@H3LLK3RN Here's a short list of stellar banjo recordings: Tony Trischka, "Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular" (Rounder); Bela Fleck, "Perpetual Motion" (Sony); Bela Fleck, "Tales From the Acoustic Planet" (volumes 1, 2 and 3 (my favorite is 2, but they are all stunning)), Warner. I believe that all these were Grammy-nominated. There are more, but this is a good place to start. These guys are as official as you can get.
@RickRiman thank you a lot man :) when i try to search for banjo music all i can find is some random guy trying to play super mario or other random sh** bleh...thanks again
If I was walking around those woods and heard this, I'd turn right the fuck around. That's a lot of backwoods mofos in one place! LOL! I joke.....kinda
The 1st banjo player is Earl Scruggs - who wrote the tune, followed by Little Roy Lewis and a 'skinny' Sonny Osborne with a beard, a tall Bill Emmerson, J.D. Crowe, Japanese guy from Bluegrass 45, unknown blonde kid, another unknown guy, Don Stover in a white hat, another ??, yet another ?? with glasses, John McEuen, J.D again, Randy Scruggs (or is it Eric Weissberg?) and then finally Earl. In background are Jimmy Martin in crazy hat, blonde Dale Reno and dark haired Charlie Waller.
truegrassBoy, here is a list with one listed as unknown who was eventually identified, I just can't find the post as we speak...I am very surprised you didn't recognize Jimmy Arnold who was a great and respected banjo picker. Earl S. Sonny Osborne Bill Emerson JD Crowe Saburo Watanabe Inoue (Bluegrass 45) (unidentified) Jimmy Arnold Don Stover Alan Munde Roger Smith Rick Ryman (New Deal String Band) JD Crowe (again) Randy Scruggs Earl Scruggs
Earl Scruggs Sonny Osborne Bill Emerson JD Crowe Saburo Watanabe Inoue (Bluegrass 45) (unidentified) Jimmy Arnold Don Stover Alan Munde Roger Smith Rick Ryman (New Deal String Band) JD Crowe (again) Randy Scruggs Earl Scruggs
The "unidentified" guy is Eddie Hoyle; and the picker mis-identified as "Roger Smith" is John Farmer, who was playing banjo in Del McCoury's band at the time. Roy Lewis and A.L. Wood are shown, but don't play a break at the microphone in this clip. Ronnie (not Dale) Reno, who was playing electric bass with the Osborne Brothers, is in the background.
damn i started playing the guitar then got into bob dylan n now i feel ive been missing out on a entire world of something i enjoy. after having just saw this video its hard to describe or explain how i feel. but sorta like seeing your 1st pair of tits better than xmas like the oppisite of the holacoust might feel to a jew dang man i dont know but there is a whole world of folk banjo music that im just getting into to bad its not as popular as the olden days when country was good not commercial
hey cmon melodic banjo is still part of the instrument why flub the only guy that thought of something different than Earl plays.Earl is and always will be THE MAN.
back then, the only ladies on stage that I can recall were in the Lewis Family. There were, however, plenty of chics out in the field and camp grounds....guaranteed!
I seem to recollect that Gloria Belle (Flickinger) was playing bass with Jimmy Martin that weekend (but was not on stage during the FMB segment). But true enough, female performers in blugrass were a rarity back in 1971; it was a great idea, whose time had not yet come. Interestingly, in the movie (from which this clip was taken), an 8-year old Missy Raines shows up in the audience; she grew up to be a monster bass player.
That's the truth! I have a picture of me when I was little standing with Lester Flatt. Earl pushed me over there and made me get my picture with him. He had his banjo strapped to him, probably the one he is using now.
I know you will all think this awful of me but. I couldn't help but think that this reminded me of a bunch of johns pulling a train with the microphone being the trick. Dueling Banjo Gang bang? The little man that had to lean forward to get his, Banjo closer, sealed the deal for this bad comment. :0)
Thanks Rick, for the update. If true, maybe JH pronounced his name too much like Harvard to the southern ear, and Chet, who had an eye for Talent, convinced him to pronounce Hartford to make it distinctive-? Just a wild guess
Rick- who was the first guy shaking hands with ES, and I feel dumb, but also who is the late great JH you refer to? ( me, originally plectrum player, picked up 5 string bluegrass late 70's-must of missed something)
Sonny Osborne is the first guy shaking hands with Earl. And while I don't know the full details of John Hartford's name change, I do remember that back in the mid 60's, BEFORE he became famous, JH was well-known among southern / central Illinois bluegrass musicians such as the Bray Brothers, Pat Burton, and Michael Melford, whom I remember telling me that John spelled his name "Hartford" but pronounced it with a silent "t". Amazing that I remember anything from the Johnson administration....
Alan Munde had a great style-looked like shit tho-too bad his riff got killed by the sound breakup-all are great-its the old u-tube sound clip that makes some sound bad when it wavers and warbles
Why? It's not as if he's handing out his bank account numer or anything. And how many people in the world do you think are named Gary Lee? hehe. Anyway, banjo rocks!

The reason they all play the same break is out of respect for Earl - they let him have the "up the neck break" at the end.
