@tonewheeler76 I've always criticised Americans for "over-applauding" - but these British stiffs were WAY too restrained! Jimmy was WORKING it out there - sometimes big whooping applause is JUSTIFIED!
@tonewheeler76 p.s. I just noticed your username - it seems you are an ORGAN man (no joke intended) - either a player or, like me - one who appreciates the instument - and the best exponents of same - like the late, great Jimmy.
@Melonhead622 yeah indeed I am an organ man :) I own a wonderful '62 Hammond C3 tied to two 147 Leslies. The Hammond organ is the sexiest instrument known to man imho. There's nothing like the real thing.
Can you purchase this video anywhere? If so, is this the whole video or only part of it? The only Jimmy Smith in '65 video I've ever seen was filmed in Paris. I've never seen this before! Thanks!
@MrMelodiousThunk (Love your username!) This was TXed on the BBC, so the only DVD source is likely to be THEM. If it's NOT available, you could download it from HERE, using a free downloader programme (Google "free YouTube downloader" and install it on your computer - Orbit works for me - but there are others) then convert it to DVD format using "Any Video Converter" (again, Google it - it's also free) - and (assuming your computer burns disks) you can then play this on your DVD player and TV.
@Melonhead622 They have started to re-issue all these BBC films what were done in the 60s when the Americans were passing through doing tours here and on the continents - Where you can buy them ! thats a quetion
I was lucky enough to see JS play twice in the UK; once at the Dominion Theatre in London circa 1978/9 (?) and then about 10 years ago at The Jazz Cafe in Camden.
Both times incredible. Had a C3 of my own at the time and just kept cribbing his tone bar settings.
@HighCrystal Apparently, a lot of guys unsuccessfully tried to ape the sound he got from his Hammond, but the SECRET was - NOT to clean its CONTACTS!!
@Melonhead622 Thanks for the long upload. Just to let you know I did the same thing after watching Jimmy perform. I went up on stage and stroked his Hammond.
You are so lucky to have seen him live, he would have been cooking! I've never seen or heard this 'BBC Session' before. I used to stroke my Hammond (X77) too but I sold it. Even though I had it cut into two & my father made two mad road cases for each piece, it was too heavy to keep carting around to gigs. I did keep its matching Leslie (L77) speaker though. Thanks for uploading this video.
@vanessamcqueen11 Leslie cabinets can be used for ALL sorts, apart from organs. Best to turn 'em ROUND though - so the audience can SEE the horns whizzing around!
the B3 organist in my old band told me he turned his Leslie around backward to accentuate the Doppler Effect of the rotating speaker; he said he wished the Leslie people would make the rear of the cab finished like the other sides so it would not look look so crude.

Seems to have been a bit too much for that poor white crowd back then.
Jimmy at his best once again. R.I.P. Jimmy!

What's the name of the guitarist in this clip, the one with the strat. :)
SavantSvant 1 month ago
Featuring Charles de Gaulle on guitar or was it Quentin Warren ?
FunkySkunk90 1 month ago
Not many jazz guitarists would play a strat, much less in the bridge pickup position...but it sounds good and not thin, like you would think.

Why can't I add this to my 'Like' videos and my 'Favourite' videos? I am trying to add it to my playlists because it's so cool but I'm being blocked.

@vanessamcqueen11 It's Not ME! YouTube has its faults - and I guess this is ANOTHER of 'em.
