I always thought the upside down Thunderbird bass was to cool looking. I was a teen when they were big, they sold alot of records. Their sound never got adapted to the 70's. Example the Bee Gees later adapted with the Disco era, so that explains why they more or less faded out. Their 67-68 stuff is a little more changing, just not enough. Another example look at the Beatles, Abbey Road album much different then the Early Beatles material. Abbey Road was nodding toward the early 70's styles.
BTW enter Barry Whitam on You Tube, Barry was the drummer who has his own group now. Listen to his drum solo, that will convince anyone , THESE GUYS COULD PLAY!!!
I worked with The Hermits in the early 70s and Lec the guitar player became one of most closest friends. I was with Lec several times when other musicans would come up to him after hearing him telling him he's the best guitar player they ever heard. Listen to the guitar solo in Henry VIII. That was Lec ( not Jimmy Page) playing it. Peter started alot of these rumors after he left the group. The Hermits told me Lec played guitar on every single song. Jimmy Page only helped out on 2 songs.

@Eyan1818 I wasn't around at this time, but I've done enough research to know that these guys were as popular as you say. But no matter how big they were then, it seems like their fame didn't really last. They seem to have been forgotten about. I never even knew who they were or had heard of them until about two years ago, even though I'm sure I'd heard their songs on the radio. But they definitely didn't last like the Rolling Stones or the Beatles. I wonder why.
I believe I read/heard somewhere (actually, I think it was an interview I saw here on youtube) that Peter was actually chatting it up with John Lennon right before "Must to Avoid" which is the reason why we see him running out to the stage.
Does anybody know who wrote the song "You Won't Be Leaving"? Such a great little (undiscovered) pop song. What a great hook. And Peter is the perfect singer for it.
They were great! The guitarists played some very cool stuff especially the rhythm player. These guys were very underrated as players and as a group....written off as bopper...but man you know British Invasion Pop stuff is cool...it's a chapter and it's upbeat....it's valid...they were pro...you couldn't make it on BS very easily back then...because the proof was in the performance....live.
Cubing Zone--I'm 57, so I was listening to all this music WHEN it was happening. But guess what, I often wish I was born in the 30's because I think the 40's and early 50's were terrific times.
saw them play in east providence rhode island a few years ago . they were great , peter was a gentleman . perfect . now i can say i met someone from the british invasion , thanks so much , great
they used to appear as herman and the hermits, a sort of comedy act like the barron knights. I'm sure they never ever considered themselves as rivals to the rolling stones. I can remember Eartha Kitt being disgusted at the sentiment of "you wont be leaving" on "juke box jury" as Noone was only 16 when "into something good" was released
Although I'm a straight man, Noone still looks this good nowadays and he's quite a few years past 60 years old. (I've both seen vid. of Noone, recently -- it's on youtube & I saw him in person, performing at an oldies show here in Atlanta back in May 2002 -- back then he actually still looked the performer and singer in this vid.)
One of the best "live" pop acts of the 60's. Most of their concert and tv clips are live and nopt dubbed, and they always sound great. I saw them in concert in 1968 when they brought The Who to the states as their opening act!
I know what you mean about having wished you'd lived during a different time, but just remember that if you had been around at this time that you wouldn't still have your whole life ahead of you now. It always seems like it would've been better to have lived in some other time, but don't feel this way and then make the mistake of missing out on what's special and unique about this time. Remember, each moment has something that no other does!
Wow! Despite the teeny bopper image they projected the band had a catalog of great music well versed in pop, the music hall tradition and R&B. The lead guitarist Barry _? was really very good. In this clip he stayed in the background a lot. Hermans Hermits 1st album was the very first LP record my folks bought me when I was 7 years old in 1965!
Barry was the drummer, Derek Leckenby was the lead guitarist. Peter Noone said he could play like James Burton. Wish there were some records where he did that.
Kinda funny. At 35 seconds in one of the guitarists knocks his mike out of the stand. You can clearly hear the "clunk" as well as see Noone cracking up.
This video also offers definitive proof that the Hermits could & did perform their own music live, as Peter Noone's gestures and mannerisms, lapses in vocals, etc., match what's going on audibly.
Herman's Hermits were a genuine band that played live and usually in the recording studio, except upon occasions where more seasoned musicians were needed for certain sessions, which was always & still is the case, even with the most legendary artists and bands.
Okay, now that I know that they did perform their own music and that they could play, there's something else I'm curious about. Did they ever write any of their own songs, or did it all come from either other artists or composers?
Herman's Hermits was a good-looking and great-sounding band with a huge catalog of hits and other, wonderful material.
This video really brings one back to the Swinging Sixties, and the Hermits' premature demise as a cohesive unit was unfortunate, as we were all denied several years of their continued, great live and studio performances!

Interesting that he'd say that, given that Herman's Hermits' recordings were almost all session musicians.
