I completely agree about the solo. The first time I ever heard this song on the radio I was really lucky that they had the guts to play the complete version and not the cut back one. The solo has so much passion and abandon that the gentleness at the end of the song makes little sense without it.

My god, hearing this song brings back such beautiful memories from my childhood of driving with my father, my hero, in his truck. He had the one Blue Rodeo cd that he played so often that he actually wore it out. I used to grumble cuz I wanted to listen dance mix '94, lol. When I got old enough to work I saved up and bought my parents concert tickets to Blue Rodeo one year for Cristmas. My dad actually teared up when I gave him that gift. It was a beautiful moment. I love this song.

Jeez....the solo needs to be there. Listen to the 4 minute commercial version. Not the same. These guys have proven themselves a thousand times over as professional artists, so the solo is on purpose. Once in awhile in life, you'll come across things that are perfectly wrong......this is one of them.

Does it not occur to you that professional musicians could have recorded another take, or brought in a session guitarist if they wanted it to sound like Yngwie Malmsteen? The solo is as they wanted it, becaue it expresses the manic desperation of the love written about in the song. It is perfect because it is so imperfect. It is a haunting solo, that starts and ends gently, but explodes in the middle.

I'm sorry but if you listen from 5:24 on, the pinch harmonics are muffled, the timing goes out a lot and too agresive for the vibe of the song. Even my family and friends agree that it's lame soloing. The song and lyrics are not bad though. I appologize again if I've hit a sore spot with fans of this song, I was just kinda amazed at the delivery of the solo, it surprised me that a big band such as these guys kept it in the studio. If you like it though then,..I guess thats all that matters?

The solo isn't perfect, and that's why it's perfect for the song. Everytime I hear it I melt into the song, it's just filled with so much pain. With every note you can feel the song, and that's why it fits. It's not a soft as the rest of the song, but all that's doing is building tension.

The guitar solo that starts at 4:29 is one of the worst guitar solos I have ever heard!, and I can say this cause I play guitar, bass and drums. That is just plain ol' bad playin'!. This band is entry level. Don't be mad, music is math and this is not a complex mathematical equation. Its entry level musical math. The solo is bad playing and has even been removed from some radio edits for that reason. I did not imply that non musicians can not have an opinion, but you have to have some knowledge of music to be able to judge its complexity and level of talent. Neil young is also not very good at guitar,(he writes well) he uses mostly open chordings and overbends the strings and hits off key pitches, which sound bad to anyone who has a musical ear. Get all offended if you want, but the solo is still sad.

I agree with radixbloom, it is good to that /those people. I like blue rodeo but everytime I hear this version I cringe at the solo. I am not musically inclined, but when I hear this solo I feel embarrassed for the guitarist because of the sour notes. I've read this whole arguement between you and radixbloom and what he is saying makes perfect sense to me. yes music is about feeling but you still need to "blend feeling with theory" as radixbloom says, or the feeling for lots of listeners is lost

He does use theory, he just goes outside of it a bit. You either like the way the solo sounds or you don't, it was played that way intentionally, not because it was the best he could play it. Classical music fans probably see a genre like jazz the same way you see how Blue Rodeo plays this solo.
