My favorite all time classic Si-fi thriller. The special effects were great...the dollhouse scene where the cat tries to get him and in the basement where he faces all obstacles, especially the spider. Great ending too! Love this movie. I want to buy the DVD of it...this original or a UTube version. Any suggestions?
one of my most favourite films of all time that i am always re-watching because there are so many great moments. and yes, i really love the ending too. "I STILL EXIST!"
One of the best SF films ever. Not just a special effects movie, but also about man's place in the universe. The smaller Scott becomes physically, the bigger a man he becomes emotionally and spiritually. The last two minutes are some of the deepest in film history. So much better than if he grew back to normal size and went back to his shallow suburban life. I'm glad the film-makers stuck to their guns and kept it in.
I used to think the ending was sad, but really it's brilliant! He learned to rule his world by surviving and killing the spider. When he escaped from the basement, he accepted what he was and realized that no matter what, we still mean something. We are much smaller than a redwood or a mountain, but that doesn't make us less important. It really is an excellent movie!
I and the SciFi community agree with you hulkout666. This is a brilliant film and in fact is the film by which all others in it's genera are measured. The film goes beyond survival but man's/women's place in the infinite cosmos. To quote a biblical passage that reflects this sentiment, "What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? "
Man, this really is one of the greatest movies of all time-despite the fact that it has one of the saddest endings in the history of film. If they did remake it, even w/ todays special fx, I still don't think they could recreate the elements which made this film great-great acting and screen play!
I agree that this is one of greatest movies of all time, but I actually don't find the ending sad. There's a bittersweetness to it for sure, but I think Scott ultimately emerges triumphant. It's incredibly moving.
I know many people are looking forward to a remake. Personally, I think remakes of classic movies are like Elvis inpersonators. No matter how good they are, they are still not Elvis.
Yes the ending speach in this on below, just copy and paste it onto your youtube browser.
By the way I am looking for the bit where he is in the flooded celler and his wife and her brother are looking for him he and he is shouting like mad but they don't hear him.
Anyway the title of the ending clip is below.
It is the spider clip but the ending scene is there too.
I first saw this as a very young child in the 60's, and it stunned me - I figured there would be a happy ending (his wife and brother would find him, the shrinking would reverse), but instead the ending was metaphysical and ambiguous, but still sad.

The movie was a metaphor for life then death. Youth, then shrinking to old age then death. "To God, there is no zero" In other words how can death be worse than before you were born? To have lived means you are God himself..
This is actually a great, thought-provoking movie. The last scene is perhaps the greatest bit of philosophy ever caught on film. Thanks for posting the trailer.

The cleverest scene is where he suddenly appears normal size until you discover that he is actually living in a doll's house!

They're doing a remake based on the life of former President George W Bush. The movie will be titled, "The Incredible Shirinking Brain."
