the greatful dead is very good jack straw is the best song the music today sucks balls it has no real insterments. live long jerry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bucking the overall trend here, I know, but I gotta agree with tj on this one -- I am not a huge fan of Donna's, but I do appreciate a lot of what she brought to the band. I could have done without all the screaming in the middle of PITB and GSET and she was off key more than any professional singer should be, but she added a beautiful and distinctive quality to songs like TMNS, Scarlet, Cassidy and yes, even Jack Straw. All in all, she brought more to the band than she detracted from it.
I don't like Donna overall but i don't think she's the devil like some do. Her vocals add something to some songs like Music Never Stopped, Good Lovin, and some others. I don't mind her voice in the background of Jack straw.
i really like some versions of Sunrise too. For what it's worth :)
Basically, Jerry's microphone was not working here, so everybody snaps on Donna? That makes no sense. Donna Jean Godchaux is a talented singer that sometimes had trouble hearing herself on stage with the Grateful Dead and that led to her sometimes being off key. But for the most part she sang on key and added a wonderful dimension to the band and there is nothing wrong with her performance here. The Music Never Stopped never was the same after she and Keith left the band. Donna we love you.
its too bad donna was with the band through their best performing years in the later 70's. i do like sunrise tho, unlike most. not sure why but its a good song
@TheEhce Not sure if you just phrased this strangely - but Jack Straw eventually became a regular show opener. So it might have been rare "back then" but not "even back then."
bigtex9265 nice call i goofed i meant to say wolf. What a beautiful axe. My favorite tone of any guitar ever. Sounds like Keith sometimes played a rhodes.
Sure miss these guys from this era. Smaller shows, mellow parking lot scene, no worries. GREAT MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@bobdylande for sure, i think wolf was definitely one of my favorite jerry-guitars. I wish i would've been around to see the dead, i guess not all of us are that lucky though
Hey now ribstikr, Could'nt agree with you more! I can't fathom why so many people thought she was great.I was there when keith and her joined the band. It used to make me cringe in disgust when she was so off key on many of the songs. I'm surprised the Dead put up with it for sooooooo loooooong...
anybody know the name of the keyboard that keith used in the late 70s? not the piano of course, whatever the electric one is. to me it sounds like something between an organ and a wurlitzer.
this song is a bad example since keith is using the regular piano.
Bob's Ibanez sounds sweet especially compared to the later years when he went to graphite neck, whammy bar and more distortion. Jerry's Tiger Oh sooooooo beautiful Great guitar combo during this period.
@bigtex9265 Yea tiger came a year after this. Both the guitars were auctioned off after jerrys death. Tiger was auctioned off for 957,500$ a new world record for the most expensive guitar ever played by a guitarist. The only one that beats this is a guitar that was signed by a bunch of famous guitarists for a benefit. together tiger and wolf sold for 1.74 million dollars
To me the Donna & Keith Godchaux period is the best one when it comes to Grateful Dead history. Just awsome.

Donna ruined so many great shows. She's obviously got no rhythm and no volume control. Can't stand her howling!
