I figure them out mostly from the tabs I get of Ultimate Guitar Tabs. After I get those down, I start learning the song further by ear and watch live performances and literally watching Ray/Franks hands on the frets. :P

Yeah, I use tabs when i first learn the song, then I go by ear and watch live performances of them playing the song. I got the right sound after I watch Ray play the solo here: watch?v=8F-z9LpYYqY

Start off slow man. Find an old acoustic if you can. It'll take a while to get used to subconcious strumming, but it'll sink in :)

BTW, those triplets scaling up took quite a while to learn (about a week.) Thanks to that solo I can actually do a lot more with the others (most notably FLW, which I'll be covering next. ;) )
