Well, the truth is, in those days folks still had in their minds a sense of duty, a sense of hope that there is some logic or inspiration, perhaps honor in what they fought for, what their families endured and sacrificed. today, the best buy store has a 30 foot long 5' tall shelf of zombies, wars and violence that would make our grandfather puke at this disgusting display of indifference. this movie resonates with ow we should live. the crime: we show no respect, so why should the children.
@VonSeward This movie aspires to the best of our hopes, as people clinging to humanity in desperate times. It is an escape because those who had endured or the children of such parents, realize the hardships. Today, the teenagers and even their parents are irreverent, disrespectful; always seeking for attention or pity and claim they are entitled to it because THEY find life tough. This movie isn't for those people. It is for folks that have served, respect or are empathetic to our history.
@VonSeward this movie, gives a fireside peace and smile to us that warms ourselves to the humor, the energy of the classic dance and joy of singing, on any cold night, we are warmed by the embrace of these characters who, like the real characters, give so much of themselves to bring us happiness. They are icon that shall live forever in our hearts, and the hearts of our children, that brings a light to dark times, hope to bleakness and answers the question:
@VonSeward that to all who served and families who waited at home, there is honor and glory for all who gave some and the some who gave all. White Christmas is a sweet tribute to us all. Happy Holidays, Cheers and all the best!
@VonSeward This movie is about a ski resort in Vermont, where the German Von Trapp family lived after leaving Austria. The Von Trapps wanted to spread the German faith to America, instead of serving in the fighting force of The Third Reich.
@redfordforpresident I see that Daddy forgot to lock the door again, it is alright, I can see how "the sound of music" plays in your mind and somehow aligns with 'white christmas' because the most famous and respected men (even by the mafia standards) sung the praises to our American military....a movie about GI's returning home from their their duty in War. I guess in your head it didn't ring the same with the movie "Patton?!" I guess you just like dancing and singing..did you ever serve?
This part and the end always makes me cry, makes me think of and miss my grandfathers who fought in WW2, and I watch my own father, a vet of Vietnam, tear up and smile when he watches it, no doubt thinking of his father. T_T Love this film.
Music of today sucks compares to music from the past. Seriously. This song is 1000000000x better than anything by Eminem or Lady Gaga or the stupid stuff that's passed as "music" these days. It's far superior to all that hipster garbage, too. I adore movies like this and I adore songs like this.
I've seen my dad well-up twice in my life. One of the times was at the end of the movie when the general was surprised with all his ex-troops. I love the words, and truly think I was maybe born in the wrong generation. . . but I'm glad my dad served as a bomb aimer on Lancasters in WWII. Thanks to dad, and all vets.
yay! no dislikes! thanks for having taste in music you guys :) God bless all the troops overseas who are fighting for our safety; may you have a very merry christmas <3
@konkelmatt Unfortunately I'm afraid to say there was never a soundtrack made. I'm sure you can buy some fo the other songs on other albums on Itunes, but all the versions with the girls have a different girl singer than Rosemary Clooney, because she signed a contract saying she couldn't make an album of this. It stinks really. I love these songs!
i live in Seattle and sadly we get rainy Christmas'. But I always think of the days growing up in Chicago and having feet of snow for miles and miles. This song was a staple in the house. Grandpa in WW2 dad in Vietnam, me desert Storm and the 2 now. Rangers Lead the Way. I Am the Infantry "FOLLOW ME!"
This is the consumate soldier song. It says everything the soldier feels about the leaders he loves. And it is a tribute, in a way, to those brave men and women who protect our country today.
I'm gonna sing this to my CO. Hahaha!

Happy Memorial Day. God bless you soldiers everywhere. You do the job many of us are afraid to do.
asgards3 1 year ago 6
With the grandest son of a soldier of them all!
If you're fighting for freedom,
God bless you.
I don't care whether you're American or not,
or if the war you're fighting is controversial,
I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Because in the big scheme of things,
there is no one greater than someone willing to put their life on the line to save others.

I love this movie. I especially love this song. One of the best of Irving Berlin.
I think I prefer Holiday Inn, but I don't know why.
Anyway, I salute you all Generals of the Army. This song is dedicated to all of you, missed by the privates and everyone else--or not missed.
