the streamers are not to keep it straight, they flap around in the wind that won't keep anything straight, the purpose of streamers is to create more air resistance to decrease the amount of speed in the fall from the instant stop, impact=mass x change in velocity (final v -initial v) so the smaller the change in the velocity the smaller the impact.
@NTCompetitive we put them there so that after the impact, it wouldn't just roll over on its side and crack the egg.. we weren't really worried with it coming back out, but it was behind the egg, or in front of the egg if you were looking at it from the opening of the cone.. if that makes any sense lol.. the egg was between the tip of the cone, and the straws (might make more sense phrased that way)
I haven't been on to comment in a while, glad it's helped so many people, and very glad to hear of the people who aren't failing a class now because of it :P.. Haha
any 1 need ANY help with this egg drop just let me know i did neerly exaxctly the same design and got first place in my class. its fairly easy to make and i made mine in 1 day then added extra designs 0_o haha yea very good p.s. add a weight at the bottom i.e. a couple marbles or something to keep it from tipping from side to side

I tried this exact design out and it worked. I had my doubts but it survived a one story fall. Tomorrow I will be testing it again but from the top of a three story building. Thanks a lot!
i am doing this same design before i saw this video, i have tested this design also and it works very well, i used some standard printing paper one 1 of them and i used a thicker piece of paper that worked well. the standard printing paper only used 2 pieces (paper and a small tab of tape) and only weighs 4-5 grams, the other one once again only used two parts and weighs 11-12 grams. hope this helps! ( i am using the MSE Egg Drop official rules, google it and you will find them)
omg thank u sooo much u just save my life... i have to do this as a final project tomorrow !!!. but the only think that change was that i can only use paper popsicles sticks and rubber bands no glue no tape but ur video help me soo much thanks :-D
thanks man, when i first showed my teacher she said " thats all u did ". After they dropped it i showed it to her and she said she was suprised. soo thanks alot i got an A
dude!! I made this thing in like five minutes and it works perfectly. i made some minor improvements to it too. at the base, where it crushes, i taped some straws that i cut down to size (4) and then put two napkins that i opened up and then crumpled lightly and placed them into the base. after doing so i dropped it from the peek of my house (about 25 - 30 feet high [maybe]) and it made like a small dent and it works like a charm. Thanks so much for the design! I get a 110 now on this project!!
this was rele awesome but what size paper did you use i have to do this project and its due tomorro (5/2) so plzz answer me bak befor nd if you dnt oh well ur project was still beast
@LautnerLover26 It was the standard 8.5 by 11; however you can probably try it with a larger cone.. It might be more effective with thicker paper also, but we just stuck with the standard. Good Luck!
Thanx for the video...my son's having an egg drop challenge at school tomorrow they will provide egg, balloon, strings, tape, carrier bag,A4sheet of card & 4 A4 pieces of paper but no straws & no streamers!
Any more ideas of what i could possibly do to make it successful?
if he were to take the sheets of card, and maybe roll them into tubes.. i know in one of my engineering classes we used 3 rolled up tubes of paper to hold up a few books and our teacher.. structurally, they are fairly strong.. streamers aren't necessary, but he might be able to make some out of tape or the strings.. they are just there to balance out the cone so it doesn't land on it's side, but he might not have the problem if he drops it straight and there is no wind.. good luck!
Basically you just roll a piece of paper into a cone and stick straws through it so that when it falls over it doesn't crack the egg. The tighter you roll it the more impact it will have, but will also fall faster so you just have to play around with it until you get it just right. And we ended up adding streamers to it in order for it to fall straight.
Um, the original song I believe is called "sanctificium..." I'm not too sure the artist (Lord of Trance?) but the song I used was titled "Tranceport" by Tiesto. I think though that it is a really popular remix, so just look for "Tranceport"
you may just get me an A aswell, i was thinking cones would do well, but i was thinking about combining it with liquids to distribute the force fo impact evenly, but it looks like this one doesn't have nearly any force on the egg, it goes through and the momentum is transfered to shaping the tip of the cone and bending the straws more than the egg. i'm going to do some tests on this first, but i think i might hijack part of this lol
what is the streamer for ?

heey uhm .. are the crosses of the straws in front and behind .. the egg or .. just .. the back so it doesn't come out? .

@manman3322 I have the cone part done but now how can I get the straws in & where do the streamers go? Ohh & wouldn't the marbles crack the egg?

Pradaprincessa 1 year ago
@Pradaprincessa
So when it falls on it's side it doesn't shatter the egg.. It's basically there just in case when it tips over on it's side.
