I'm 5'10" and around 180lbs, I throw 40'+/-.... i use the spin technique, but can never fully get my hips closed when i plant before the throw. Anyone have tips on how I can learn to do so? I want to break my school record by the end of spring. the record is 49'3"...
@dark8121 thats terrible lol. these guys were probably throwing closer to 50 their freshman years. i threw 42 my freshman year, but theres not way i will be as good as these guys lol.
Great video, it really helps to break down their technique. Taylor really need to consider gliding or maybe find a great coach to teach him our to spin. From what i see, most of those throwers are stopping their momentum at some point during their rotation, either by kicking, jumping or just dropping once they land in their standing position.
Holy high leg, Nelson! I guess he really does bring his left leg high... if only he could get it to go a lower! But then again, who am I to criticize a man who's knocking 'em over 21m? Great video btw
Im 6'2 and ive been having trouble with my flight phase and right foot touchdown... This video has helped alot & its helped me continue to pivot on my right foot.! thank you
how can someone throw that far with his feet placed like dan taylor....tried the rotational shot put myself and had problems with the realease in such a postition :(
@Pudi1991 It's not as big of a deal as when the glide technique is used. Many of the top spin throwers in the world have their best throws when they have a very close stance and 'duck footed' stance.
@HPCsport But it is hard to see how Dan Taylor is able to get his hips around properly with the closed "duck footed" stance. Wouldn't such stance impede hip movement? It seems as if he is getting less hip into his finish than the other guys because he is too closed off. Do you think he would throw further if he fixed this?
@Jamac72 Plenty others land like that...the problem is when the foot doesn't rotate at all. It's possible (but more difficult) to get the hip around and leave the foot behind like Taylor but IMO the foot not rotating is more of a symptom (of doing things incorrectly out of the back of the ring) rather than a direct cause.
Sorr y I missed your other posts guess I should read all of the comments before opening my mouth. Yes, it would make sense that they can land with their foot to the back of the ring as long as they are still pivoting to the front. But try telling that to a high schooler who isn't completely paying attention to you and they get just as mixed up as I did. Anyways, Sorry about the mix up,
@COACHTRACYWHITTEN In my experience, HS throwers do best when you get them to focus on "screwing their right foot into the middle of the circle." The focus should be on TURNING the foot, not the angle at landing. In fact, any discussion of "landing" seems to cause a pause or breakdown at the landing!
If any of them would throw there free arm up and more tightly like they were about to elbow a giant in the face i think they would get a little bit more torque built up into there core and then they overall would be able to throw farther.
im in 8th grade and been in shot for 3 years and am ranked 3rd best shot putter in my state and im trying to perfect my spin. but as i take the 1st rotation my arm keeps swinging out away from my neck. does anyone have any tips to help me on this?
@mrfear15 you may be twisting your head towards the throw away from the shot. Notice these throwers keep their head looking straight back mainly on the first rotation.
so whats with all the fouls? Are we not seeing the athletes step out of the ring due to the video being cut off, or is it something else thats causing them to get so many fouls?
don't know why, but I don't like the way Taylor throws... his technique just doesn't look so fluent. But anyway... he's still great to throw 21+ meters
It looks like its in parts, that's why. And look at his weak hip drive. It's the worst worst worst. He throws like a ballerina. A 21+ meter plus ballerina, but still. Its just aggravating to watch. Ballet sucks.
This video is incredible. It's the best one out here for long term study.
In that vein, does anyone notice the angle of the put elbow at RFTD and how the elbow "opens up" during the short hop phase and how it relates to the quality of the put? And what's the importance of the way that the putting elbow moves as it swivels around the body at FFTD? Does a variation there have an impact?
I would assume so because putting the power into one path and then altering it would cause a "miss". Ideas?
i'm a glider, so i cant be sure but it seems that they dig it downwards in a 40ish degree angle and as they whip around it gets lifted into a 40ish degree angle. I can only guess its for height
Nelson has the best technique followed but hoffa and then taylor and then cantwell... throwing far is all about the torque and if nelson had a 660lb. bench press he'd throw 75 and hoffa is second best in my opinion becuz taylor gets bunched up at the toe board and that makes your legs ineffective and cantwell stands straight up and tries to bench it out and if he used his legs then there would be a 80 ft. world record
If you watch Cantwell he's just as low at the front of the ring as any of the other throwers. He just stands out of the back which is what technique works best for him. In the rotational style throw being low isn't as important either since it's based more on the rotational aspect of the throw. The glide generates more power from the legs and therefor the thrower needs to be lower in order to generate the power, but not so in the rotational.
also, a big part of Nelson's torque is the left arm he leaves behind for so long. the high left leg adds to the rubberband effect. I dont think he can "fix" that.
but doesnt the high left leg make nelson only use one leg to push off instead of 2? he explained his it in one of his videos where he was changing his technique
I don´t think that Cantwell is too massive for spin, I mean look at Mika Halvari.....if he can spin the way he did then there´s no man who is too massive for the spin i think.
But im not saying that Cantwell has bad technique....everyone has to find their own style and this is what workd for Mr. Cantwell.
I've examined all of the top American throwers of the past decade (as the USATF biomechanist for the SP) and none of them do). It's not an important aspect of technique.
@HPCsport who told you you were supposed to land with your foot facing the back of the circle. Your foot should land at a 90 degree angel to the toe board and then you pivot your foot and drive to the front of the ring....
@COACHTRACYWHITTEN Please re-read my comment. You're saying (almost) the opposite of what I wrote. I've done quantitative research on all the best American shot putters of the past decade and the positioning of the rear foot at touchdown is less important than most believe. Theoretically, it should land at about 90 degrees as you mentioned but there are plenty of 21+ meter throws where it does not and as long as rotation continues upon touchdown it's a non-issue.
