I notice Johnny says ".... the 88" while Dr John was soloing - something like "rebating the 88"? The 88 refers to the number of keys on the piano, but not sure of the first word. I've heard other musicians use a similar phrase, but don't exactly know the jive. Can anyone help me out? Great music, shame it gets talked over and faded out!
to limewire on the session's why cant they be put forth to much hassle im sure alot of people not just musicians but music lovers all over would love to see them wow how did you get the people to come together leon russel stevie ray all you mentioned dr john and johnny winters wow what a guitar player so see what you can do ok handle it alright thank you very much noke cleveland
Way way too good. I've had a v'tape of this episode for years and always wondered where it was from. LWRem is right -if this is representative of the series, I want dvds and I want them now.
Earlier in the show, these two do a version of "You Lie Too Much" that just knocks me over every time I hear it.
Yes, it was shot on Dec 1, 1983. Also Burton Cummings/Don Everly, Rik Emmett/Bruce Cockburn, Ronnie Hawkins/Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Goodram/Michael Johnson, Tom Schuyler/Dan Seals, Larry Gatlin/Mickey Newbury.
The Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell show also included Rosanne Cash and Albert Lee.
We did another 13 episodes four years later. I've always thought Rhino should release all 26 episodes on DVD, including the outtakes if they still exist. It was the least-structured tv show I've worked on
This is from "IN SESSION", a Canadian tv series. This episode was shot on Nov 23, 1983. I'm the recording engineer at 0:59. We did 13 shows in '83, and 13 more in '87. The concept was that the viewer was eavesdropping on a recording session by two old friends. We did Stevie Ray Vaughan w/ Albert King, Larry Carlton w/ BB King, Glen Campbell w/ Leon Russell, Emmylou Harris w/ Rodney Crowell, etc. All live off the floor w/ Toronto session players. Doug McClement, LiveWire Remote Recorders
Thanks for this great post. One of my favorite musical memories - seeing Jon Paris solo back in the day on guitar at South Street Seaport doing Talk is Cheap also Nadine.
Great Canadian show! I remember when this was first aired on TV back in the 80's. The station was located in Hamilton Ontario (I think), and they were famous for featuring many of the greats including Freddie and Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, as well as Canadian acts like The Phantoms, Jeff Healy, Dutch Mason, etc. The house band hiding in the booth were tight also. I think I still have a couple dozen episodes packed away in a box somewhere! Thanks for the great post!
A few years ago, two parents went out to dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said "Take the kids and get out of the house, we'll call the police. We don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand.
I almost thought it be jerry portnoy, but this guy doesn't look like him but the way he plays he comes very close being portnoys' gift of mastering the harp! one thing is for sure: this is not jw's bass player! who knows? you'd better report it...
He has his own video on you tube playing guitar called russellin around with Roger whittaker,, they called him up to play bass for a date ,, he showed up ,, turned out to be JW and Dr J ..... somone said something in this post about giving up a kidney ... I'll tell Brian
Its a "reverse" GIBSON Firebird made between 1963 & 1965 !! The song is originally a writing of J.B.Lenoir who recorded this song already in the 1950ties !!
I got a cd called "Extended Versions" that has a real kick-ass version of this tune....I think from around '69 with Turner & Shannon...Johnny plays amazingly fast on that one! No one could touch him back then. He does some riffs on that one I've only heard on one other song......
Unfreaking believable! I'm a big Johnny Winter fan anyway, but together these guys really cook! Is anything like this available on a live CD? Are there any younger musicians out there today who can perform like that?
This one is great but has anyone ever seen JW's version of this one from the Royal Albert Hall 1970? It is available somewhere because i saw it on the OGWT around 1976-77. If you saw it you wouldn't believe what you were watching. Johnny pogo bounces right the way thru it and nearly falls off stage.
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS. Sorry about this people, I read it myself by mistake...You will get kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. I can only take one twelve bar per month, and that did very nicely! All played with great character.Remember Winter's"Careful with a fool"?And Dr John's "Duke Elegant was a masterpiece.
I certainly do remember his "Careful With A Fool"! Ditto his version of "It's My Own Fault" (the live version from "The Best of Johnny Winter" is my favorite.) Are either of these viewable here or available on DVD?
This was an awesome show filmed up here in Canada, they used to have SRV, and Rik Emmett on here too, sad its not around anymore, you could learn a thing or two on it.
why is this not released on an official DVD???
Could be a deal for all of us.
