The question should be: Did our military make a failed attempt to rescue the hostages and during the attack did the Somali pirates shoot the hostages as a result? That seems like a more reasonable possibility. It seems strange they claim they heard shots fired from the boat and as a result they responded finding mortally wounded hostages. If the pirates wanted them killed they would have had ample time to do so.
