The machine gun fail is funny - sure - but there's a reason:

You can't shoot blanks too close to someone or you may seriously injure them.

The scene was most likely composed in that way - with him shooting frantically beyond the camera - to evoke the sense that he was being surrounded - but not risk hurting someone.

Although the gore was a little disturbing (not too many movies at this time were as gory), but I found it pretty damn funny, which I think Romero was shooting for. 1. The first guy had a perfectly good chance of getting up and running away but oh no...

2. The second guy tried to take his blood pressure early on but one of his mates had to get him out of the way when Stephen began firing at them. Why he'd attempt to do it when his mates were being ripped to shreds feet away is stupid. Maybe he was a heart patient? Perhaps he was having a nervous breakdown? You should have put in the bit where it comes out as 0.

3 Blood pressure guy Some peeps are just dumb. These peeps can have EXTRA dumb moments. He rushing about last 10 mins with his raiding buddies. Fixated on getting his blood pressure tested(and vision obscured by dummy,sombrero and booth wall) He was in "y i know there's zombies all over, but im in blinkered raiding mode"

that said, i would o had the zombies a few paces further back & maybe a buddy walk by and blow away a couple of the nearest zombies.-so feelssafe

2 stumble attack. At first glance it looks very hammy. But he was scared, running up a lumpy hill towards a zombie who was stumbling downwards. TRY swinging a lump hammer at someones head as you run up hill, you may well swing low...and half realizing this mid swing he tried to follow thru with and turn it into a sideswipe....zombie away from me = good

that said id been tempted to reshoot this clip. Fly boy always had more enthusiasm than talent ref fighting

1 machine gun guy had been shot off the back of a motorcycle, wounded and stunned he reached for his gun asap & started an arc of fire without hesitating to stand up. all that is missing from the scene is a zombie or two falling dead towards him past the camera. He fired at what he saw in (in front first) , the zombies behind him where almost on top of him anyway, he wasn't quite so aware how close they where but he knew instinctively he was surrounded..out of time
