It's not really a stupid war, Saddam needed to be taken out in Iraq, we did that in 3 months. Now we need to rebuild their government. They sent a decent size to crush the american rebels, We weren't even united and we had only been there for not even that long as settlements of that size. Russia and France had plenty of time to modernize. We didn't even have a standing army.
I've heard all about your russian revolution, but Russia has a huge population, and mounting a standing force would be alot easier.
