Yes, the B-17 is small, even when compared with a B-24 or a B-29 but she certainly is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever to grace the skies and her contribution to the war effort we will never be able to emphazise enough
I was fortunate to see a B17 in Seattle back in 1995. It was a remarkable experience to see it flying and being able to walk around and even touch it. Great flying machine.
@flyinDPOD Sadly, this is/was Liberty Belle...the one that burned after the pilot landed safely last month in the corn field because of an engine fire. :( another poart of our history gone.
Beautiful aircraft, equipped with wonderful radial engines. Surprising small in person, the young men who were flying them into battle had to feel like they were boarding a coffin, and sadly many of them were.
How can you survive swarms of ME109's, blanketing flak guns, and never enough fuel or fighter cover for 25 missions?
This was an excellent plane to have flown in. The roar of the engines sounded even better in the sky.

@ElMon25
According to wikipedia there are about 12 airworthy B-17's and another dozen or so potentially restorable airframes.

Octane 130!
Back in the day, it was different though.
It's avgas with a higher octane rating I believe.
