Copy every lick from Freddie King or Robert Johnson and you could be the next Eric Clapton or Peter Green. This is a joke. He does a poor job with the 6th run, it is over practiced and not his own stuff.
@naabjr - yeah, no-one has ever copied other people's licks in the Blues right ?
Are you serious.
Peter Green has played plenty of great original stuff, and he's always admitted he learnt from others.. but he plays it in his own distinctive way like all the great Blues players.
this version is the damage, it is so damagin it makes jeff beck look like achild who has wandered into the cinema half way thru a movie and wants to know what is going on!lol rolf, in all seriousness green is the damage, he just knocks every lick down, his blues are the real deal no rebuttles you know it be true
As well as he plays on this tune, his slow minor blues just do it for me. Check out Peter Green playing on 'love that burns', 'out of reach' and 'got a good mind to give up living'.
On Becks level there's Slash and Jimmy Page etc if you look up to the next level you can see clapton, srv, pete townsend etc then if you look up one more level you get bb king, buddy guy, rory gallagher and our very own greeny... All of them are great guitarist but they're on different levels of greatness... If rory stands on bb kings shoulders then buddy guy stands on rory's shoulders then greeny get's on the top of buddy guys shoulders he might just be able to kiss Hendrix's boots...
I just love this version, perhaps the best after Freddy himself. I do play a humble version of this tune myself which you can find by punching in: The Stumble - John Berry. But please gentle with me!! Thanks.
I just listened to a few of Jeff Beck's. While both are great, I can't dismiss the sound of Peter Green. Yardbirds vs. Bluesbreakers/Fleetwood Mac. They're both great but Green has a great sound with his '59 Gibson Les Paul. It's a sound that's never been reproduced. It's simple and awesome. Unassuming but riveting. That is classic Peter Green.

i dunno, jeff beck's version is probably the best version of the stumble ever recorded. You can disagree and call him too much of an over achiever, but listen to his right after this one. it's on youtube. His really does beat this green's up.
@johngoo343 Sorry my friend, but Jeff's version is no near as crisp and PG's version...and the tone is no where close to comparable. Nope. He really beats up jeff on this one.
@johngoo343 So sorry my friend, but Jeff's version is no near as crisp as PG's version...and beck's tone is no where close to comparable to Peter Green's. Nope. He really beats up jeff on this one without a doubt.
@johngoo343 hey guys the gary moore version at montreaux is pretty bangin, i'd say its one of the most pounding versions god rest his rockin soul, check it out!
@johngoo343 I dunno... In my opinion, the Gary Moore version blows everybody out of the water. He just ATTACKS the song; it's like a force of nature. That said, Peter Green does quite a good job here.
@johngoo343 Firstly: fuck you. Beck's tone and phrasing are not even close to Green's. Green is a thousand times better. Secondly: just how is one "Too much of an overachiever"? Being an overachiever already implies too much, you absolute cretin. Thirdly; Green has "Achieved" much more as he is... how do I put it... a much better guitarist! He plays with soul, meaning and tastefulness.
@johngoo343 You know nothing about guitar playing or about music. Perhaps a tragic accident would put the universe in better perspective for you. You are currently caught up in fakery. Go away and learn the art of music. Study Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Robert Johnson, Skip James, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Leonard Cohen, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green, John Martyn, The Doors and Wes Montgomery. They are some of the greatest musicians in history.
@benroo89 I encourage you then to watch my video 26 best blues and jazz guitarists, It's a list that I made of my favorite from both genre's, and would you look at that, on that list is included some of the names that you mentioned in your previous post. Wow!
@johngoo343 I will watch your video. However, it doesn't matter what you say. You are wrong in thinking that Jeff Beck's version of The Stumble is better than Peter Green's. The most important things here are phrasing, tone and expression. I think you need to listen to this version a few more times. In fact, try learning to play it on guitar. You will realise how amazing it is then.
@benroo89 I can play it on guitar, pretty easy without even getting tabs. I will agree that the phrasing is a bit tricky at first. Next someone's going to comment "it doesn't matter whose better just enjoy the music blah blah blah", but as a fan of the song, mostly just Freddy Kings version, I have a critical approach to think Beck's is better. Beck made the song his own, while Green basically played more to the rawness of the original. That's why I enjoy Becks, because it's his own vision .
@johngoo343 Well, I must respectfully disagree. Peter Green's version is more faithful to Freddie King than Beck. And this version is almost note for note the same as Clapton's version with Mayall. When Gary Moore got his hands on this song, he played the BALLS off it! I can't possibly see how you do not acknowledge that. But hey, your opinion is every bit as valid as mine. Just different.
Did Eric Clapton ever record "The Stumble" or any other Peter Green covers? I'd love to hear Clapton's version of "The Stumble". Please help me search.
very nice for sure . jack white owes a lot to bloomy, and stevie ray owes a bunch to the greengods smooth as butter feel that is still unmatched today i think
@friendofsyd To you and all other Peter Green fans, thanks for keeping the flame burning. I heard his name for the first time this morning, and it's been an all day research project in forums, and here at youtube. He's awesome! Great tone, great phrasing, great voice. Peace to all friends of Syd, Greenie, and those who have cracked.
@flugplatz21 Damn , nice touch, i'm glad you found this brilliantly aloof legend, i actually found this accidentally about a year ago , and then i remembered him as the writer of green manalishi , and then i did the same thing you did , and found out his fans are about as sweet as his playing, if i could be one musician , it would be this guy , killer vocals and we all know the rest. peace from flagstaff arizona
I really like King's original (he wrote it), and for sure, he influenced many of the guitarists that everyone loves obviously including Green. I saw King twice live and he was outstanding. Nevertheless, I like Green's Stumble the best because it is just so stinging it just digs deeper. Bloomfield happens to be my favorite guitarist ever and I think he was the world's greatest from 1965-68. Until Hendrix came along, Bloomfield was the most creative too. Well there is Buddy Guy there also....
Brilliant. What tone and phrasing! Peter Green at this best. There is a live version of The Stumble from 1967 that is very hard to get your hands on. It is absolutely one of the best solos I have ever heard by anyone. About 8 minutes of creative intensity by Peter.
PG is the best! I just recently got this on CD, and this song blew me away. Any time a guitarist can make you shake your head, you know he's doing something special.
You guys think that Joe Bonamassa could do this as well as Green.
I think-so
