Well I may not have all the technical abilities that RephaimAOD has (I play and sing a little, not nearly as good as Matthew obviously), but I do know what sounds good to my ears. That sounded real good to these not-so-criticial ears! Keep em coming Matthew!

You are right. He is not Bono and lacks the vocal power that has made this song and U2 in general one of the most popular acts in the history of music. But you could hold that against most artists.

@RephaimAOD But that quality to Matthew's voice that you call "raspiness" allows him to sing with a kind of unique emotion that even Bono can't (not more, just different). So considering all the amazing original work Matthew has created, I think an imperfect (whatever that means in art) cover of a song written in a radically different style than his own can be forgiven. Besides, if your purported expertise can't allow you to appreciate it, that's your loss. I will keep enjoying it.

The vocalist is mostly at fault; his voice is pinched throughout, lacking Bono's soaring fluctuations. (Esp at parts like beaten and BLOWN by the wind, where that power is so necessary.) His raspiness isn't sufficient to cover it up. The timing fail at the beginning of the song is off-putting. And while this stripped-down version takes away the magical atmospheric walls of sound which characterise this song, it hasn't been replaced by anything noteworthy.

Knowing the attitude of Youtubers to simply thumb down everything that isn't in line with their opinions instead of considering alternate viewpoints with an open mind, I'd like to state some credentials first. I'm a sound technician, and also an electric guitarist who loves The Edge. If you listen critically instead of being overawed by the novelty, you'll realise this is a notably poor cover despite the wealth of quality available to the artist given the recording studio.
