  • @shanna1950

    Dank je!

  • very cool technique and promotes patience too. keep up the excellent work and video's.

  • Adore this piece..

  • Hi Mariette,

No I didn't, it was white gesso.

  • Carla did you use black gesso as the first layer?

    Mariette xox

  • This is awesome, Carla! Like some of the others, I don't know that the waiting would be something I could do. LOL Sometime I hope you will show us how you were able to adhere this special paper to the canvas. Would you use gel medium?

  • You can use a strong glue, and may be gel medium, but I didn't try the medium myself. Bigger pieces like this one, most of the time I put them in a frame with glass in the front, do you understand what I mean?

  • Thank you, Carla! I really like this ... might have to try it this summer. Yes, I've seen beautiful work on paper under glass.

  • very interesting

  • Thank you.

  • Another fine instructional video. Thank you. I made paper many years ago and finally decided it's just too much work for me to stay with it. Patience isn't my strong suit. :D

  • I didn't do it myself for a couple of years ;)

But it has a nice texture (or should I say 'structure'?) and it has a great 'ancient' look.

  • I am wondering if the paper would dry much faster if you put it between something like window screens instead of wood? Could it be removed from between the wood before it was completely dry and just lay it flat to finish the drying process? I think weeks would try my patience. LOL!!! What did you use to waterproof the wood? Love the sticks, by the way.

  • Window screens instead of wood.. why not? I don't know. Give it a try!

Remove it before it's completely dry, yes, I do that often. Just lay it flat. But it wouldn't dry flat (bumpy), so at the end I sprinkle some water on it (plant spray) and put it again between the boards. It saves time to do it like this.

Waterproof the wood - in Dutch they call it 'waterproof triplex' I really don't know how I can describe it in English, you can also use 'baking paper' between the pulp and the board.

  • This is fabulous. I like this method of making paper much better than suspending the pulp in water and scooping it up. I would think it would much thicker...more substantial. You mentioned putting plaster of Paris on the back but have you ever tried adding a small amount to the pulp? It would be interesting to make a separate sun and dry it so it had a slight curve like a shallow bowl. It could then be stitched on. I do like the painting as is, though. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

  • No I never tried adding plaster of Paris to the pulp. But I can do that the next time! Good idea :)

  • love it as well, but it looks like alot of work...you make it seem easy...which I am sure it is not.

  • You're absolutely right about that. It isn't difficult to make, but it is a time-consuming project to do it, and you must remain patient.

  • Great video carla, its really easy to follow and I am definately going to have a go.

  • I'm really happy that other people from other countries can understand my video's.

  • Hey there! How are you doing? Thanks for sharing your talent with us. Hummm i want to give it a try, and if i do i'll let you know what my out come is! Take care and i loved the art by the way! Just loved it!

  • I'm fine, and how are you?

I would like it to know what you have made in future. Do you share it with us?

  • I love making my own paper! I like to add bits of dried flowers, especially tiny, tiny, petals. I have heard (but have never tried) that adding toilet paper (CLEAN T.P. people!! LOL)to the mix, acts as a binder and then you can omit the "glue" step. I also heard that it gives the paper a nice texture. Like I said, I certainly don't know that first-hand though. Have you ever tried it? Either way, I really enjoyed your video and art! Beautiful.

  • Hi Tracee,

If you make your own paper, do you do it the way I do? It's a kind of paper mache, isn't it? About toilet paper, I never tried, but it wouldn't surpise me. But I would not omit adding glue, because I think it isn't only a binder but also makes it more steady (or how do you say that.. more solid, more strong..)

To make this more & more strong ;) I sometimes add a layer of plaster (how do you call that 'plaster of Paris'?) on the backside, and then a layer of thick varnish.

  • love it...great idea ;)

  • Tnx :)
