@TheAdam159 yeah, I get the same response as well. PT is my favorite band by a long shot and I've only discovered them about a year after watching Gavin Harrison on youtube.
@ryonafan Both great records but i would suggest Fear of a Blank Planet first. You should also check out another great record by them called "In Absentia".
This album changed my life! By far my favourite album ever though my favourite song ever is "anesthetize" from "fear of a blank planet" is my favourite ever song
Anyone know why they don't play deadwing and shallow live? their site says any song they don't play live it's because it's hard to recreate the sound but I don't see what could can't be translated into a live atmosphere? :S
@lolwut162 In an interview Gavin said that it's because they weren't really received that well in a live setting. It's unfortunate, because I'd really love to hear them played live.
No no no, I'm glad Porcupine Tree is not that famous, and slightly underrated. I would hate to see some little school kids walking around singing the song they heard on the radio in the morning, that happens to be one of my favorite Steven Wilson pieces. That's just the truth. Hahaha
@ultimate0death I agree, but I wish they'd be appreciated more or at the least make more money out of it. Their FAQ says they lose money at nearly every concert they play. :(
@speckytom Believe it or not, the rhythm actually fits into a 4/4 measure. Harrison splits it up though, with 5 eighths on one side and 3 eighths on the other (5+3/8).
@hillysats no I know what the line 6 pod is. I was talking about the metal looking box-like pedal (not the wah) next to the wound up cable. It looks like some sort of echo box.
No brother. Methinks you're wrong. Steve Wilson is a brilliant song writer. He's music might seem simple, but it's so layered. Its beautiful. The man's vocal melodies are unique and his harmonies are brilliant. He's an alright guitar player, a good singer but an INCREDIBLE song writer :) You've either not listened to enough of his music ( and it does take some serious listening to make out all the layers ) or you're just not into this kind of music. Either way, listen to PT some more. Cheers :)
My only doubt in life is that my friend turned me on to Porcupine tree, but i cant see them live or get any new albums because Im in the middle of nowhere... I personally think that Steven Wilson is a music genuis and is THE BEST artist i know
Eh, if i had my way Porcupine tree would be a bit like what Radiohead and Tool is now, Eg well known across the world, but the mainstream media don't touch because they're so ambitious.
I only discovered Steve Wilson about six months ago and I am totally in awe. I can't believe more people don't know about Porcupine Tree. Strangely enough, though, I kind of feel the same way AHMADF93 does - I'm partly glad they're not better known.
@otto192 The song at the end is "Mellotron Scratch", track #6 off the Deadwing album. Specifically it's the last minute or so of the song, and it's the same song that Steve's talking about the Townsend thing and adding distortion earlier in the video, but now I'm just being a dork. Love this band...
the first thing that Gavin plays sounds like Mother & Child Divided..!! :D one of the best bands... along with Dream Theater, my other favorite..!! :)
Isurus, an original and progressive rock band based in South London, are looking for a vocalist. We have a professionally equipped studio. Currently, we are a guitarist, bassist, and drummer and are looking for a likeminded singer to complete our lineup - someone versatile with a great voice (think Maynard James Keenan, Mike Patton, James Labrie, etc).
@smashingchap11 I heard that too and I can't figure out which Townsend he's talking about. Either way, whether it's Devin or Pete he's talking about, it still sounded cool as hell.
no one can say muse or porcupine are crap. they are both extremely talented bands. you cant say that matt isnt a better singer than steven! its just fact. i love both bands.
@topcat2726 Technically better at using his voice when it comes to tonality. Where matt has a whiny falsetto voice, however, i feel Steven has the most pleasant one i've ever heard. In the same way i feel Matt has a monotonous whiny voice, but then Steven also has a few songs in which this would fit as a discription.
In range, Matt may be better, but in terms of creativity, i'll give you the same medicine: you can't say Steven isn't a more creative vocalist then Matt, it's just fact.
@MEA0105 matt uses his voice very well i think and i dont think it is whiny or monotonous. if anything i have found stevens voice more monotonous and whiny. matt has a larger range than steven and i think that on songs like ruled by secrecy, microcuts and showbiz he shows his versatility and range perfectly. it all comes down to personal taste in the end but i do think matt wins by quite a way. both are masterful song writers but theyre lyrics are a bit shaky sometimes
@topcat2726 I agree with you on all terms except the falsetto part of the range, as he can go higher (though not lower). But really, i've heard a lot of Muse songs which i consider decent, but the three you mentioned sort of contradict the "not whiny" part, especially showbiz. That's not regular voice range. It might be falsetto, might not, but half the people i know can do it. :p Anyway, no reason to have a dispute; i'll like whatever i want, and so will you.

I would rather say 5 genious artists since we should not forget their 5th unofficial member that always tours with them: John Wesley, great singer and guitar player!
Stephen Wilson and Colin Chapman: two gifted Britons. Chapman rewrote automotive history with his conceptions. Wilson, with Porcupine Tree, and like progressive artists are remaking music with new expansions on concepts. It's only a matter of time before Porcupine Tree writes a masterpiece and Lotus releases a car that re-imagines the vehicle.
@KetoCQ Having heard the fifth studio album of Muse, Muse is no longer a comparison with Porcupine Tree. It is disgrace to put Porcupine Tree with the overrated mainstream band. Muse WAS great till BH&R
@aeonzone i agree about the latest two muse albums being worse than their predecessors but there have been a few PT albums i havent rated that highly. It doesnt make me less of a fan, its just my opinion and taste. Muse are still one of my favourite bands ever and absolution and origin are my two fave albums ever. deadwing, in absentia and the incident are in the top 5 though haha! Muse beat anyone live hands down though and i have seen both PT and muse multiple times and own live dvds of both.
The music "industry" is run by satanists as is the world in general, that's why great bands such as Porcupine Tree simply get by on their own merits, while the worst puerile, negative and dumbed-down crap, "preformed" by mind-controlled puppets is promoted to the max to the mainsteam-media-addicted zombie masses. But don't take my word for it, look it up for yourself.
I agree, Porcupine Tree is wonderful, but get off your high horse buddy. It IS a money making industry, so of course labels will sign bands they feel they can milk to the largest consumers (kids and their parents) who tend not to be very music savvy.
Ummmm.... Porcupine Tree probably have more worldwide fans than Shakira or the Jonas Brothers, and their albums have progressively sold more each time. (Not to mention how much more devoted these fans are) don't worry about their "survival" they will reach the ears of all who want to listen
naw. Not more worldwide fans. I wish, oh god do I wish more people liked PT. But all there is anymore is shitty mainstream crap no kids want to hear music like this :(
thats very true, the jonass brothers and other such gay bands only have a bunch of 12-13 year old girls and their moms as fans, and maybe a bunch of homos who know NOTHING about music. steven wilson is pure genius, and the rest of the band is very talented, and if you put that together you get amazingness.

@manydaysago
thats very true, the jonass brothers and other such gay bands only have a bunch of 12-13 year old girls and their moms as fans, and maybe a bunch of homos who know NOTHING about music. steven wilson is pure genius, and the rest of the band is very talented, and if you put that together you get amazingness.
