this got to be the worst transit in San Fransisco because they ran stop sighs, they've crashed into another train in the subway, and whats going on with these train?

Wow here in Vancouver the skytrain iis fully automated and has never led to accidents. We have a special system with this electronics box it sends a signal to a skytrain to let on know there's another train in the station so the oncoming skytrain slowly stops and waits.

It's different when you have trains running on regular streets. That's when it's all manual and the driver decides everything.

did you heard what happened in Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort? the two monorail on the Epcot Track crashed into each other and a driver of the train got killed by an oncomming monorail head on.

technically speaking, they are modern streetcars. The fact that it is a Light Rail, it can be confused as both trains and streetcars. But i prefer to refer them as streetcars as they do have a lot of street-running sections just like a typical tram/streetcar.

Thats the stupidest thing I ever heard...having to keep a train in automatic mode to prevent a crash. In NYC most trains are manually operated and there is still a system in place to stop the train if it gets too close to another train.

the San Francisco Muni light rail trains are equipped with a computer system that has to be on automatic mode until the train arrives in the station platform. there are light rail signals. it is usually operator error that cause light rail train to collide with another light rail train. if the operator did not switch off the automatic mode, the train would had stopped safely automatically.

oh. auto mode for the San Francisco MUNI light rail trains is only when using the tunnels. however, there should had been a way for the computer system to safely stop the train that passed a red light signal or to safely stop the train that could had avoided the train to crash into another train.

yes. i agree. they could use the same GPS system they use to tell you when the next train is coming. GPS can have a positioning accuracy of 1-5 m (greater than 20 m in some situations) but the relative speed of the 2 muni trains could be monitored at least...

they need to design those trains like they do cars, the inside of cars have smooth edges and padded so that in the even or a crash your less likely to be hurt, plus all the seats should have high backs so that people dont get whip lash or worse. Check our the passangers in the other video that are sitting down, major movement of the neck and head...really bad!

That usually happens when the train briefly loses power, especially in the subway.

That might validate the drivers point that the brakes didn't work. However, if he was going too fast, as Muni claims, the loss of power may not have been an issue. Let's see what the final report says.

If he didn't try to brake until after the lights went out and the power was lost then he was screwwed anyway... Most likely the power going out was caused by the extreme power draw of the emergency braking system of the LRV (Emergency braking actually draws more power then the catenary can provide, and thus power is drawn off the car's batteries as well during E-braking... that's a lot of juice!)
