I think it's just about a guy going against the grain of society. It's an extreme example, but at the end, he turns, and literally goes against the crowd, in the direction he is going. He's the modern man, who can't take conformist society anymore.

Notice that keyboardist Tony Kaye is nowhere to be found in this video. He temporarily left the group during the recording of 90125 due to differences with producer Trevor Horn. So guitarist Trevor Rabin played the keyboard parts on this song instead. Kaye rejoined after the video was made.......that's why you only see Squire, Anderson, White and Rabin in the video.....

All the same, one of the best songs to come out of the 80's. I loved Jon Anderson's lyrics on this one.
