  • Wish Trey had cut loose at the end after the horns played their rhythm solo. Without that it's just another cover.

  • 10-29-02 I was there!!!!!

  • this a trumpet playing rock and roll band were going to do all the guitar parts on horns you know where to stick it dire straits

  • btw who could seriously dislike this video ....awww did you get bored by the smarts of the band covering a genuine classic, quality of the video? or just those fuckers that dislike every video they come by....whatever your reasons i hope you listen to the song once more and understand what its about

  • great job yes and its not just the molly hahaha

  • i like phish, trey, mark knopfler, and the dire straits but the horns just don't do justice compared to Mark's guitar playing in this song. The horns are playing most of the leads.

  • If you don't like this, why watch? Go watch some other videos to suit your tastes. What is food to somebody might be a poison to somebody. I don't think you need to tell anybody else that this video sucks for you because somebody else will always like it.

  • If ya ain't got it in ya, ya can't blow it out

    --Louis Armstrong

  • Nice video buddy, just got to see it in atlanta. But he was savin it up for saturday night!!

  • Does anyone wonder why this music is good? I don't get it. I've tried to listen to it, I still don't get it.

    What's the fascination with this?

  • i think that it is that people like trey, keep that spirit of the 60's bands (ex. grateful dead), alive!!! plus they are pretty darn good

  • @junior61106 omg we should talk. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone or something. I just don't get the fascination with this group. I totally do not understand why they have the longest set at the Hangout music fest this year; when there are so many better talents like Ray Lamontagne, Ben Harper and the Relentless 7, and John Legend; whom have all shorter sets.

  • Finally, somebody agrees with me. We must be the only 2 people who feel this way. People have been so offended at what I said about this music. I thought I was the only one. Thank god I'm not. I just viewed your channel, I really liked it.. It was really cool.

  • @pinkamos omg? like you're a custy brah, thats why you dont get it. your n00bs showing..

  • @junior61106 This song in particular? I guess it's a little boring for my tastes

Trey's band in general? Because they blend rock and roll's harmonic language with the form and tradition of jazz.

  • heard this in MKE last night. The horns were on FIRE.

  • Yeah! So psyched for February TAB tour! See you for the midwest run...

  • the horns playing the guitar fills are sickkkk

  • i think the vocals were really awesome. Even better than some of the mic whispering Knopfler gets away with.

  • GREAT arrangement, just wish Trey would rip some of those licks instead of the horns... Especially the little one-measure phrases, he could really pull it off. i Love Trey!!!

  • holy shit that place was jumpin! the crowd was nuts!

  • ITS THE TRUTH DUDE!!!

  • nice concept

  • "Killer" Russel B. Remington

  • the did this in Detroit, too. The house was SHAKING. The ushers that worked at the theater were even jumping. I was like 2 rows away. Ahhh memories. Thanks!

  • Yes, the horns playing the guitar solo is cool. It was first done by the great Frank Zappa during his 1988 tour when his horn section played the guitar solo during his cover of Stairway to Heaven.

  • yes!! i would have to agree about the horns doing the guitar solo.....that was bad ass!

  • the horn transcription of the guitar solo is epic.

  • I was here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow this is an excellent video... and i would agree that trey is aiming for the voice of the original song... cuz its very similar

  • My gosh, trey's voice sounded horrible.

  • i'm guessing you've heard the original, ut i think that is sort of what he was going for, no?

  • Wow I was at this show! First time playing in Kentucky. We drove down from Columbus for this. Great show!

  • thats the cool thing about music and art

you can think someone is awesome and that someone can be total crap to someone else.

    no ones the best

    no ones the worst

beauty (or guitar talent in this case) is in the eye of the beholder

  • Trey is more than amazing guitarist. Mezmorizing song. wish I could see him do this live

  • obviamente cualkiera sabe k sultans of swing se toka kon guitarra y mucho mas ese solo del final pero las trompetas y el sax se escuchan muy bonito

  • trey is amazing, but he is not the best living guitarist by any means..you do know jimmy page is still alive right? dweezil can also play circles around trey, dont get me wrong though trey is amazing, much love.

  • Yep and they have completely different styles, so your comment doesn't hold much girth now does it? The fuck kind of a comparison is Zack Wylde to Carlos Santana? There isn't one. Ignorant pieces of shit like you need to realize that.

Trey could play like Knop if he wanted to, and Knop could play like Trey if he wanted to. It's fucking practice and developing your sound, obviously it's not impossible since they both did it.

    What a revelation.

  • you sir, are a douche

  • I didn't know smart people left comments on youtube. Your comment actually looks like you can think objectively and not be an idiot, which is a rare find on youtube, especially in music talent debates.

  • "trey is a sub-par talent". hahahahahahaha...you mean like you are a sub-par excuse for a human, wookie? then how come all of these storied guitarists heap accolades on trey and his accumen?

  • I love it! Three people: momadance02, phishead07, and nstazo3 all reply with personal insults instead of any intelligent comments. Instead of debating the issue with any facts, all you can do is get personal. Talk about weak minds! You guys must all be products of our government schools, because your debating skills appear non-existent. To paraphrase the famous quote goes; "in a battle of wits, you are unarmed men".

  • you redact your presumptuous and unfounded criticism of trey and answer my question and perhaps, i will withdraw my insult. otherwise, i will just have to continue disregarding and disrespecting your opinion. :-)

  • i am a product of public schools and i was captain of the decate team. you sirs are neither gentlemen nor scholars.

  • sweet the decate team

  • debate team. we were master debaters all throughout high school.

  • Trey is THE BEST guitarist alive today!

  • Besides your note, you can totally tell it's Tony Markellis 'cause he's like 3x bigger than everyone else. lolz

  • i love how the intricate guitar lines shredded so memorably by mark are done on horns in trey's arrangment...sweet! jen rules!

  • SO CLEAN!

  • well im glad i could help! i only know because i play guitar and saxophone...

  • on your video you labeled the guy playing bari sax as playing clarinet...

  • very Zappa-esque, i like it.

  • Yes, Frank did that with Stairway to Heaven, he arranged Page's solo for a 4 piece horn section in the late 80's

  • none of that was improv...you sound silly when you dont know that that's how the song was written and played originally. it is cool, though, how a group of horn players got that solo done in unison, on HORNS, which i imagine would be pretty touugghhhh

  • yep, pretty much a straight forward and tight arrangement that is almost note for note to the original.

The only difference being that the last solo (which would normally be played on guitar) has been arranged for horns. But, it is exactly the same as the original (guitar).

Trey's solo is also a note for note copy.

Probably the tightest and neatest cover of this tune. But, that should be expected. It is Trey and his road band. They are supposed to be good.

  • I was there second row by the horn section

  • miss ya trey....

  • @schmohawks Well, as of night before last (6/14/2011), he is back in every way shape and form. It was my first time seeing Phish, or even Trey for that matter, since the IT festival in 2003. He is in such great shape. He looks good, he sounds good... It's great to see.

  • Seeing as I am a HUGE Dire Straits fan this was awesome to see in person. Brings back good memories with Big Red, hopefully we'll get some more of those soon. I also agree with the earlier poster that it would have been nice to see trey shred Knopflers solo, oh well.

  • I think this is also an homage to Zappa who performed a "have the horn section take the legendary rock guitar god solo, AND do it note for note, AND kick ass on it" arrangement of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.

  • me too, trey's the man

  • Flippin Awesome!

  • dammit I was living in lexington and I didnt go cus of a silly MA 109 test. I should have just chalked that test up as a loss

  • thanks for adding this... very cool - I have never seen this.

  • standard on this tour, but my first and only thanks

  • Anyone know what show?

  • Louisvile Kentucky, October 2002.

  • That's funny. I'm from Louisville, was at that show and thought this song was the highlight of the night. I did'nt know if this song was a standard for this paticular tour. Thanks for the info.

  • Show...nice version

  • BAD ASS.

  • john has a point, the arrangement of this tune is pretty unique

  • Not all that original scootily, the horn section is simply playing all the guitar parts that Mark Knopfler plays on the original. I wished Trey would have played those and especially played the solo at the end rather than the horns. Still a cool cover though.

  • Awesom

  • nice
