As I understand it, different broods emerge at different intervals (some are 13 yrs). There is some brood or another emerging every year. Those who study these animals know when particularly large broods are due.

Cicadas are the fabric of summertime in Dallas, Texas, where I grew up. Watching them emerge and collecting their shells gave us much joy. Last year I was in Ueno Park in Tokyo and enjoyed the Cicada's song. I collected Cicada shells there to add to my collection. The Japanese Cicadas leave shells that are lighter in color and a little smaller than those in Texas. Thanks for posting this.
