  • I might add that fundmentaly your rhythm MUST be played accurately. accurate rhthm is paramount ! Nice andd clean and fluid. Don't put it off! Get a metrome. Playing with a metronome will help it be accurate. "Music is

    rhythm" thnx

  • Country,Bues, Jazz, Rock, Metal ETC. Everything is made out of blues.

  • i want to know Justin's opinion on John Mayer...he's who got me interested in blues. i personally think he's great....i can LITERALLY hear words or stories in his guitar playing alone...so i think he's great. just curious why Justin didn't mention him at all

  • Dude your the best. Donation coming your way. The best online lessons I've ever seen. Thanks

  • u re good man

  • I used to think that Justin talked too much but then I realized that you have to get up to speed and rhythm ( no pun) with what he's trying to convey. Thanks Justin. You've helped me on my guitar journey tremendously. Now , will you please get my band a gig? ;)

  • Wtf is at the end of the video?

  • @BruceMac9 Tasmanian devil, as he is from tasmania australia, and the tasmanian devil is an animal native to tasmania

  • Can't figure out this man's accent. Aussie? Welsh? English? O.o

  • @94Danimal Australian, originally from Tasmania. now lives in london.

  • he just talks the whole time!

  • half of your vid is you talking

  • Brilliant teacher well done Justin!

  • What are these "MX Tabs" Justin's talking about?

  • Don't confuse the "Three Kings" with the "The Wise Men" who brought gifts on Xmas,, even though Justin's been bringing us free gifts for years.

  • I've been playing with bad habits for 40 years. Thanks for your help with improving my playing. Well done.

  • One of, if not THE best explantions about creating great solos that I have ever heard.

  • Brilliant stuff, great teacher... lots of talking but it was all worth listening to!!! thank you!!

  • Loving it already.

  • good teacher...

  • very valuable information. thanks much!

  • You are such a great teacher. Thanks so much for sharing your talent in such a clear way. I have learnt so much in just one lesson.

  • @Royisinabox I think I can help. There is a "blues scale" that consists of an extra half step interval between the 4 and the 5. So in the key of A, you would go A, C, D, D#, E, G, and back to A. The D# is that extra "blues note". There is also the mixolydian scale, which is a combination of major and minor pentatonic. I usually think of it as mixing the two, maybe playing in the major and landing on the 5th as my target note, and then playing in the minor and wrapping it up on the root.

  • the lick at 1:23 sounded like Money-pink floyd

  • thank you for your videos. ignore the haters. you rock man

  • @findlaymcarthur this is the basics idiot hes not teaching it this lesson he's giving an overview

  • he takes to long

  • I like this video. Thank you for your sharing. Hope to see next your video.

  • I've been playing guitar for 4 years now, and you in your video's have taught me more than I have ever learnt in those years. Cheers bro.

  • Omgsh. You are the answer to my prayers of curing my horrible guitar lead playing. I'm so in! God bless ya!

  • i wish i had more money to donate to your site other than what i have, you are a godsend friend.

  • Excellent, this helped immensely - Thank you!

  • SUUUPER cooolest guy on youtube,no doubt.

  • THUMBS UP FOR THAT WEIRD THING AT THE END!!!

  • Jason, your courses are phenomena and contain more information that courses for which I payed hundreds of dollars. Count on me to buy a few DVD sets. Thanks SharonE

  • Justin, your course is great. I payed big money for less information; consequently, you can count on my buying some of your DVDs in the near future. thanks fro the free lessons. SharonE

  • I notice that there are 22 thumbs downs. What is wrong with these people? Justin is a great teacher giving away gold for free! On my own channel, I have had to suffer all kinds of insults just because I edited a 60 minute video down to 5 x 10 minutes. It took me hours and I only did it because I wanted to share the music.

Another great teacher is Adam Gussow. If you are ever tempted to learn the harmonica, check him out. He's got about 150 vids at the moment.

  • Wow man... This was so easy to understand. Thumbs up for you!!!

  • Justin, you're the king!

  • Best teacher on the net, no doubt. Thanks mate, your efforts are highly appreciated :)

  • a great teacher and also very funny ! Starting from #1 with your blues lead guitar lessons :D!

  • Oh my God, a youtuber who isn't trying to sell his face, inflate his ego, or is incredibly annoying; even better, he's a fantastic teacher! Awesome stuff man.

  • super, der Mann!

  • great lesson man!!!! letters words and sentences makes it so easy to understand!!!!! THANK YOU!!!

  • dude... you helped a million!. and i laughed so hard at the end..

    amazing man"

  • thanks a million dude, really appreciate you simplifying it like you did :)

  • Thank you

  • yeah agree, best teacher ever.

  • thank you sos so much for making this

this is exacly what i was looking for

    best teacher on youtube ever!!!!!!

i want to start blues soloing

  • using the "words" and "alphabet" was such an awesome way to explain it. Was just so so helpful. Thanks man your a diamond ;)

  • I like the music type at about 1:30 the like ' Texas ' type i think the type you hear on movies where they show them in prison that type of texas type.

  • This blues lesson series is just so good =) You are a so good teacher, and on this first vid, you did not talk to much, as you where saying at the end. I rather think, that what you said was important information of the blues, and you said it so good. =)

  • I love your videos, but I hate the rat.

  • What? The rat rules!

  • Its not a rat, it's a tazmanian devil

  • that was the best explination about solos using the alphabet, words and sentence, really helped

  • Good lesson. I'll go try some stuff out.

  • your the best teacher ever

  • first licks = SATAN

  • Hey, listen. Justin is one of the best teachers on the net. So if you want to learn from him, shut up and listen. Learning how to play guitar isn't about learning a few licks.

  • @whitato1

I totally agree with you. Justin IS the best teacher on the net.

  • I just luv this guy, so sympathetic

I learn lots of guitars and much more about english language.

    thank you very very much!

    Great Job.

    Brazilian Hugs

  • i understand why we as players must learn other players licks and all...but why ??

why can we just sit down...and come up with our own....licks without ever listening to someone else....play...why must we, as humans have a knowledgeable background in music in order...to be "musicians" ???

  • I understand where you're coming from. But why not man? The more licks we know the more ammunition we have to bust out in jam sessions or in our own stuff lol We should definately come up with our own licks though. Peace

  • i guess..........

    thanks mate......

  • Cool way of explaining!

  • He's "teaching", not showing you how good he can play, heighten your common sense level then you should pick up a guitar.

  • Your videos are videos of overfloating awsomness

  • justin, dude iv olny been playin for ten months, and by watching your videos, i can improve blues now, thanks a lot man. your awesome.

  • Ha loved the vid, could you be more metaphorical?!

  • Poetry analogy! Classic

  • i can not help thinking that he looks like alan partridge

  • He is a very good in prior lessons videos. In this one on Blues lyics chatted a lot in this , But since many as I am new he takes some time to explain blues and the styles . A bit to long , but see how part 2 is of the blues .

  • all the strings nylon, cause when i dot classical it had 3 nylon and 3 steel????

  • what kind of strings u would use to a classical guitar???

  • nylon i'd say

  • Listen to what he says. You won't learn how to play the guitar just by watching step by step cover lessons. You need to start finding out stuff by yourself too.

  • wtf is with that wombat???

  • Justin's seems a great guy to me and he posts a lot of free stuff, so what if he sells some stuff, he's been really helpful to loads of people. Seems that he relies mainly on donations - help him out and donate - support his free stuff!

  • Dude you talk to much :D Cool vid.

  • every time i hear that taz devil's howl at the end, i think of the opening bent note to funk #49. lol

  • I have watched many of your vids and you are one of the reasons i have taken my soloing teqs in a level i could not even imagine :P And the trip continues ofc :) Thnx m8 keep it up

  • this guy is really good a teacher

  • holly jeeze, dude I never understood blues but now I finally understand how it works, and it MAKES SENSE, which is hard to find, so thank you

  • Thanks for all the stuff you do Justin, you help thousands of people around the world. If most people were like you, making things non-profit making (hope I've expressed this correctly) and helping the others for free, many problems (like the ones you talk about in your website) wouldn't exist.

Cheers from a spanish teenager who learns every day a little thanks to you!

  • What are you talking about... he sells product! Don't get me wrong... he give great advice for free but don't assume he's doing for the good of man kind....

  • Yes, but for example some of the products he sells are for free in the website. Ans he has more products for free than paying.

  • of course he's gonna sell stuff...he can't really make a living off free lessons on youtube...and no one has to buy anything, he's just giving people the option, and if people want to spend money on his dvds and stuff then thats their problem, not yours, so why dont you fuck right off

  • Why does every childish user on youtube have to resort to using profanity? I was just pointing out the fact that no one in this world does anything for free. Justin, thanks for all your free videos and tutorials. I have learned so much. Perhaps I was being flame bait with my comment.

  • im pretty sure i didnt vote anything down

but if no one does anything for free, then whats the point in commenting here to point that out?

but you should know that if your gonna post comments that sound like negative ones, your gonna get people mad, and your gonna get replies like mine

  • Yeah, you are right.

  • Comment removed

  • wow really inspiring! makes you want to pick up your axe and build your lick-vocabulary :)

  • 5 stars as always! your some man justan!!

  • You seem like a really humble nice guy. And you are a very natural teacher. 5 stars on being a top bloke basically! Good man

  • Couldn't agree more. the internet is great but learning by playing along with records makes you a better guitarist in the end. Don't wanna sound old but kids today really don't know how good they've got it, the stuff in some of these vids is gold.

  • wish he still did private lessons coz he would make a bomb outta me he teaching style just works i got lick libary dvds and i just find justin so easy to understand good job m8

  • Fantastic !

Amazing that you are able to put into words what so many have failed to do in the past.

    5 Star rating !

Good job, and most importantly.............Thank You

    SJRP

  • how are you contributing to music?

  • mariacultrock1 What a 15 year old cock!

  • Are You jealous??

  • Simple and quite brilliant.

What a great analogy... The blues vocabulary

    Scales = Alphabet

    Licks = Words

Blues = your own combination of the two with the addition of 'feeling' found by listening to your favorite players.

    Really well done, thanks Justin!

  • I get what you're saying man... don't worry about the haters lol.

  • HuH???.... what you fail to realize here is that this guy is teaching people the *alphabet* of the blues. It's up to YOU to say something with it.

YOU are the one who needs to go home to mummy and suckle some more.

His advice and tips are very very good. This is for those of us who do not have a great ear, and need to hear this type of teaching. Post up yer shit and let us jugde yer playing.

  • you talk to much lol no just kidding great thanks can't wait to look at the other lessons.

  • your awesome dude thank you so much.

  • Dude, you deserve to be made a saint. We really appreciate the effort you put into these videos. Your a legend.

  • this is such a great way of explaining it, im really hoping to get a dvd/book/whartever from you soon

  • lovely lessons!! cheers!! Gracias!!

  • thank you for sharring your knowledge...you expain things very well. I have just subscribed :)

  • Thank you for taking the effort to put these videos up. They are by far the best explanation of playing the blues that I have come across. Respect.

  • 8:52 ... EPIC ! (x-P)

  • Hey dude great lessons. I like the way that you explain the "language" of guitar playing. By far the easiest and most simple lesson i've ever seen on the tube. Thanks for the lessons and keep them coming!

  • that's it

  • Great lesson, I get my licks from just playing random notes of the minor pentatonic scale untill I find something that sounds cool though :)

  • Either that was sarcasm, or you're quite an idiot...

  • brilliant lesson!

  • nice guitar

  • thankx for the great lesson.

  • Very nice lesson!

  • lol you're just one of those ignorant fools who cant respect good music because of a stupid little bias, what do you know about music anyways, idiot?

  • YOU ROCK \m/ :D

  • i am sure that iamsillyyesiam's NAME gives everything about them away and that Justin is cool enough to let that worry him - he is, after all, a world class guitarist and we are here to learn from him (just wish i was in the UK to persuade him to teach me as a private student, lol) BUT, I have to wonder why people even bother putting rude negative comments on here ? Jesus - the guy is doing us all an IMMENSE favour here . Justin - carry on as you are man - I love your presentation.

  • onto lesson 2 :)

  • Most of the learning comes from listening, dont give the man a hard time, because he's given all of us very very pertinent info and alot of guitarists are gonna benefit greatly from it. I always think the same thing regarding listening and transcribing solos myself instead of just going and finding tabs for something, because you dont learn anything by tabs.

  • that was probably the best explanation of how scales translate to music i've ever heard, good work, keep making them i'll keep watching

  • cheers!

  • I listen to hendrix and old keaggy glass harp tricks

  • I've been trying my hand at blues playing for a while now but I never came across the 'speaking words' analogy before. Cheers for that, its really opened up possibilities.

  • This is great. This guy knows what he is talking about. Well explained.

  • damn that alphabet analogy is amazing, cant stop thinking about it.

  • Thanks Justin. Very good explanation of how to understand the Blues.
