That is not entirely true, hash oil can be smoked, or baked into food and ingested, it is extremely potent but not harmful. The usual process to make it is just grinding up weed, putting it in a tube with a large particle filter and pouring butane, alcohol or other solvents through it, butane is good because it quickly evaporates, and is less toxic. The oil is around 70%+THC/cannabinoids and the rest is resin/plant matter.

The "liquid smoke" is definitely not produced to save the environment or improve the consumer's health. It is simply a lot easier to sprinkle this over your ready-made food on some assembly line or dunk it into your 10.000 cubic feet BBQ sauce container. It allows you to add the smoke flavor just like any other flavor in an industrial food production.

Yeah, since an entire industry is built out of it, I'd say that answers your question. But do you even understand what type of smoke they are talking about? Meat has to be fired to be cooked, therefore the taste of the fuel source becomes trapped inside the meat. So people choose tasteful flavors of smoke, it's only good tasting smoke not like cigarettes or burning plastic.
