  • Verse at 2:15 has always hooked me on the studio version "You don't show much these days... Gets so f***ing cold... I love the secret places... But I can't go any more"

  • Who are the two girls at 2:17? Tash on the right. Who's on the left?

  • My fave song from Choirgirl :) Saw it twice live during the Choirgirl tour. Those were the days :)

  • To Jenny1996324.....because it's soundcheck, not actually a concert.

  • awesome song, pure poetry !

  • I have this on dvd and if I remember correctly it is a soundcheck. I think thats why there are only the 2 people there.

  • 2:18 why is there only 2 people in the audience?lol

  • @Jenny1996324 soundcheck

  • I didn't realize I wasn't in love with someone until he dedicated this song to me. Tore my heart up to finally see through him.. Tori has taught me that truth+vulnerability+beauty=LOVE. Thank you.

  • I never ever ever tire of hearing her. Nobody else even comes close

  • girls you got to know, when it's time to turn the page.

  • This song speaks to me now more than ever. Just lost a Northern Lad. Haven't even known him for 2 months & crying every day. I miss him :(

  • I STILL CA'T GET THROUGH THIS SONG WITHOUT CRYING EVEN AFTER THOUSANDS OF LISTENS... I WILL ALWAYS THINK OF MY FIRST LOVE AND ALL THE WONDERFUL YEARS WE SPENT TOGETHER WHEN I HEAR THIS SONG... HE'S THE ONE THAT BOUGHT ME THIS ALBUM AS WELL AS MANY OTHER TORI AMOS' ALBUMS... I NEVER REALLY GOT OVER OUR SPLIT AND THIS SONG JUST HITS THAT NERVE EVERYTIME... MISS U BOODY

  • @GENOSTIFFY me too! I get so emotional everytime I hear this song!

  • *sob*

  • Do you by chance have Pretty Good Year from this DVD to post?

  • Pure beauty. To my ex husband - you were my northern lad......It still hurts to know I lost you somewhere along the way.

  • @NMerenda1 the good news is......there are plenty of us norwegian lads running around....you are a good woman and deep of spirit.....the warrior poet northern lad is waiting for you too....the lad who will love and live with you....the lad who will speak and fight for your love.....may the gods bless you.......just keep being the strong woman.......trust me.......we're watching.

  • @roodog1974 that was beautiful....thank you

  • @NMerenda1 no.....we're all kindred here......we're all deeper than we need to be......we all FEEL way too much and LOVE way too much and GIVE way way way too much........that's why this speaks to us....but I meant it......even through the words on the screen I can feel your soul's heat. Keep being that person....don't compromise and don't lose it....so many pale shadows wandering in the world's mist as it is.

  • Incredible voice.. She is so beauty.

  • I'm a Northern lad.......and Tori will always have a piece of my soul in her back pocket.

  • @roodog1974 You dirty bugger ;¬)

  • @thaddeuslowe for the record? I've never buggered anyone in my life. Then again...it's not over yet.

  • Aural BJ...thanks Tori

  • Girls you've got to know when it's time to turn the page. <3

  • Had a Northern Lad, well not exactly had...

...You don't show much these days, it gets so fucking cold....

  • but I feel this cake just isn't done....she rules.

  • this is the essence of good music : one person, one instrument, shivers all over - superb !

  • I would kill to have her necklace.

  • I recognised this beautiful song whilst watching 'Snow Cake' featuring Sigourney Weaver playing an autistic woman in perhaps her finest performance to date. It's played during a love scene with Alan Rickman and Carrie-Anne Moss.

  • Man, this song hurts my heart. I've seen her live 4 times and I just sit in awe w/ chills on my arms. <3 "Girls, you've got to know when it's time to turn the page."

  • I hope you enjoyed this song i showed you tonight, even if it is a bit depressing. Just listen to something happy afterwords. :)

  • God, I love this song. It goes very near the top of my Favorite Breakup Songs list. Probably in the top 3 or 5. Mmm.. Can't get enough, even when I'm not breaking up.

  • jketchais pas pourquoi yavait genre 2 personnes dans la foule mais en vrai

    c'est un test de son.

  • Just to clarify the lyrics are "You change like sugar cane" says my northern lad NOT you taste like sugar cane. I feel this is important because it changes the meaning of the song....During harvesting once sugar cane is cut, it starts to lose it's sugar / sweetness.

  • it gets so fucking cold <3

  • I love you so Tori

  • Oh my god, I saw her at the Victoria Theatre last night and this song was STUNNING! She played the best and most intense set I have ever seen her play ;)

  • @madamjosephine I was there too, and I agree with you completely! T'was such a stunning show!

  • I loved his secret places..But I can't go anymore.

Said if you could see me now Girls you've got to know When it's time to turn the page When you're only wet Because of the rain....

  • absolutely the most goosebumping song ever from Tori. Much luv Tori people xx

  • it nearly makes me cry every time... love you Tori

  • seit kurzem läuft ein neuer stream...and it remains the same...wat sonst...

  • I used to drive for hours and play this song over and over...... Ya know I've never seen her in concert...I sure hope I do someday

  • @Multiryan1982 i hope you tet to see her too. Its an amazing expericence... She just posted the first 10 dates for the new tour in the US... Starts Nov. 29th! Hope you get yourself a ticket... you'll never regret it.

  • @Multiryan1982 i hope you tet to see her too. Its an amazing expericence... She just posted the first 10 dates for the new tour in the US... Starts Nov. 29th! Hope you get yourself a ticket... you'll never regret it.

  • @Multiryan1982

You definitely have to see her live, it's magic

  • @Multiryan1982 seen her many times live. lucky enough to have seen her live in new orleans front row on my 21st birthday....you really are missing out on something special if you haven't seen her live. I hope you get the chance some day...you'll never forget it and you'll want more!

  • @Multiryan1982 I have seen her 15 yrs ago and still remember how powerful she was. You must see Tori live! :)

  • @ arsonheart: thanks for great music. And german text harmonise with this English-Text, also irgendwie

  • manche bieten Bertie Bott's beans an.

  • really love her.

many years passed but i still remember this beautiful voice & the passion of piano

  • i remember the pain i felt while listening to this song back in maybe 2002. i was suicidal and that song felt like a catharsis. especially at about 4min.34 or8 sec. it made me go through these moments without killing myself. thank you tori. and thank you for posting this magical moment arsonheart

  • I love you Tori!

  • What an incredibly beautiful song.

  • Tori's music gives me the most vivid experience of music I have ever had.

  • makes me remember being sixteen, skipping school on a rainy day and spending the day with my first love........this song was playing on my stereo that day.......and i still remember....and always will......

  • Brings me to tears every time. Love the use of "fucking" in the second verse. So necessary and full of emotion; twin emotions of sadness and anger at the loss of the relationship. Her words are like poetry. Love her.

  • What a wonderful voice posession!!! Wonderful song!

  • God, who painted that?

  • Tori Amos has so many great break up songs... but this is the best one.

    Brilliant.

"Don't say that you don't"...bloody brilliant.

  • Voz e som da música que encanta adorei....

  • Don'tcare if this is about Trenrt Reznor. Tori is always the one...

  • mmm

  • Love this!

  • I guess this might help with what its about : "my heart goes out to where that song [northern lad] comes from. it's very much about thinking you were loved for who you were, and realizing you weren't and realizing maybe you don't love yourself. the line, i guess you go too far/when pianos try to be guitars is just about never being enough. i felt that with my instrument sometimes, wanting to be jimmy page. you can only be you. a lot of times it's never enough for people."

  • perhaps it is about her masterbating because she is unsatisfied and in a failing relationship?

  • RedMeat, if you ever read this, I'll always remember you - and this song will be the landmark of everything we went through. Do you remember the night we got drunk and drove home, sat in your parking lot and it was raining outside and this came on shuffle? out of 6 cd's, THIS song played.

I love you forever, and I'm sorry it had to end like that.

  • I just bawled my eyes out as if hearing it again for the very first time...girls you've got to know...

  • This song is in regards to Tori Amos' miscarriage. The entire album is about it. Take the line "and I feel something is wrong, and I feel this cake just isnt done". Its probably her most personal record in my opinion. Great song. Great Lady. Genius indeed. Eric.

  • I think you will find that the song on Choirgirl about her misscarriage was 'Playboy Mommy'.

This song has nothing to do with it.

Like I said its one of Toris more dirty songs...isnt that right Dr Nerdo????

  • Right about Playboy Mommy (although a toddler wasted on vodka could realize that much--the lyrics are pretty damn straightforward), but woefully incorrect about Northern Lad.

  • @DrNordo Well now that I realise that you are the final arbiter on interpreting music then Ill just shut up and learn my place.

But before I do can I give you a nice big sloppy kiss and tell you just how wonderful you are for putting me in my well deserved place?

    Mmmmmmwwha!

*Knees the Dr in the nads*

  • @spkenn36 No prob, bro. Anything I can do to help correct the ignorant and ill-informed.

  • Oh very gracious of you...

Sorry but Im not going to play the 'I like Tori more than you' game.

    Wanker...

  • @spkenn36 Nor am I. I am playing the "Wtf are you saying? You have no clue wtf you are talking about" game.

  • @DrNordo whatever gets you through the day kid...

Go on...have the last word, Im sure everyone is hanging off your every word.

Go and have a wank yourself and exercise that limp wrist of yours....

  • Comment removed

  • @spkenn36 Pot, meet Kettle.

  • @DrNordo Great comeback....

  • girls you know....when its time to turn the page....

  • Is it just my dirty mind or is this another of Tori's masturbation songs?

  • It's just youir dirty mind. That and the fact that you're an idiot.

  • @DrNordo listen to the lyrics - sounds very much like fantasy to me...idiot....

  • I'm very familiar with the lyrics, ya toolbox. Why don't you go ahead and point to me a single line that even hints at masturbation. Oh, that's right...because if you did that would simply be further proof regarding your mental deficiency.

  • @DrNordo

sounds like you have an issue with masturbation. *period*

    no comment

  • Dude, wtf are you talking about? I also don't think that Ironman is about eating at McDonald's but that doesn't mean that I have something against cheeseburgers. This song, Northern Lad, has NOTHING to do with beating off.

  • While you're out there shouting abuse at anyone you dont agree with why dont you take the time to interpt it with a literary mind instead of one from a grommet.

A perfect man, unobtainable, a definate fantasy. 'Had a northern lad, well not exactly had'...

'Girls its time to turn the page, when your only wet because of the rain' Surely I dont need to explain this part to you...

I could go on but Ill leave it up to you nord to figure the rest out.

    Fuckin facist!

  • Tori has many songs about masturbation, most albums have at least one wanking song. She is a woman firmly in control of her sexuality and is very frank about masturbation.

Now do you have an issue with that Dr???

  • Dude....I am very much aware of Tori's subject matter. I have been a religious Toriphile ever since Little Earthquakes first hit the shelves, so take your holier than thou "I know more about Tori than you do" BS and stick it.

  • As for those lines you quoted from the song, you took 2 lines and interpreted them completely out of context from the rest of the lyrics. The "had a/well not exactly" line refers to a failed relationship (which is the focal point of this entire song, as made obvious by the ENTIRETY of the lyrics) and the "turn the page" line refers to moving on with life.

  • I fell in love with this song...as I heard it for the first time...definitely...

  • can this song be any more beautiful?

  • i dont think so. she's amazing.

  • @primaprimotv definitely not

  • @primaprimotv Nope!!:)

  • Melodia mea preferata.......

  • Do you by chance have Pretty Good Year from this video collection? It's very good, and all the versions on You Tube aren't all that good of that song. Just wondering?

  • My favorite Tori song.

  • same :)

  • @DrNordo same this song has alot of meaning to me :)

  • Are there any other vids from that Librarian's DVD? I'd love to watch them, this one is so good. I thought I don't like Nothern Lad but after this one...

  • She did honey and I think pretty good year

  • Ihad this on DVD too BUT I STEPPED ON IT ON ACCIDENT! I loved it and I was so sad that I was too much of a slob to pick it up off the floor... :(

  • I have this DVD...her performance of Pretty Good Year is equally beautiful.

  • Well, it's my time to really know that I am only wet because of the rain...

  • Ottima questa versione live di Tori Amos.

  • amazing performance...great song!

  • I agree, she takes music to a different level. Sublime genius.

  • I love this song. It's one of my favorites. :)

  • there are no words to describe how beautiful this song is!!

  • this is what I call REAL TALENT

  • soo beautiful... *cry*

    wonderful song <3

  • I love her. She makes the f word sound so eloquent. haha

  • I was thinking the same thing about that line-- how you don't feel dirty singing it at; its not a cuss word, but a potent adjective lol. This live performance gives me chills , especially the ending.

  • This is my favorite song. I dedicate this one for my ex girlfriends that i've met 20 years ago. I met her recently, we are real friends now. Lydia, it is for you, let your heart speaking. Thank you for all. With Friendly love, Johan

  • ADORE.....my northern lad

  • LOVE

  • It's my favortite cool song of Tori. This song make me cry each time i listen it... Thanks godness Tori!

  • that's not fair, this sounds better than on the album, have to listen to this then, sounds amazingly powerful

  • hermosa cancion...

  • semplicemente perfetta!

  • that means 'Simply Perfect' for those people who don't speak Gobbledygook

  • I just came back across this after a few months. Love this song. Love that voice. Brings up so many emotions. Got over those. But then looked at the comments and thought Jesus - how many of us can evoke and deliver that kind of emotion and then put up with the criticism that even little comments can bring.

Either you are a drunk teenager making a snide comment or maybe you havent found yourself yet or, then again maybe its just me :)

  • One of my favorite songs by any artist, and the song of my life right now. "If you could see me now..." I cried the first time I heard it. Tori looks so beautiful here, too. <3

  • La ascolto da ore, e ogni volta è come se fosse il primo incanto.

  • amazing ...love the 2 people crowd

  • i love it

  • unas de mis canciones predilectas ....

  • Artists typically do sound checks before the live audience arrives for the concert. Hence no audience, but if you happen to be around, it doesn't matter, it still moves you.

  • what a noble gloom.

  • One of my favorite Tori songs. She sounds every bit as great live as in studio. Brilliant.

  • This from her Welcome to Sunny Florida gig, which was the closing show during the Scarlet tour.

  • I mean Original Sin tour. I think :D

  • inaggettivabile.

è la trentesima volta che vedo questo video e ogni volta è come se venissi stuprato...

  • best live song ever....

  • Love seeing my girl in concert just awesome

  • Hey folks, the whole DVD is great and I really liked mother Amos and her little file folder.

  • Brilliant performance, but I think this is a sound check, not exactly a live performance.

  • If you look at the reflection in the piano, there is no audience xD

    Just empty blue chairs

  • Well, "live" as opposed to 'recorded in studio' is the intent here. :)

  • This has absolutely nothing to do with masturbation.... perhaps you're the one with the obsession.

  • yeah i don't think soooo

  • Oh really? Gosh that's my favorite Tori song. I didn't notice it could be about masturbation...But now you say it...!! lol ...it makes it geniusly even more interesting now! thanks.

  • "My heart goes out to where that song [Northern Lad] comes from. VH1 storytellers.

It's about more than just masturbation.

  • Absolutely Wonderful!! I have seen Tori in concert many times. She is my all time favorite. Thanks for posting

  • Absolutely beautiful..... I love this song, my favourite From The Choirgirl Hotel. Thanks for posting x:-)

  • are you kidding me? she is that old? wow

  • She was born August 22 1963 so she is 45 at the moment.

  • I can't believe her supple voice (she was 53), a 5 star performance. Kudos to the cameras. A great lady and a great song. Thanks!

  • omg... 53? you do know she is younger than that, right?

  • hehehehe she was about 40 I think:)
