Quick question: I keep hearing that the strop needs to be super tightly pulled, which you do not seem to be doing. Or am I wrong about just how tight the strop has to be? I've been putting the strop on a table just to be sure...
Pro-tip: In this era of heavy feminism, be sure that when doing anything ultra-masculine such as straight razor shaving, to balance out by wearing your ultra-feminine World of Warcraft level 5 mage robe.
A few observations. First, how much pressure are you using, or is it done just by the feel of the strip against the blade? Also, are you looking for a change on the blade, or are you just counting a certain amount of strokes on each side? Otherwise, you have an excellent video of proper technique. Thank you.
'Never had razor burn from a Gillette Series, Mach, or Turbo product. Had 1 electric which was a waste of money. I'm curious to try a straight razor soon.
@ALNEAL There are 2 methods of sharpening. Using a stone removes metal from the edge, refining it. Stropping with leather refines even further by lining up the particles of metal at the edge of the blade. Most razors are kept so sharp they will never see a stone (plus they're usually convex edged and should be sharpened on a loaded strop (leather strop with abrasive compounds applied)) So really leather stropping just pefectly alligns the edge for a comfortable shave.
@5eraph1m Id rather get a nick or two on my nuckles and get it in my head to be safe than to continue using your modern razors. One or two nicks on the knuckles are a fair trade for the constant burning one can feel on their face
@Rancor16 the blunt side is moving towards his hand the entire time you are pulling back first so when he moves towards his hard he cant get cut. he could somehow cut his hand when flipping it over but he does that when he stops.
the motion he is doing he shouldnt be able to cut him self
Looks like a cool strop. What kind is it and where did you get it?

What exactly does leather stropping do?

@310shadow310
Leather stropping pulls a sharply honed edge out. It makes for a better shave.

Thanks. These videos are helpful. I just got my straight blade. Without videos like this, I would have no idea about honing and stropping...

I've never understood how leather can sharpen steel. Any ideas from anyone out there.

I hate to be a negative nancy, but it looks like the strop sans handle is a great way to cut the bejesus out of yourself

@Rancor16 well, if that seems a bit too perilous for your liking, there are safer alternatives available from Gillette and Norelco!
