This election wouldn't have even been close if Gore ran a better campaign, and picked a better running mate, if he did those things, Gore would've won in a LANDSLIDE, preventing 8 miserable years of Bush/Cheney and 3 miserable years of Obama/Biden. I also belive the Democratic party as a whole fucked up, they could've taken back controll of both houses of congress in 2000 if they really tried.

It wasn't solely Bush policy that got us into this, it's been a long time coming as a result of previous legislation passed in Clinton's era; which is not to say that it's entirely Clinton's fault either, I'm simply saying that theirs plenty of blame to go around for either party, so the "parties" really aren't the issue. Things would have probably been worse had we gotten Gore, regardless, we'd still be in bad shape.

Thanks to Reagan, Japan was able to take over the steel, auto and electronic industries - which previously had been dominated by American products.
