Did you actually read a quote from Lennon saying he didn't like the song? He wasn't anti-religion. He was a supporter of the church. After the break-up two of Lennon's songs, 'Imagine' and 'God' both make statements regarding religion and Jesus but, those don't necessily mean he was anti-religion.

Lennon was never really a virtuoso technical musician and was a below average bass player. Though, you've got to cut John some slack, as The Beatles hadn't really toured in years and he didn't exactly keep up with his musicianship as he did in the early days.
