Horses are running down a dirt hill into the water. It is a cultural event. I've watched this race in person countless times and I've never seen an injured animal.

This race is sick! It's dangerous to ride a horse rull speed down a hill, even one that isn't steep. They're not built for this, no horse is. I'd go there just to try and stop it. I'd fuckin' dig up the track with a bulldozer to stop them from doing this. It's awful and people are brainless to enjoy this!

Why don't you go and try running down a hill this steep at full speed with your body weight poised forward, then tell me it isn't cruel and it doesn't hurt them.

Of course there can be random missteps or accidents, so it's not something I would like to do. But I do understand your point.
It is dangerous for an unexperienced horse OR rider. Your teaching was on the safer side. However you've got to remember this used to happen on a daily basis, during wars, during raids, during simply..well...travel.

There is alot of history to that race. It is a Indian ritual.That is why they cant touch it. They have been running that race for hundreds of years.Many of those horses have ran that race year after year. They hold trials for that race to see who gets in. What you see during the rodeo is their "finals". 4 heats. 2 during the day and 2 at night under the lights. They bring in quite a bit of sand and dump it down that hill to give those horses a softer going.
Those horses also go through a vet check before each heat is ran and they have a top notch track vet do that vet check that does have, and will pull a horse from running if it is the slightest bit off. The indians hold those horses that will break over that hill and run down it alot of respect. It is or was held as a right to passage into manhood.
I can't believe the stupidity in this world. These poor horses.. If people want to throw themselves down a hill at full speed, I say "Go Nuts!" but those poor horses.. this is absolutely disgusting!
I would just love to let the riders have a taste of real riding. Where you dont use your horses trust, whip him, and plunge him down a huge hill at a full gallop, all the while riding on his sholders like a sack of potatos. I call this 1-Inbred humans (Explains the mental lack) and 2- BAD RIDING. Even for western riding this is horrid.....

Sometimes a horse just can't stop, you think it can stop on a hill like that? Don't think so? And horses always follow the group, they won't stop and stay behind alone. I think some of these horses just aren't treated very well and are forced to run down..
The world is a dangerous place, and this is a dangerous race. It's also one of the most incredible, amazing things I've ever seen in my life. I hope I have the chance to see it again soon.

Yes I have heard of that, and when you drive down the road do you think that you might die because a simi truck comes and crushes your car? I have been around horses all my life. Does a horse know that when he is running in the pasture that he might fall and break a leg or his neck? IF THE HORSES DIDNT WANT TO GO DOWN THE HILL THEY WOULDNT GO! I was at the top last year and watched the race from up there, and it was amazing! The horses were lunging forward and ready to go.

well, because of the fact most of the horses get injured, and some get killed? The riders can die if they get trampled on. The hill is far too steep for the horses to manage its like a human trying to run down an almost vertical hill, you couldnt do it. I just (in my honest opinion) its a death trap and not my idea of fun :S :S :S

The horses are doing this because they love what they are doing. If they didnt want to go down the hill then they wouldnt go down the hill. And yes they can see whats ahead of them. We put our horses out in the mountains in the summer and fall and when I was little my mom and dad had to put me on a mare of ours bareback with nothing on and she took me to the bottom. ( We were taking the horses home for the winter ) And I was just fine.

No they arent following commands of there owner. They are doing this because they love it. I was at the top of the hill this year during the race and those guys were using all of there energy trying to hold there horses back. So dont tell me that these horses are doing this just because they are following commands. And we put horses out it the mountains in the spring. And we take our horses down hills just as steep or steeper.
The horses want to do the race if they didn't they wouldn't do it. A horse that doesn't want to do the race will stop at the top. I've seen it happen. And a horse will finish the race without a rider. I've seen it done a ton of times. These horses are amazing animals and they do what they want on that hill, yes sometimes they do get hurt, but they could get hurt out on a trail ride too, does that mean we should not go out on a trail ride or allow them to run in a field? I dont think so.

horses train for this event, a well trained horse will (usually) do whats asked of it, theres nothin natural about a dressage canter plie, but horses still do it.I'm sure we can all guess what they'd do without a rider when the gun went off- find grass!We all have special bonds with our hroses n they trust us 2 no whats best, we get them past "killer" plastic bags & over jumps they dont think they can make - so r they running coz they think its safe or because they trust us to no whats safe?
They are doing it because they are having fun. I have went to this all my life an this was the first year that I went to the top of the hill to watch. An before they fire the gun they do a prayer an the honor song. An when they were doing that the horses were going nuts. An the night before that when they were doing the honor song they were lunging foward want to go down the hill. So the horses want to do it. They are not forced down the hill when the riders are obviously trying to hold them.

Actualy it is illegal. Some of the videos are for raited MA only, and that means not for children. When you sign up on YT you eter into a legaly binding contract saying that you are old enough to watch MA videos. But when you lie about your age you void the contract and canbe kicked off if they find out. Because they can be sued for alowing a minor to watch MA videos.

These horses are whipped, kicked, beat, and squeezed down this hill. Obviously, they know that they will be punished for not going down the hill, so they do it for /their owners/. Naturally, horses are very cautious, and would probably not do this. They are smart enough to do what's right.

If the horses did not want to go down the hill then they wouldnt go down the hill. An so if I am tapping my barrel horse on the butt to try to get him in the arena then I am "forcing" my horse to barrel race?
That horse probably saved his limbs and maybe his life. Maybe if you cooled down your hot head a little bit you could see just how bad an idea this race really is. Maybe you'd learn a little spelling and punctuation too.
Thats pretty horrible in my opinion. Who would want to enter their horse in a race where injury seems likely? It seems like a waste of money and a good horse.
Well then wny do we even ride horses. Because even walking your horse out in the pasture, they could get hurt. So you are taking a risk when you are doing anything with horses.
Sure, if you walk a horse in a pasture, injury is possible. But if you are leading correctly and have knowledge of horses this is a fairly small chance. And the chance of the animal dying is even smaller! Even in sports like showjumping, the chance of a death is small, as long as it is not overdone. The fact that someone would want to purposely put their horse in a race that could quite possibly result in the death of the horse and almost certainly injury is beyond me.
That's a fairly stupid comment. If you are riding and the horse doesn't want to pick up canter, you can still make the horse pick up canter. He won't enjoy it too much, but he'll do it with enough urging. Just because the horse doesn't want to do something doesn't mean you cannot get him to do it.
Actually, nobody knows the real stats on this sick race, because I doubt you rednecks would report the horses that you cart home then realise their legs are broken and shoot. And I gauruntee that if this race occured every weekend, like normal racing, the stats for this race would be a hell of a lot higher...did you even learn maths at school? sheesh.

This is horrible. Yeah Tercotte horses may die in a normal race but they arent being whipped down a 120 foot hill. And if you colville indians have been doing this for so long there must be something wrong with you guys. This is wrong and it needs to be stopped!
This is something I want to see for myself. Everyone says these horses are FORCED downhill, how do you FORCE a horse? It would be an awesome sight to see just a wild herd of horses run tackle that hill, granted they would probably be going much slower! I am just one to not believe things I hear, and interprete them for myself.

There is alot of history to that race. It is a Indian ritual.That is why they cant touch it. They have been running that race for hundreds of years.Many of those horses have ran that race year after year. They hold trials for that race to see who gets in. What you see during the rodeo is their "finals". 4 heats. 2 during the day and 2 at night under the lights. They bring in quite a bit of sand and dump it down that hill to give those horses a softer going.

Those horses also go through a vet check before each heat is ran and they have a top notch track vet do that vet check that does have, and will pull a horse from running if it is the slightest bit off. The indians hold those horses that will break over that hill and run down it alot of respect. It is or was held as a right to passage into manhood.

I would just love to let the riders have a taste of real riding. Where you dont use your horses trust, whip him, and plunge him down a huge hill at a full gallop, all the while riding on his sholders like a sack of potatos. I call this 1-Inbred humans (Explains the mental lack) and 2- BAD RIDING. Even for western riding this is horrid.....

Sometimes a horse just can't stop, you think it can stop on a hill like that? Don't think so? And horses always follow the group, they won't stop and stay behind alone. I think some of these horses just aren't treated very well and are forced to run down..

Yes I have heard of that, and when you drive down the road do you think that you might die because a simi truck comes and crushes your car? I have been around horses all my life. Does a horse know that when he is running in the pasture that he might fall and break a leg or his neck? IF THE HORSES DIDNT WANT TO GO DOWN THE HILL THEY WOULDNT GO! I was at the top last year and watched the race from up there, and it was amazing! The horses were lunging forward and ready to go.

well, because of the fact most of the horses get injured, and some get killed? The riders can die if they get trampled on. The hill is far too steep for the horses to manage its like a human trying to run down an almost vertical hill, you couldnt do it. I just (in my honest opinion) its a death trap and not my idea of fun :S :S :S

The horses are doing this because they love what they are doing. If they didnt want to go down the hill then they wouldnt go down the hill. And yes they can see whats ahead of them. We put our horses out in the mountains in the summer and fall and when I was little my mom and dad had to put me on a mare of ours bareback with nothing on and she took me to the bottom. ( We were taking the horses home for the winter ) And I was just fine.

No they arent following commands of there owner. They are doing this because they love it. I was at the top of the hill this year during the race and those guys were using all of there energy trying to hold there horses back. So dont tell me that these horses are doing this just because they are following commands. And we put horses out it the mountains in the spring. And we take our horses down hills just as steep or steeper.

The horses want to do the race if they didn't they wouldn't do it. A horse that doesn't want to do the race will stop at the top. I've seen it happen. And a horse will finish the race without a rider. I've seen it done a ton of times. These horses are amazing animals and they do what they want on that hill, yes sometimes they do get hurt, but they could get hurt out on a trail ride too, does that mean we should not go out on a trail ride or allow them to run in a field? I dont think so.

horses train for this event, a well trained horse will (usually) do whats asked of it, theres nothin natural about a dressage canter plie, but horses still do it.I'm sure we can all guess what they'd do without a rider when the gun went off- find grass!We all have special bonds with our hroses n they trust us 2 no whats best, we get them past "killer" plastic bags & over jumps they dont think they can make - so r they running coz they think its safe or because they trust us to no whats safe?

They are doing it because they are having fun. I have went to this all my life an this was the first year that I went to the top of the hill to watch. An before they fire the gun they do a prayer an the honor song. An when they were doing that the horses were going nuts. An the night before that when they were doing the honor song they were lunging foward want to go down the hill. So the horses want to do it. They are not forced down the hill when the riders are obviously trying to hold them.

Shut the hell up! I didnt hurt him the ground did. The ground sucked there! So dont blame me! He hurt himself going around the third barrel! I didnt know he was hurt till after I ran him! He had 4 weeks off! We took him to WSU to get him checked out to make sure he was going to be ok! So ya it sure sounds like I dont love my horses if I take them to the best vet around!

Actualy it is illegal. Some of the videos are for raited MA only, and that means not for children. When you sign up on YT you eter into a legaly binding contract saying that you are old enough to watch MA videos. These horses are whipped, kicked, beat, and squeezed down this hill. Obviously, they know that they will be punished for not going down the hill, so they do it for /their owners/. Naturally, horses are very cautious, and would probably not do this. They are smart enough to do what's right.

If the horses did not want to go down the hill then they wouldnt go down the hill. An so if I am tapping my barrel horse on the butt to try to get him in the arena then I am "forcing" my horse to barrel race?

Thats pretty horrible in my opinion. Who would want to enter their horse in a race where injury seems likely? It seems like a waste of money and a good horse.

Well then wny do we even ride horses. Because even walking your horse out in the pasture, they could get hurt. So you are taking a risk when you are doing anything with horses.

Sure, if you walk a horse in a pasture, injury is possible. But if you are leading correctly and have knowledge of horses this is a fairly small chance. And the chance of the animal dying is even smaller! Even in sports like showjumping, the chance of a death is small, as long as it is not overdone. The fact that someone would want to purposely put their horse in a race that could quite possibly result in the death of the horse and almost certainly injury is beyond me.

That's a fairly stupid comment. If you are riding and the horse doesn't want to pick up canter, you can still make the horse pick up canter. He won't enjoy it too much, but he'll do it with enough urging. Just because the horse doesn't want to do something doesn't mean you cannot get him to do it.

Actually, nobody knows the real stats on this sick race, because I doubt you rednecks would report the horses that you cart home then realise their legs are broken and shoot. And I gauruntee that if this race occured every weekend, like normal racing, the stats for this race would be a hell of a lot higher...did you even learn maths at school? sheesh.

I know I would hate it, having to run down a STEEP hill, getting my ass whipped, etc. Would you like it? But w/e, im done w/ you. the statistics for this race are lower than any other event we do with horses

This is horrible. Yeah Tercotte horses may die in a normal race but they arent being whipped down a 120 foot hill. And if you colville indians have been doing this for so long there must be something wrong with you guys. This is wrong and it needs to be stopped!

This is something I want to see for myself. Everyone says these horses are FORCED downhill, how do you FORCE a horse? It would be an awesome sight to see just a wild herd of horses run tackle that hill, granted they would probably be going much slower! I am just one to not believe things I hear, and interprete them for myself.
