On Trakabat's channel, the vid starts off saying, "The Government has been making an annual investment of 3 to 4 million dollars researching new pest control methods..." Yet, they and their flunkies the department of conservation still dumps hundreds of tonnes of poison into our lakes, rivers, and bush, parroting the same old crap - it's good for us, our environment, and our native species. None of them even remotely knows what harm this poison is doing to us. Or do they even care?
@goldenscales, it is complete rubbish to say that hundreds of tonnes of poison are being dropped in lakes, rivers and bush. We do know what 1080 is doing, we also care about our environment and our native wildlife, which is why we use 1080 and a range of other pest control methods.
@TrakaBat If you add up over the last few years the amount of 1080 thats been dropped, it will work out to hundreds of tons. Do you always discount the 1080 pellets that have been found in streams, lakes and rivers? Of course you do. your job depends on you having a blind eye to the real facts. I personally have seen 1080 pellets in streams and river edges, dropped by helicopters. Now call me a liar.
@goldenscales, your comment ignores the fact that 1080 is biodegradable which means that it is complete rubbish for you to say that hundreds of tonnes are being dropped in lakes, rivers and bush.
U dont understand you r enemy. Possums are amazingly adaptable creatures. Did u know that they are NATURALLY immune to snake venom? So, what do think 1080 gonna do? The survivors will have built a natural immunity against it and go on breeding as if nothing happened...
Oxyaena, we do understand our enemy. We can't eradicate possums, but we can suppress numbers low enough to protect entire forest ecosystems. They don't build immunity to 1080 because the toxin is biodegradable and does not accumulate in them. They can get bait shy, but this isn't an issue in reality. We've used 1080 to good effect in NZ for 50-years.
DOC are liars and now they employ 16 spin doctors in the NZ Government to spread their lies and propoganda re 1080. Of course the fellow in this vidio is biased in his representation of 1080, he was PAID to say this !!!
You have to really think about these things. Government owns entire shares in the use of 1080. There is a serious amount of money going through them when the stuff is used! They say we'll stop when "something else" comes along! "Something else" has been here the whole time! Ground control. Works every time! Employs people, has minute bi-kill the country you cant reach doesnt need doing cause its not near cattle farms! Open your eyes! 1080 is gonna kill the very thing we're trying to protect!
Happyhellybell, we do a huge amount of ground control for Conservation and it isn't going to replace 1080. Especially as the things that need protecting are often in the places that can't be reached.
Sorry Hellybell, but that's just not true. where 1080 is used the native wildlife is surviving and thriving, compared to areas with no pest control.
There are plenty of private projects that would tell you that as well. ground control's great in areas where you can get to it - but it simply can't be done in inaccessible areas.
You guys are really missing the point on this stuff. and the facts seem to have gone out the window.
Every option for pest control has problems with non-target effects. The advantage of a properly run 1080 control is that it minimises unwanted impacts down to minor levels while still providing effective control on a scale unmatched by any other method. What would be a disaster for biodiversity conservation in New Zealand would be to stop the use of biodegradable1080 under the impression that there is another way. There just isn't.
This is true indeed. What baffles me is that the activists think they are going to succeed in having it banned. We all know that the only reason 1080 will be discontinued is if a better solution has proved to be more effective, such as the biological control method that is being developed which is expected to come into use in around 2013 if all goes well, 1080 will be discontinued, and all that time activists have spent campaigning will be a waste because its days are numbered anyway.

@COZMICINDIAN - we are doing an excellent job of protecting our native species in NZ.

Posts such as the one by gunnaterry illustrate just how little anti-1080 activists know of care about NZs native wildlife.

Typical unsubstantiated and meaningless anti-1080 PR slogan, tutekelahore, got anything factual to contribute?

Nope, you didn't present a single fact in that post, imageandlikeness.

its a good point but isnt there a better way of targeting the pest... with less bi-catch

The effects of killing non target species are far outweighed by the recovery and regeneration due to reduced threats.

The effects on non-target species have been exagerated by anti-1080 activists.
