THIS IS NOT KARATE! A warning from a JKA life member: I spent a long time training and teaching this activity. Because of many contradictions I saw and heard, I began a study of karate from it’s beginning; what it really is, why it was developed, how it was taught, what it’s general syllabus was. Kata isn't just a bunch of useless moves. It contains all the elements of attack and defense, and is excellent for training and focusing the mind, as well as training in coordination, balance and movement. I have trained for years, and my kata is always useful in kumite, and it was even useful the one time I had to use it in a street situation. The old masters knew what they were doing.

Dans Gankaku, les yoko geris sont keage et non pas kekomi. Seul Nijushiho comprend des yoko geri kekomis.

Karate is a waste of time to learn, because when you see them fight, all you see is kicking and punching. All the fancy moves they do in the kata is not used. You might as well learn boxing for your arms, and ballet for your legs, because that's all we see when we see karate students, and their teachers fight in competition. Bottom line, if you what to fight like a karate master, then go to ballet classes and buy a punch bag, that way you will not waste your time on useless kata.

Kata isnt useless. It holds the moves used in armed and unarmed combat from days gone by.

Some of it is effective in this day and age.

Yes armed combat. It is one of things I find stupid when someone finds an unarmed use for armed combat moves.

my sensei always says that karate is based on kata...because if u do well kata u can do fine even kumite but u can be good @kumite and be weak in kata...i'm a 15 y.o. karateka and i've always did booth in my dojo and i'm good in booth thanks to this...

si en parte tienes razón. kata muchas veces es para combate de mano vacia contra armas antiguas, y como dices es absurdo ver como lo malinterpretan queriéndolo usar para movimientos ilógicos.

This is the world champion you idiots! and 'you wonder if he understands the bunkai'? in case you didnt know luca is also part of a kata team, which requires you to perform the bunkai to the kata demonstrated, and for your information, the team he is apart of, is also the World Champion Kata Team.

Idiots! The guy is world champion ffs! WKF rules state that variations are allowed as taught by the student's school. Timing is often varied so the kata is more aesthetically pleasing, but timing doesn't change what is still an effective technique. Of course he understands bunkai- if you watch him live you will see this.

Great kata! I completely aggree with you eawrestling. And I think many of those who commented need to learn their karate. There are different ways of doing a kata, all with slight variations like say a difference in speed. That's just the beauty about competition kata. Just use your brain: you are claiming that you know a kata better than an international karateka, a world champion. Idiots.

i wonder whether he knows the bunkai and is using kata to develope himself in karate, or whether he is making snappy noises and flashy movements to get noticed by the judges.

Definitely the latter and possibly the former. He's a very athletic and skillful guy who knows how to play the "WKF game".

Personally I don't like the way he flails his arms in between techniques (to get a nice "whoosh"), but his kata still looks fantastic and much better than mine!

...that's the problem with tournaments nowadays...a lot of crap! eawrestling and Goldenwrath don't have a clue about shotokan karate. It's those minute details that separate a "true/complete" karateka from crap. Not only did he perform the wrong kick, he has no understanding of the techniques (he knows the movements, but he does not understand them...there's a difference), that's why his rhythm is all screwed up.

OK, jumbing, I am sick of people like you who have to critisize little points about the kata. It does not matter if it is keage or kekomi. What really matters is the purpose behind the technique or for comepetetion kata, what makes you look the best. You just watched a world class kata and you pick fault at one thing.
