, was the female solo the only one holding it? :P
One outstanding point is that in chinese "xiang" is pronounced with the "s" phonetic not the "sh" phonetic.
I did some research. This song was from the 1940s. Originally sung by a Japanese singer in Shanghai. You can find the old performance (probably the original) on youtube, watch?v=WlxRMW19qJs
Teresa didn't start singing in 1940, did she? This song is much older than Teresa Teng. It was a song by Li Xiang Lan 李香蘭, a Japanese spy in China before WWII. In fact, Teresa Teng sang many of Li Xiang Lan's songs. Just Google 李香蘭 or search for 李香蘭 in youtube.
Dannygirl, have you finally got it right? Never heard of Li Xiang Lan? She was famous during WW2. Other songs she sang include San-Nian, Mai Tang Ge, etc. Both my grandma and mum both listened to her songs / saw her movies. Li was born in Manchuria to Japanese parents. She helped propagandize Japanese occupation during WW2 in her movies. After WW2 she revealed her identity as Yoshiko Yamaguchi. However she continued to have a career in HongKong in the 50's.
haha so cutee! although its a little bit blaring, and it needs to be more flowy and expressive, it was a really good attempt! haha (: and the pronounciation is wrong at times but its cute. my choir (cedar girls secondary school choir) sang that on numerous occasions, but it was a slighlty different version with piano. nonetheless good try (:
a while ago, i just youtubed a malay acapella group doing a rendition of this song and i thought they were marvellous. then i stumbled across this youtube video of young caucasians attempting to do the same and guess what? you guys blew me away too! as a chinese myself, i thought your rendition would sound really weird because of the accent and stuffs like that, but i was able to understand every word and found myself smiling. thats really impressive and i think you guys deserve a praise. :)
Thank you! It was wonderful to see how well you have all sung this favourite of mine. I am Chinese and I understood every word of it. Great performance!
AWESOMEEE.... hen ke ai.. hahahaha... it means it's great.. well I am not originally from Chinese, anyway.. my mom is a great fan of Teresa Teng (the original singer), it's great.. good job
Overall very accurate pronunciations and excellent tune. An excellent performance!
