I think the point of the soda tax might be to cut down on the eventual health problems obesity causes, thus saving everyone money on health insurance. I'm not sure on this, but soda seems to be worse for health than cookies, cakes, popcorn, etc. as far as obesity goes, so that's probably why they targeted it. I'm not seeing how this is much different from cigarette taxes.
