Ran across something similar tonight: I asked someone for their opinion on something, then decided to go a different direction... they threw a fit and said "You don't respect my opinion! You don't trust my judgement! You just don't listen to me." Hey, asking for your input is simply that - wanting to hear input. I'll still make my own decision in the end... Why so defensive?
In my opinion less hate and superiority would be nice. Reading comments about the current economy, shootings ect can really be a test. P.S. You look fabulous!
Exactly! I'm so tired of the moral crusader mentality that opinions are sacred things and to ever challenge or think less of one is reprehensible. Please. Challenging opinions is what's allowed society to grow. I'm willing to accept that there exist opinions that are more intelligent and insightful than mine, why can't others. Because they're too busy with their heads up their ass.
P.S. On a personal note. I just wanted to let you know that I don't come on here as often as I use to. But when I do I make sure to watch your vids. You really are one of the few who stayed true. You are yourself and that's a hard to find now a days.
@akfhome27 Thanks for that! And it's good to see you pop up here now and then. I'm not really around here with the consistency that I used to be either, so I can relate. Other things just push it down the priority list.
In these 4 years I can say with confidence that you have been the voice of the sanity, reason, humor and opinions that are, "fair and balance." I have enjoyed listening to you and your opinions, and more than not have sat here shaking my head in agreement. I hope to see you another 4 years! We need sanity more than ever.
people are entitled to their opinion, but you would hope that after debate and being shown new evidence, they would be willing to change theirs. Although of course this argument doesn't really apply to religion where people will often hold on to their belief regardless of any evidence to the contrary... but their reply will be "it's all about faith"
For one, I am happy you have been posting for four years. You have been thoughtful, entertaining, funny, challenging, cute, and a bit bizarre with your cat. I am glad to know you and your opinions. - roc
As sad as it is, I've taught myself to stop debating with others, even if I have all of the facts. Most of the people I encounter nowadays use that phrase as a crutch for their inability (or refusal) to go and research the information before blurting out any old thing.
Logic and facts trumped by mere opinions. Idiotic.
(This is SatuMitsumi, by the way! I know it's been a while, but I thought I'd let ya know! :D )
@Converse75 I can relate. There have been plenty of wacky biases that I didn't even realize I had (or that they were even wacky) until things were spelled out for me in just the right way. I also had to be open to taking that 'new information' in.
Grad school, eh? I'm envious, actually. Being a student is the best job I've ever had!
@tnew07 Morons rarely get it even when you spell it out as clearly as you possibly can. So, more than anything, I was probably just talking shit about them behind their back.
Can't facts be distorted? Can't evidence be open to interpretations? Not knowing the particulars of the discussion, I can be somewhat objective. (Although you're probably right and the other person is a jerk) I'm just throwing it out there that, facts are sometimes rabbit holes Alice.
For example, your statement at the end about the sun rising and setting and then correcting yourself and saying it's an illusion. Remember that in physics all motion is only measured relative to something else. So who's to say the Earth isn't still while the Universe revolves around us?
@audionautix A distorted fact isn't even worthy of being called a fact anymore; it's been turned into a lie and is therefor bullshit. As far as the details of science, I defer to the scientists on that. But that the earth revolves around the sun has been proven to be true (again, deferring to - and summarizing - what science has told us).
And, finally, if only there had been just one convo that sparked this. This is really only about the recurring brand of stubbornness I encounter and observe.
I had to continue mulling over the "facts are sometimes rabbit holes" part. My mind immediately jumped back to when we were assigned argumentative witing assignments in college. Using the facts to support an argument can SOOO be a mine field and I remember a handful of class discussions about this.
I dunno... if anything, all these crazy "debates" we observe in the news, etc., just make me grateful for the critical thinking course I was required to take.
The problem with opinions is – based on who’s they are, they may unduly influence. Despite merit or lack thereof. The only saving grace is – when someone utters those words – they pretty much admit evidentiary defeat. Well – at least that’s my opinion.
BTW – there has been a ton of value of you being here – and me getting to know you. And that’s a fact!! Happy Anniversary :)
Seriously, tho, I'd rather put stock in verifiable research than anything based on blind faith or a belief rooted in nothing more than the tradition of always having held said belief.
i so agree about how opinion is over riding fact these days and that is not opinion...it has no basis in logic. i always seem to agree with you...lol. we have to find something we don't agree on so we can have our first fight...ha ha ha...
The day after I posted this, I received a political flyer in the mail (one of hundreds that have been showing up lately). I forget who or what it was against or for, but in bold red letters across the middle of it, it read, "People are entitled to their opinions, but they aren't entitled to make up facts."
Man I love the photography... Four years, amazing. I am glad I found you on youtube, it's been a pleasure. That fact is based on experience :-) Cheers.
@NLPNVC Thanks. I've been watching a handful of things via Netflix that have helped inspire me to 'reach a little further' where my own video making is concerned. Hopefully that will transfer more into this stuff as time passes.
Glad I found your channel as well (if memory serves, I have Renetto to thank for that).
@OhCurt your welcome man you make a good point that most people don't think about I like when you said and I hope I'm remembering right when you said we're entitled to our informed opinion I really liked that because honestly if you give an opinion without being informed then it's not an opinion it's just something you made up but great work on the vid it was good
@OhCurt well, if we are going to talk about inanimate objects, most of which have higher IQ's than some people I know....I would have to agree. I love chocolate more, and french fries, and chips with fresh salsa and guac and queso.
I kind of go by a quote in a great book, "The Day No Pigs Would Die". It says, "Never miss an opportunity to keep your mouth shut." If it's just my opinion, unless someone specifically asks for it, who gives a poop?
@mikwid Good point. Even when people ask me for my opinion, I get uneasy. I never really know if they've unintentionally set a trap for both of us. lol
Coming home at night, turning the pc on, watching a video with you - talking about interesting stuff which inspires me to think about some things, seeing BEACH...
@ralfonzo83 since coming back to SoCal, I've really fallen back in love with this area (and that beach/marina) more than I expected to. So much here that I always took for granted and never even considered pointing the camera towards.
I can't take the credit for this, because I heard someone say it on the radio the other day. It's a quote from Harlan Ellison. "You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant."
Thanks for being one of the few people on here who isn't scared to make videos that are serious AND videos that are whimsical.
@BaubleRob I love that quote! Someone else shared that with me on Facebook the other day and I burst out laughing because it's so dead on.
And thanks for the compliment. If anything, I'd say that describes your contribution here as well. Even when you're being humorous, you inspire me to think.
@kenrg These first 4 years were kicked into motion in great part by what you had already started doing here. Hopefully you already know much I value that.
Auschwitz--Holocaust The lamp shades that were made of dead American servicemen were gruesome. The Nazis had selected specific parts of the male anatomy (the penis) to fashion shades from, and also of Americans who had tattoos. These were on display. I don't know if they still are. The people who deny the Holocaust happened are simply racist or anti-Semitic without a doubt.
You're right (how ironic). When I debate whatever it is to my friends, most of them end of that statement "I'm entitled to my opinion", and it's true that they are entitled to thier opinion, but most of the time it's on the sole fact that they know they're wrong or can see what i'm arguing and don't want to admit to being wrong. Of course there are other issues that can't be solved by a simple Opinion.Vs.Fact debate, like gay marriage or any human rights, but nevertheless.
Yeah, civil rights debates are the most bizarre to me. And I have to recognize my own bias here because to me it's just downright silly that we would even debate whether or not everyone should have equal rights and protections.
@timido66 If all things in the universe have a purpose, perhaps your dad's purpose (or at least one of his purposes) was to provide a contrast that helps emphasize the importance of fostering the ability to think for oneself.
This is more of a theory than an opinion, which probably means it isn't newsworthy.
I really get a lot of enjoyment out from your vids. You dare to touch on some heavy stuff and that is cool. As far as opinions go, the old saying, "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one" holds true, but many times opinions like assholes are full of shit.
@DoggBisket HA! And very few people seem to enjoy being told that their opinions OR their ass holes are full of shit. Go figure, right?
Thanks for the compliment, btw. I guess if I had shared the exact details of the conversation (and subsequent similar conversations) that inspired this, this comment section might have a more intense tone. But I'm glad I DIDN'T go there becase what it all helped me see is that what makes it all frustrating for me is THIS recurring theme.
The problem I generally find with people who state, "I'm entitled to my opinion", are usually entitling themselves to someone else's opinion that they've just picked up and ran with! If more people would educate themselves, and genuinely form their *own* opinions, the world would be a less bigoted and less mean-spirited place to hang around in.
Congrats on four years by the way, Curt! I hope we can expect at least another four years of cats, beaches, sunsets, and words from you that are either full of meaning or just downright silly! Us CurtfFans just lap you up like Abner with a saucer of milk!
@RobNorthampton Thanks, Rob! Anymore, I'm not sure what will spill out of my head and into my Sony Vegas editing software, but it's nice having the upload button here as an option and even inspiration.
And SO TRUE re: people who just sponge off other people for points of view. Mind if I copy and paste that into my own brain?
I must be getting old... I no longer address opinions based on lies, prejudice, ignorance, or bigotry... and I usually just tell the person that outright. It's like banging your head against a brick wall and about as productive. To even start the debate is to give credibility, or validity to their position. I do try to be kind and make it clear I am rejecting their thinking as not worthy of discussion and not them as a person.
@longhairred That's not an easy feat since a lot of people will take it as a personal shot regardless. And you're right, at least when hitting your head against a brick wall, it's an experience likely to end with unconsciousness. Arguing with a bigot does not offer such peaceful rewards.
@OhCurt LOL True! I guess they will always take it personally. At least this way I keep my serenity intact. If I'm going to get all hot and bothered I can think of more productive ways to channel the energy. =-) Maybe I'm just debated out...
Totally putting this on my profile page. Damn you. Stop making sense. I go to the end of the hall to clear my head. There's not much up there that needs to clear anyway.
@andymooseman Thank you, Andy. I'm humbled (and a bit gassy - but my morning coffee's to blame for that).
Had Copernicus had access to YouTube at the time, he would have been making rant videos against that wacky "Earth Is Flat" community. I picture them as relatively calm rants, however, punctuated more by witty jabs than loud scoldings.
Wow 4 years and here's to many more. Fact - I love this video. You express yourself so well it's hard to imagine you not swaying people but indeed bigots don't listen. I'm entitled to my opinion means I'm not interested in thinking this through or hearing facts. Joe and I use the agree to disagree thing when we meet an impasse. I do sometimes base my actions on a gut thing rather than fact too! Cheers, Lesley
Yeah, I'm very much a 'gut feeling' type of person too. Makes it a challenge to balance the intellectual stuff but fortunately my 'gut' leans more toward the scientific than just the blind faith approach.
As far as fact and opinion I've always believed that everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's only when they try to make their opinion a fact that I want to smack them. Or in some arguments it's when someone takes their personal beliefs and tries to base an anti-civil rights law upon their mere beliefs but then that's a whole separate issue. So what was the basis of your argument?
@kokohawk Actually, the argument that sparked this initially is now over 4 months old, so the minutia has thankfully washed from my brain, but at the center of it was a civil rights debate (i.e., the denial of certain rights based upon religious ideology). So, yeah... it wasn't fun. But it also wasn't anything new or original. And other "debates" since that one helped fuel the fire that gave birth to this video.
1st 4 years down and many more to come... right Curt?? Thank you for still posting after all this time. At one time I took for granted all of the people that I've come close to on here making videos but now I've found that only a small minority still make videos on here. So here's to you for sticking around and making this worth while, cheers.
Avon: "It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that irritates."
Blake's 7 (obscure British sci-fi series from the 1980s)
Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if they express that opinion, they must accept the consequences of doing so. If those consequences include being shown to be wrong, so be it. Anyone who cannot accept that forfeits their right to free speech... in my opinion, of course...
@rewboss The person who scripted that dialog is indeed wise.
I like!
and a big DITTO to that last part! People seem to think that the U.S. Constitution protects their right to grasp tightly to an opinion, when in fact it only protects the right to share it openly. It doesn't protect them from having people disagree or point out the holes in their theories or ideas.
@LeSaMilano Oscar Wilde would have loved to go upside that crazy woman's head in that comment thread! LOL
Actually, that Facebook silliness only helped inspire me to continue fleshing out my point here. Ugh, if only it were the only piece of inspiration...
Long Beach is both my hometown and, apparently, the center of my own gravitational pull. I didn't fully grasp that fact until I had spent 2 months up in NorCal.
I was an exchange student to Poland. Visited Auswitch. Anyone who wants to argue or deny or debate the Holocaust, bring them on. I was there just before Communism collapsed. We were forced to see a CCCP propaganda film. Showed horrible atrocities being committed by the Germans, and then informing the viewing group that we were helping to rearm and rebuild Germany. Curt, the memories of that film are sickening. Plus the rooms filled with possessions of Jewish people which they had kept.
@tahoemack The most bizarre and disturbing things to me still in all of that was using human skin for things like lamp shades. It's about the most extreme example of one group being dehumanized, literally and otherwise, that I've come in contact with.
I enjoyed this video OhCurt. Except for the few times you said, "I lied." Lying is with intent to deceive, which I don't think you did at all. I would never characterize you as a liar, just saying. :) I love living in California. Love the beach, too. Thanks for reminding me why...
Funny thing is facts can change, on laws of nature can not. The fact the sun is setting is nothing more than the earth rotating. This is a law of nature. Yet if the sun blows up that to would change. Regardless it is better to go with facts that are currently proved than ingnorant bias that can cause real damage. This is a lesson I learned in church, ironic eh?
Well said Curt. Far too often, strong opinions are not based on facts and thoughtful analysis but rather on hearsay and conspiracy laced emails. That's a beautiful place to think and clear your head. Your opinions are always well thought out reasonable so keep them coming. Beautiful video! -Jim
@CountryComesToTown Conspiracy theories sometimes have great entertainment value, and that's often the extent of it.
Thanks, Jim. Yeah, this area is great for going on walks and I lucked out on the day I took my camera that there weren't many people around. Typically there's a ton of foot traffic over by the marina.
I have only one conscious prejudice. It is toward people who are ignorant. Especially toward those who claim to educated. Your comments are always, by far, among my few favorite videos to watch,. Thanks.
@mtamorphis I was so mesmerized by the footage I forgot to give my opinion of this video. Anyway, to end an argument with that statement is clearly admittance that they got SCHOOLED! LOL!!
@Ranblv Large egos never do stow away easily in the overhead compartment, and they can even rattle the seat in front of you. Always smarter to check them before getting on the plane.
I can't tell if this is still a metaphor. Probably means I didn't drink enough coffee today!
It's those things that neither party (and perhaps no one) has facts for that causes the most diverse and sometimes aggressive opinions. Common sense and personal experience has to guide us. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to have been gifted with common sense and for those who lack it, experience tends to leave an invisible trail.
This is why I get nervous when someone asks me my opinion on something. I'm almost always wrong, having only half the facts I need to form an informed opinion.
So, I have a nice comfy spot on fences everywhere, which drives so many people so many ways of crazy.
Driving people a little bonkers can be fun. I agree!
And for what it's worth, I always flinch when people ask me my opinion too (with only a small handful of exceptions that include close friends). In most cases, I'd rather not even go there. Hardly ever worth the trouble.
@sukatra HA! Actually, the initial 'head butting' that inspired me to start constructing this one was less of a political whack job than a "spiritual" one. But there was an "Ground Zero Mosque" flame war and a debate with a self proclaimed staunce Republican that moved me to finally flesh this out.
Among other things I've seen here and there lately.
Hey dude, I said I liked pizza better than tacos.. move on...

@ralfonzo83 since coming back to SoCal, I've really fallen back in love with this area (and that beach/marina) more than I expected to. So much here that I always took for granted and never even considered pointing the camera towards.

@dramaticguy Thanks, Greg.
Yeah, that word 'but' pretty much negates everything that follows it, huh.

OhCurt 1 year ago
I can't take the credit for this, because I heard someone say it on the radio the other day. It's a quote from Harlan Ellison. "You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant."
Thanks for being one of the few people on here who isn't scared to make videos that are serious AND videos that are whimsical.
BaubleRob 1 year ago

It's a bold faced lie if they deny this.

A very logical argument and well stated.

OhCurt 1 year ago
You're right (how ironic). When I debate whatever it is to my friends, most of them end of that statement "I'm entitled to my opinion", and it's true that they are entitled to thier opinion, but most of the time it's on the sole fact that they know they're wrong or can see what i'm arguing and don't want to admit to being wrong. Of course there are other issues that can't be solved by a simple Opinion.Vs.Fact debate, like gay marriage or any human rights, but nevertheless.
Subscribed. ;D

@AdamOnlineXII Thanks!
Yeah, civil rights debates are the most bizarre to me. And I have to recognize my own bias here because to me it's just downright silly that we would even debate whether or not everyone should have equal rights and protections.
This felt like I digressed a bit. Not sure.
Thanks again. :-)

My dad always told us that we were entitled to our opinion and that it was wrong. And I wonder why my self esteem in low.
It seems to me that the news is comprised of mostly opinions these days. It's a sad state of affairs.
timido66 1 year ago
@timido66 If all things in the universe have a purpose, perhaps your dad's purpose (or at least one of his purposes) was to provide a contrast that helps emphasize the importance of fostering the ability to think for oneself.
This is more of a theory than an opinion, which probably means it isn't newsworthy.
OhCurt 1 year ago
I really get a lot of enjoyment out from your vids. You dare to touch on some heavy stuff and that is cool. As far as opinions go, the old saying, "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one" holds true, but many times opinions like assholes are full of shit.
DoggBisket 1 year ago
@DoggBisket HA! And very few people seem to enjoy being told that their opinions OR their ass holes are full of shit. Go figure, right?
Thanks for the compliment, btw. I guess if I had shared the exact details of the conversation (and subsequent similar conversations) that inspired this, this comment section might have a more intense tone. But I'm glad I DIDN'T go there becase what it all helped me see is that what makes it all frustrating for me is THIS recurring theme.
Oy.
OhCurt 1 year ago
The problem I generally find with people who state, "I'm entitled to my opinion", are usually entitling themselves to someone else's opinion that they've just picked up and ran with! If more people would educate themselves, and genuinely form their *own* opinions, the world would be a less bigoted and less mean-spirited place to hang around in.
RobNorthampton 1 year ago
Congrats on four years by the way, Curt! I hope we can expect at least another four years of cats, beaches, sunsets, and words from you that are either full of meaning or just downright silly! Us CurtfFans just lap you up like Abner with a saucer of milk!

OhCurt 1 year ago
4 years on YouTube! *Curt-sies*
I must be getting old... I no longer address opinions based on lies, prejudice, ignorance, or bigotry... and I usually just tell the person that outright. It's like banging your head against a brick wall and about as productive. To even start the debate is to give credibility, or validity to their position. I do try to be kind and make it clear I am rejecting their thinking as not worthy of discussion and not them as a person.
longhairred 1 year ago
@longhairred That's not an easy feat since a lot of people will take it as a personal shot regardless. And you're right, at least when hitting your head against a brick wall, it's an experience likely to end with unconsciousness. Arguing with a bigot does not offer such peaceful rewards.
OhCurt 1 year ago
@OhCurt LOL True! I guess they will always take it personally. At least this way I keep my serenity intact. If I'm going to get all hot and bothered I can think of more productive ways to channel the energy. =-) Maybe I'm just debated out...

Cheers, Lesley
flydarling 1 year ago
@flydarling Thanks, Lesley.
Yeah, I'm very much a 'gut feeling' type of person too. Makes it a challenge to balance the intellectual stuff but fortunately my 'gut' leans more toward the scientific than just the blind faith approach.
OhCurt 1 year ago
As far as fact and opinion I've always believed that everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's only when they try to make their opinion a fact that I want to smack them. Or in some arguments it's when someone takes their personal beliefs and tries to base an anti-civil rights law upon their mere beliefs but then that's a whole separate issue. So what was the basis of your argument?
kokohawk 1 year ago
@kokohawk Actually, the argument that sparked this initially is now over 4 months old, so the minutia has thankfully washed from my brain, but at the center of it was a civil rights debate (i.e., the denial of certain rights based upon religious ideology). So, yeah... it wasn't fun. But it also wasn't anything new or original. And other "debates" since that one helped fuel the fire that gave birth to this video.
OhCurt 1 year ago
1st 4 years down and many more to come... right Curt?? Thank you for still posting after all this time. At one time I took for granted all of the people that I've come close to on here making videos but now I've found that only a small minority still make videos on here. Vila: "Well, I'm entitled to my opinion."
Anyone who cannot accept that forfeits their right to free speech... in my opinion, of course...
rewboss 1 year ago
@rewboss The person who scripted that dialog is indeed wise.

and a big DITTO to that last part! People seem to think that the U.S. Constitution protects their right to grasp tightly to an opinion, when in fact it only protects the right to share it openly. It doesn't protect them from having people disagree or point out the holes in their theories or ideas.

Plus the rooms filled with possessions of Jewish people which they had kept.
tahoemack 1 year ago
@tahoemack The most bizarre and disturbing things to me still in all of that was using human skin for things like lamp shades. It's about the most extreme example of one group being dehumanized, literally and otherwise, that I've come in contact with.

This is a lesson I learned in church, ironic eh?
vmanvand 1 year ago
@vmanvand Sometimes irony can help enforce a lesson.

And good point about facts changing. Funny how some folks' opinions often wind up being less fluid... not sure if that's ironic or just plain goofy.
OhCurt 1 year ago
@OhCurt Personally I think its both.
