I support any efforts to put the word out there that the Taino still have a valid contribution to the overall culture of Boriken. As to the comment that our natives did not use feathers, that is a mistaken notion. The written reports discribe head dress made of different feathers such as guaraguao (Red Tail Hawk and owl feathers,. Also our people traded with natives of the main land they had canoes that seated up to one hundred and fifty people.
The modern day aboriginals from all over the Americans wear normal clothes. I think the taparrabo thing is unnecessary. It's a nice attempt, but this is not where Tainos would be if they had been allowed to continue speaking their language and practicing their religion to this day. They would probably be more like Natives of Central America and Venezuela, that is to say, pretty typical Latin Americans :) Taino spirituality IS beautiful and people should embrace it!
This is ridiculous...tainos never wore any clothing whatsoever... except for naguas for married taino women... aditionally no taino wore feathers ever because there werent any big feathered birds or colorful birds in PR... No one wore headresses either... all the taino wore was some war paint and the cacique his guani of gold that is all...
I am a Taino, a very proud taino I married a Native american from the US, and my chidren belong to their father's tribe, but not for one second of my life, I had stop feeling pride for my people, especially those who really mean well and are not ashame of identifying themselves as taino indians. It takes time to restored the 500 hundred years old of "extintion" and de- americanized puertorricans and their white or European ideologies. Our african ancestry is powerful and so it is our Taino's.
I believe the girl's provocative dance will improve with time, and I also believe she doesn't mean anything bad by it, she just proud. Taino people are beautiful, I hear that all throughout indian country at pow wows all the time. These young Taino people will learn and we have to support what they are doing. Culture is beautiful, and we have to respect it and honor it. If their taino pride it is boosting their ego, well good for them! a lot of our youth can benefit from some self esteem.
I applaud the effort of these young Boricuas in their effort to restored what was taken from us culturally. The more they learn about our heritage as Taino people well... the more they know. It doesn't matter what motivate these young people to dowhat they do, but I know for sure they could be selling drugs in a corner or killing each other. Their cultural awareness and curiosity is saving their lives. They are speaking for those who didn't had a voice, The tainos who didn't survive.
At least the group Tabonuco is really trying to bring back our Taino culture, of course there is a lot to learn but it takes a lot of pride and courage to do what they are doing. Exposing themselve to be mocked and ridiculized by puertorricans and others. Indian culture every where is been romantiziced and expected to be certain way. I believe the Taino people, those who die in Borikenisland at the hands of such of cruel conquerous deserve to be remember and honor.
You can't get to your destination focusing only in the rear view mirror, cute video, factual? Quen sabe. Turn your head around, focus in front and lets go full speed ahead. Viva Borinquen!
Totally ridiculous. Displays like this one just go on to prove that not only have the Taino lost their ways-but are making things up as they go along---showing themselves off like peacocks when in reality they look just plain silly. This is a display purely of total self indulgence and makes a mockery of what it is to be native today. Tainos get youselves togther and stop trying to cry out to the world just how "indian" you are-and start living in honor -show some humility already!
@deadnomore123 we have been programed to think a certain way by our conquerors. They wrote our history to thier convenience. They portrayed us as animals and savages to the point that after 500years of reading and hearing that some of us subconsciously belive it and this makes some of us hate ourselfs and our own people.
@deadnomore123 As Taino we have to scream out loud our indianess, yes as loud as we can because for so long we were denied the right to do it with the myth of extintion. It is a very indian thing to promote culture and to do it with pride. The headress is very appropiate made with the feathers of tropical birds. the dances well, they may not be exactly they way they were 500 hundred years ago but neither is anything else in the world. Learning and honoring your ancestors is not ridiculous.
Se recrea para que no se olviden !! Ya que se escribe poco de estos ceremoniales.Gracias

I mean to say, it takes time to restored a 500 hundred years old "extintion" lie, again many blessings and let's support these young people.
