When I started undergrad in 2004, my freshman seminar professor had us watch this movie. Having attended a liberal arts undergrad and a private university for a master in humanities, I think he should've prefaced this video by saying, "Welcome to higher education."
I thought it was pretty harmlessly stupid, but learning that some critics apparently champion this project is kind of annoying
[for all its "avant-garde" execution, it's just a convoluted and ultimately obtuse mash of sexual symbolism?]
it is an amusing encapsulation of much of 20th century intellectual movements which puts its highest value in moving beyond ("post") previous movements--throwing out everything old, good and bad alike
@jjbinks3 but, though these artists think they're "beyond" everything, they're really doing the same things as the ancients (symbolism, metaphor, &c.), just much less adroitly and without relevant insight
@jjbinks3 I think the principle problem with "intellectuals" in general, perhaps, is the whole "cultural movement" malarky bullshit-- the lack of objective thinking or thinking for oneself
but then I think a lot of theory/philosophy written nowadays isn't totally sincere but simply PhD's who don't know what to do but try to reinvent knowledge
I don't suppose there's a film award for being overrated and pretentious? Because I think we have a winner. What the fuck kind of moron would pay a hundred grand to watch this? Haven't they heard of Youtube Poop?
i think mathew barney is pretty much like richard d. james (aphex twin), both don't talk about their art, because creating is much more of matter than talking. no artist should be in charge to explain his or her art.
Mattew Barney is the lost, gay,(but in the closet, why else marry a pixie, and have such warped/ repressed/ perverted love for musical theatre), bastard son of Norman Finkelstein, (has anyone else noticed the creepy similarity?) Of course, in this case, the father is far more interesting than the son, and does far more important work.
I'm guessing the reason Barney hates talking about his work so much is because he can't quite figure out what the hell is supposed to be going on either. Join the freakin' club, mate...
I wish I could do crystal meth, pick up some hookers, and make them walk in circles. All the while I carve a statue of Abe Lincoln's beard out of butter. Oh and I'll have a wok on my head for protection.
this would probably make more sense if i saw cremaster 1 and 2 first.

No, Come to daddy is heaps better in terms of story consistency and digital effects. What you can see in cremaster? It is a sheer nonsense

What a super over-indulged, decadent fool.
