So what you're saying is Uematsu used this module to compose the basis of the songs, and then used extra/other midi files to finish off the songs? If so, are there any other VCS's that go hand in hand with this module
I understand everything. General Midi is limited to 16 stock instruments including one shitty drum track on the Channel 10. With VSTs like Hypersonic 2, SapleTank, Rob Papen Predator etc. you can create much more complicated music. You can for example put 3 drum kits. You can use different loops, ethnic percussion, fully programable virtual analog synths and much, much more than any General MIDI module can handle. I don't say GM is bad. GM rocks but VST is 10 times better.
@mostlycrapreviews This MIDI just happens to have two percussion channels. Also, the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synthesizer allows for custom samples, so it's not too bad.
Everything you mention can be done on my Yamaha MU100R modules. Drum sounds are very editable, including velocity filtering, parametric EQ, multiple drum kits and a whole load more. I agree GM is very limited but the XG and GS exteneded forms of it are full on synths.
Don't get me wrong. Sound modules are great. I even have one in my "studio". I said that the GM standard is very limited and it doesn't have good selection of sounds.
Yep that is what I said. Actually I wasted ten years with PC plugins etc and found it all very frustrating and tedious, so I have returned back to my hardware setup. I certainly feel more creative as a musician with the older approach.
GM doesn't allow you to tweak sounds! You can only use stupid and pointless presets like Gunshot, Seashore or Charang Lead that sounds nothing like a real charango. It doesn't even sound like a fake charango!
I personally like working with samples. They're sometimes ever better than VST and General Midi combined.
There arn't enough Roland Sound Canvas videos on Youtube let alone SC-88 videos and general midi is obsolete, the Roland SC-88 can sound fantastic if used in a creative way, there are so many usable sounds, the Roland Sound Canvas should be brought back into the industry and general midi should be saved from extinction.
@Penguindog55 Part 1. Uhm,yeah.Especially in games for Sound Canvas, they sound great.BTW,Virtual Sound Canvas sounds like real one and because of that, real ones are getting rare
@xan1242 Part1 I have a real SC-88pro, plus I do also have virtual sound canvas, but most of the bread and butter sounds and drum kits in virtual sound canvas are from the SC-55 and some SC-88, most of the GS sounds and drumkits are from the SC-88, the real SC-88 has both SC-88 sounds and also all the SC-55 sounds,
@xan1242 Part 2 on most computers brought out within the last 10 years they come with something called microsoft midi synth, it's basically a general midi device that has samples from the sound canvas, mostly SC-55 sounds and some SC-88 sounds, microsoft midi synth is general midi only, it only has 128 instrument sounds ( mixture of mostly SC-55 but a few SC-88 ) and 6 ( SC-55 ) drum sets with a cut down sound pallette.
@xan1242 Yes that's the other draw back with microsoft midi synth, no effects, the sound is completly dry, microsoft midi synth is better than nothing ( no sound canvas ), I now only use virtual sound canvas as my default midi playback device, virtual sound canvas is also good for midi music in games, good for sketching ideas but I use the real sound canvas when I record.
I don't have virtual Sound Canvas anymore since I had to factory reset my PC, and now I have a real sound canvas I don't really need it, microsoft midi synth comes as standard and that's good enough for playing back midi files but for recording music the real Sound Canvas is better.
I had a SC-88 Pro, already sold it. It was good back there, but I enjoyed SC-55mkII and SC-88 a lot more, today those things are kinda toy. The good side is VST on PC.
Actually, your English is quite good, aside from a couple of minor slips in the last 2 sentences. :)
I can't believe Rei Harakami supposedly uses one of these to do all the crazy stuff he does.. I'd always heard he used a hard disc recorder (HDR). Maybe he uses both.
The best software wavetable I've ever heard, though, is Wingroove. though it hasn't been updated in years, it still is the best sounding software player.
I have an old SC-33 that I still enjoy very much. This is definitely a roland shop here.

I can't understand why vst replaced general midi, sound canvas has more sounds.

@mostlycrapreviews Well theres room for both hardware GM sound modules and or keyboards and VST plus other virtual instrument and sample technology.

To those who think this is disappointing, remember that this is only one MIDI file. This module can do better than that.
