An extraordinary scene and David Mamet is the best screenwriter in the last 30 years.
Charlotte Rampling's chastisement is ironic because she is an agent for the side that wants him to fail. Because his character is considered washed up and incapable of regaining his mojo, what better candidate to represent the plaintiff?
Yeah, you're right. A punch. I have mixed feelings about that scene. His anger is justified, but it seems a bit extreme. But I like how it's all about the look between them. No words until she says "Leave him alone."
@FigurinItOut I hate that scene. Yeah she was a real bitch for what she did but violence toward women is never justified short of actual self-defense. Yeah, that scene would never play out in today's cinema.
you think that more women would be o.k. with him hitting her later in the movie. He was defending a woman in his case, and she sabotaged it.

the transition....she begins to fall for him - he begins to put his demons behind him to win the case

MAN, Paul Newman is AWESOME in this movie!!! They could have given out two Best Actor Oscars in 1982!
Charlotte Rampling is unduly mean to him in this scene. He should have slapped her here, as well as later on.

Later on he straight punched her. They wouldn't let him do that these days but BOY did she have it coming!
