Update:2 weeks on now. Numb lips, numb fingertips, Dr. pepper tastes horrible, jumbled words,slurred speech where I sound drunk, I talk with a lisp at times and even more dizzy at times. To top it off my Neuro said my dose would be ADJUSTED, so this means UP since I am on a low dose right now. Oh, I have had 2 migraines since starting it too. i know this drug works for a lot of people..however, after taking this drug for 3 years i finally figured out this drug was the reason of my 30% hair loss.. it's caused a lot of short term memory loss for me. i also had horrible problems with my eyes that I thought were new side effects of my migraine headaches.. nope it was because of the dr. upping the dosage of this medication. i lose weight on the medication.. the moment i went off i gained 10 lbs in 1 week. btw it never helped my migraines.

IMPORTANT: I was on topamax for 2years....Now I am on Keppra and Lamictal. The minute I went of the topamax it was like i was being born again. My head was clear, I wasnt lazy anymore, I didnt sleep all day, I could communicate effectively and efficiently with the people around me. Topamax took 2 years of my life away from me dont let it do this to you. This drug should not be used...I am only 21 I want those years back

@wharfrat89 Please, do you mind telling me what dosage you were on? Was it for epilepsy or migraine? I've been taking 50 mg per day for the past 3 days, but for psychiatric reasons (compulsive behavior). I imagine your dosage was high, like around 100, 200mg per day, for you to feel sleepy and dizzy?

One thing pharmacist forgets to mention is rare risk of a very dangerous side effect called ACUTE angular glaucoma, which can render you blind. It's rare, so don't freak out, but if your eyes start getting super red, hurt, your vision gets blurry and you feel pressure, see a doctor asap. And God forbid this happens to a NON verbal autistic or disabled or elderly person who can't tell you.

After having an MRi and lumbar puncture to rule out anything sinister that could've been causing my headaches, I was told I was having a less severe migraine than what I'd previously been having. I was prescribed Topiramate yesterday but I'm now having serious doubts about taking this drug. I have two children, one with autism and the thought of having these side effects whilst trying to care for them is making me want to cry.

However, they just kept getting worse and worse, increased anxiety led to a strange change in consciousness which made me feel out of touch with reality. I didn't know what was real and fake, everything outside of my body felt fake and everything inside felt very very real. Oh my fucking god, Topamax is the words drug I've ever had the misfortune of taking. I have epilepsy and my doctor suggested it as an alternative to depekote which made me gain massive amounts of weight. Its weight loss side effect was supposed to allow me to be able to lose all that I had gained on Depekote and allow me to live a normal life for once in my life. First side effects included numbness and tingling of the face, this stunk but was marginally bearable to live a life without being fat

I've been popping TOPIRAMATE 100MG & 200MG twice a day with two 100MG DILANTIN pill's twice a day for about 8 years now, and I will till the day I die. Thank God for generic drugs, because the cost of TOPAMAX will cause you to go broke.

You can say that again. I take Topamax plus several other very expensive medications every month and as a result I'll NEVER have anything ever again in life due to the high cost of these prescription drugs. Although I'm glad I feel better, one has to choose which method of decline they want: Pain-for-life or Poor-for-life.

My friend has Multiple Sclerosis. She also is a recovering addict. She is having a horrible time getting something to help her with pain. She wants to stay away from Narcotics. She was prescribed Topiramate today but we feel like the doctor is not being proactive in her treatment of MS or the pain. I've been on topamax almost a year. 200 mg a day. all other medications have failed miserably and this one has been the only one to keep me seizure free with minimal side-effects (weight loss, memory loss, tingling) up till now. I'm not sure I can take switching meds again. has anyone else had poor sight reactions?????

I have to take 100mg per day (because of my epilepsy).... but then i also started noticing that... so i begin to take 50mg per day.... and now it´s better (maybe because i sometimes forget to take them =/ )

In the 4-5 years I took Topamax, it not only gave me kidney stones, but it changed the taste of food for me, made me feel completely stupid since I couldn't think of the most obvious words, I now need to wear glasses, and I lost weight. Not to mention it gave me depression. Not worth it.

It causes severe 'tingling' but something like painful pins and needles.. idk, if you're under 110 pounds you're more likely to get side effects. My neurologist warned me about it and I get a lot of the side effects. Fatigue, dizziness, pins and needles, numbness, - here's a hint - TAKE POTASSIUM SUPPLIMENTS! my doctor told me it helps for the side effects and it really does :)

i take topamax. i rub my feet on the ground like crazy to stop the tingling, which helps. i have headaches because of hydrocephalus and Topamax kills them with no problem.

Woow I posted that comment a long time ago. Since then I've found out ALL of my other health issues are due to Topiramate. I'm not kidding - my neurologist told me "Get off of it, right away." I lost about 20 pounds? It's not a good thing cause I can't stop unles I get off. It hurts my joints SOOO BADLY I can't walk. I'm not exaggerating. It hurts my stomach to the point of not eating and my throat to the point of not talking. I'm underweight and almost rotting now, but getting off it.

@NikkiBabycakes when i came off this medication the joint aches were so almost completely unbearable.. i can totally relate. there were days when i did not even get out of bed. i had to go off of this medication very slow because of how bad the joint muscle aches were. i'm so sorry you had the same horrible problems with this medication. i also had my hair falling out as well. once i went off this medication all the horrible side effects reversed.

@howardkevinm I was born with hydrocephalus and an arachnoid cyst..I had a shunt revision in 2009, and my headaches got better..but now they're coming back..I was on Elavil for 2 months and I've been off of it for 4 days now (due to heart palpitations). My French teacher told me to talk to my doctor about Topamax, but I'm..kind of scared. It seems like all it really does is make headaches go away, but it piles on MORE side effects. do you...think Topamax is worth asking my Neurologist about?

Topamax is a wonder drug. Other than dehydration and memory loss i have very little to no side effects. I love it, especially after spending 12 years on depakote, the pill from hell. Kepra is ok, but at a 3000mg a day will actually cause seizures, atleast it did in me. I just love topamax. I know its different in each person.

I've been taking topamax now for over 2 years. My dose is 900mg a day. (500mg in morning, 400mg at night) Seizure free for over a year now. I was diagnosed with Adult Onset epilepsy in May 2007.

My life has changed dramatically and so has my personality on this drug, however, I prefer to stay seizure free and happy. Weightloss is one of the side effects I have encountered on the meds in addition to taste change and memory loss. Fatigue is also an issue.

Since it has been prescribed to my sister as a preventitve for migraines and mild seizures her mood and general attitude about life has changed drastically. I feel this medicine while beneficial to some needs more FDA research. There are numerous reports of strange mood swing and depression linked to this drug

In Israel, it's sold as Topamax and Topatrim and you can only get it through a neurologist.

I know people who get results ONLY from it and I know people who get no results from it. I just started it for migraines, strange aura that's "seizurelike," bipolar, and also cuz I'm overweight. If it helps with some of those... well.. I'll be happy!

before taking any preventative meds I was basicly living at the hospital. I've been on it for on month now. I am switching from from Elavil which packed the weight on and I still had many breakthrough migraines.

So far so good with topamax. I haven't had a migraine in a month which hasn't happened in years.

its the best newer anticonvulsant I think as i was on dilantin for 38 years! yikes it ruined all my bones then it was ruining my liver so I had to get off of the dilantin. So now Im on the topamax. No med is 100 percent safe I think

I just started taking Topamax yesterday, and I really hope that it does help with the weight loss. That might actually be a nice side effect. I'm on it to treat my migraines and to help with my mood swings. My neurologist referred me to a psychiatrist, because they think I'm bipolar, and apparently this medication can be used for that as well

het is zelfs van een nederlandse fabricant (mede). Dus je kunt het gewoon met een recept van de arts krijgen. Weet niet of je het snel krijgt. Ik krijg het via de psychiater, gezien ik het voor mn PTSS heb (nog niet begonnen overigens).
